This is an interesting thread as it is all about revealed preference rather than all the other motivations and justifications that go in to buying/collecting/wearing fragrance.

I worked out fairly quickly that it was far better to find the fragrances I wanted using a situation like this i.e. what you actually enjoy wearing on a regular basis, rather than some of the other ways that were suggested to me.

In the situation you describe, I would almost certainly go for Layton.

Hot dog! I "dumb reached" for Layton over this weekend. I've had my bottle for maybe 6 months, worn it a dozen times. Now I know it's a topic that's up much debate, but whether changes happen within the bottle or my personal perception... or both... it's more enjoyable and easy wear than I had remembered. Rough edges were smoothed out and quite enjoyed the green'ish sweet endless dry-down.

Hoping the same magic happens with my bottle of Kalan - the scratchy powerful black pepper top overpowered the woody :sneaky: base.

You're running late to a lunch date with friends. Or maybe traffic was heavy on the way home and you have an evening date or meeting to chase off to. Quick rinse off, get dressed.... with little time to overthink what fragrance to wear.... you just reach for your good ole favorite perfume. What is it?

Dior Homme EDT (original)
Kouros or Aramis or Azzaro Pour Homme or Quorum or Grey Flannel or Bogart Signature or Bogart One Man Show. If it's extremely hot I might reach for L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme, Azzaro Chrome Legend, Rassasi Egra, Drakkar Noir.

If I'd have to make it only with one perfume, it would be Kouros.

For me a dumb reach is about versatility and not making a statement. Sometimes I want to say specific things with fragrance, so I pick a specific one. But if I...
-Don't have time to think about it
-Am doing various things in the next few hours
-Just want to smell pleasant without making a statement
I reach for the dumb reach.

For me a dumb reach is about versatility and not making a statement.

That, and certainty. Dumb reaches reinforce themselves though regular use, whereas something arguably “better” might not inspire the same degree of confidence.

Ergo, my “dumb reaches” are Terre d’Hermès and Clive Christian 1872 because I wore them both often pre-BN. I could wear any number of other things just as easily now, and I might prefer them, but those two I don’t have to think about.

"Dumb reach" is an odd term! I don't have "one to rule them all."

Of the stuff in my wardrobe that might qualify:
  • Acqua di Parma Colonia
  • Bottega Veneta pour Homme
  • Caron pour Un Homme Sport
  • Creed Royal Oud
  • Guerlain L'Instant pour Homme EDT
  • Guerlain Vetiver Extrême
  • Xerjoff Kobe
The three I wear most are ADP Colonia, Caron PUH Sport, and Xerjoff Kobe.

I would wear Royal Oud more often (it's so versatile) but I have some personal hangup about wearing such a "luxury" item as a Creed fragrance as a dumb reach.

A year ago, it would have been Chanel Egoïste, no questions asked.

But now...

DON'T DO THIS TO ME!!!!!! *breaks down in sobs*

Club De Nuit Intense Men. Love the dry down and don't mind the opening.

MFK Masculin Plureil

It regularly gets enthusiastic compliments from both men and women, which honestly was unexpected... it seems like a pretty ordinary fougere, albeit modern and very well blended.

Mine is Acqua Di Iris by Ermenegildo Zegna. It is similar to Dior Homme Eau but with a beautiful creamy sandalwood that wears like a clean smooth second skin.
Hit the nail on the head, second skin is right on! Wore it last week proper in the wild so to speak and it's great.

I'm thinking Prada L'homme EAU /splash is along the same lines, more available and those big bottles 🙂. The Zegna is a bit precious for me now, scarcity and that.

So these days, when hard pressed, I actually tend to reach for Herod.

Mind you, I find the whole Parfums de Marly "famous stallions in history" thing rather pretentious and eye-roll worthy, and I would never pay full price for any of their insufferably supercilious concoctions.*

But Herod happens to be a pretty serviceable fragrance. It's office safe, conservative and even a little boring, gives you a nice scent bubble that will take you through the day and even the morning after, and I truly like the nice "smoking room" mixture of notes (tobacco, cedar, musk, spices) that wafts from my clothes or wrists at random moments during the day.

*Mind you, that's not saying much. I rarely pay full price for ANYTHING. I'm cheap --and proud!

Summer - Allure Homme Sport/Aqua. Inoffensive and smells great on my skin in particular.
Fall - Dior Homme Intense. I have a old 2015 and its actually nice, I need to try the new Homme but idk.
Winter - Givenchy Gentleman's Reserve Privee. My favorite scent I have.
Spring - This one can really be anything I am feeling. I usually just reach in and pick a random frag.

I use the Oil Perfumery version of Herod. Smells quite close, really nice, and is not a fortune for a frag that really shouldn't be more than 150 ngl.
