Agree with grayspoole on the description of tomato leaves. Sharply vegetal. I suspect you've smelled it already many times but perhaps don't yet associate it with the plant. The perfume that introduced the note in perfumery is probably Sisley Eau de campagne.

Thank you 🙂

I’m 100% expecting to go, “Ahhh, okay!” with recognition when I get my tomatoes.

Strange how I never paid enough attention to their scent!

The most fav genre of mine. I could talk for days. I could list so many, but let me just name a few.

Vintage Polo Green
Vintage Paco Rabbane PH
Paul Smith London for Men
Essencia Loewe
Eternity for Men
Creed Original Vetiver / Mugler Cologne
Vince Camuto PH
PDM Greenley (very very intensely green)
PDM Haltane
Dior Home 2020 (not overtly green, but the vetiver adds a touch of greeness)
Hermes Un Jardin en Mediteranee
Chanel Pour Monsieur EDT / No. 19 / Sycomore / Egoiste Platinum
Bond No. 9 Riverside Drive, Bleeker Street, Central Park, Great Jones
So many more....

What an amazing list, thank you!

I’m looking forward to reading up on the ones I’m unfamiliar with.

Bowling Green smelled like a garden in the spring to me. Unfortunately it is discontinued. I think Basile Uomo will replace Bowling Green for me. While not smelling the same, I get the same vibe, it is a fresh, fine blended, easy to wear green scent. If Bowling Green made me think of english gardens, Basile Uomo make me think of gardens of Tuscany.

Grey Flannel, Yatagan, One Man Show, Eloge du Traitre, Quorum, Tsar, Jaguar For Men, Versace L'Homme, La Yuqawam Ambergris Showers, 1881 Men, Insense Ultramarine, Egra Men, are some nice green perfumes.

Probably the most green smelling, with the greatest longevity I smelled is Ajmal Verde. It's like taking some random leaves from trees, squishing them in your palms and amplifying that 10 times. I only wear it one time, but I'll definitely wear it more in spring and summer.

Now I've realized that I own tones of various kinds of perfumes, but too few green ones. And I should get some more.

Green fragrances are my first love!!! I have a lot of ideas for you:

Green Spell by Eris has my favorite tomato leaf accord
Paradisi by Jorum Studios is a raucous vegetable garden in a bottle
Eau de Lierre by Dipyque was my first green love, a classy ivy scent
Corsica Furiosa for an unforgettable mastic note
Coriander by DS & Durga is a soapy and fizzy green, well, coriander seed!
Voyeur Verde by Maya Njie - this is a really intriguing green leather fragrance, inspired by overgrown vegetation covering an old car. Plus it's currently Black Owned Fragrance Week (in honor of Black History Month) and this is my favorite independent Black perfumer! Check all her stuff out!
Tulsivivah! by Miller et Bertaux is the best Tulsi basil scent I've ever found
Nuit de Bakelite by Naomi Goodsir is a completely unparalleled and utterly green take on tuberose, almost icy
Grass by Lush is the best rendition of grass I've found to remind me of the old Gap Grass scent that is so hard to find now
Fugit Amour by Jul et Mad has the cool green spicy sophistication of a marble statue

Happy sniffing!!

I do have Eau Noire, which I enjoy very much.
Does it register as "green" to you?

The other bottles sound lovely
Saint-Germain-des-Prés has a bit of a "little naughty, little nice" kind of coquettish vibe, while still being French, chic, and classy:

Hmmm … well, I smell “green” within it, but I don’t perceive it as a green fragrance (even though the liquid quite literally is) per se. More herbal than vegetal, to me - but what do I know?

This photo perfectly personifies the description of “coquettish, French, chic and classy”. I’ll have to look into that scent, thank you!

I still don't know what people mean by "green" fragrances! Green could be all sorts of things, vetivers, citrus aromatics, fougeres, chypres. Apart from galbanum, what other notes are common in them?

I'm surprised by this question, a 'green' fragrance is something I understand innately. Some things just smell green. Like @_Nicolsaidas_ said, it's about plantiness for me. There are many different shades of green to my nose:

  • Tender spring green - Pale, yellowish green, like linden leaves. Things that smell like the first breath of spring, like Heeley's L'Amandiere, Ormonde Jayne's Tiare, and L'Artisan's La Chasse aux Papillons
  • Soft powdery green - Pastel warm or cool green. Things with delicate iris mainly Chanel no. 19 Poudree, Prada's Infusion d'Iris, Maison Violet Nuee Bleue (the name notwithstanding, this one is a bit more yellow green)
  • Bright yellow green - Green + citrus, like Dior's Diorella
  • Bright full on green - Mid toned, yellowish green in full intensity. Things that smell like crushing up some fresh green leaves, like Sisley's Eau de Campagne, and the dryer Dusita's Le Sillage Blanc
  • Crisp soapy green - Bright, yellow leaning green with some white. Galbanum + iris + aldehydes, like Chanel No. 19, Chanel Cristalle
  • Floral soapy green - Mid toned green with some white. Lots of 70s florals that may or may not have a chypre base, but focus on a full bouquet of flowers. My favourite in this genre is Bruno Acampora's Prima T. Guerlain's Chamade is a less soapy more ambery/spicy take on this genre.
  • Leathery green chypres - Darker, murky green with some golden/brown hues, think flower vase water after 7 days or so. Again abundant in 70s style perfumery, Estee Lauder's Azuree is one of them, as is vintage Miss Dior, and, to my nose, Mitsouko (although that one is more brown than green to my nose)
  • Floral green - Mid toned green + bright colors. Sans soap or leather this time, things like Diptyque's L'Ombre dans L'Eau (rose + foliage), Hiram Green's Dilettante (orange blossom + foliage)
  • Mossy forest green - Desaturated, blueish/grey darker green - Things that smell like moss and dried leaves, like Papillon's Dryad
  • Pine green - dark green, muted, bluish or blackened - I'm not a fan of the piney cleaner smell, but Ormonde Jayne's Ormonde Woman is a great one in this category, as is Corsica Furiosa (more tree resin than pine, really)
  • Dark greyish green - This can go either in the dried herb direction, or in the dry woody vetiver direction, like Chanel's Sycomore EdT. At any rate, this color smells dry

Thank you so much - this is an amazing post to learn from. I really appreciate it.

I’m going to start making purchases tomorrow evening, and start my green journey.

I'm curious how you would categorize Eau de Gentiane Blanche, if you have smelled that one before.

I don't know this one, but reading about it makes me want to! I'll see if I can test it in store, if so, I will report back with a colour.

And @kosui no kaori please do keep us updated on your green smelling spree. You have an amazing and long list of things to test now!

There are a handful that were mentioned in this thread that I have (No.19, Sycomore, Eau Noire, Philosykos, Diorella and Bandit are the first ones to come to mind), which I’ll be revisiting with a more attentive nose while I wait for packages to arrive.

Tonight I’ll begin purchasing the rest 🌿

Round One - Fight!

I’m predicting three “rounds” of purchases, which I’ll space out accordingly so as not to overwhelm myself - when I get overwhelmed, everything gets pushed to the back of the fragrance wardrobe, and I will avoid it for far too long.

To begin:

- Chanel No. 19 Extrait.
- Chanel Cristalle.
- Nishane Wulong Cha.
- Frederic Malle Synthetic Jungle.
- Sisley Eau de Campagne.
- Diptyque L’Ombre Dans L’eau.

Thank you to everyone who shared their incredible knowledge in this thread … I look forward to this little adventure!

Creed has several superb greens:

Selection Verte — spearmint green

Feuilles Vertes — super high quality green leaves, with stunning, deep floral highlights

Green Valley — sunny afternoon on hillside overlooking a green valley, with notes of fresh mown hay and wildflowers

Green Irish Tweed — needs no introduction here

Jacques Bogart Story Green, and JacquesBogart One Man Show Emerald Edition — good green fun, well-priced.

Maybe my favourites are not totally green fragrance. But I like this scents

Hermes Un Jardin Sur La Nil : This is a different interpretation about garden atmosphere. Little bit a green, little bit a juicy citrus bomb. And aromatic scents for my nose.

Lalique Encre Noire Sport : Yes this is fresher version of the original. But not a sport generally. This scent is like a diluted version of the intense vetiver scent. And I sometimes liken this smell to mastic gum and sometimes to the smell of oranges.

Lalique L’Insoumis : This is a amazing basil scent. I feel coconut vibe sometimes. Fresh and attractive green gentleman fragrance for my nose.

I got my nose on this unexpectedly in a big department store. Granted, the sprayer was wonky so I could only get some on a tester strip, but it was gorgeous! A delicate, botanical flower, more purple and yellow than green to my nose, somewhat powdery but very naturalistic at the same time. A touch of bitterness, a touch of sweetness, perfect for spring, I'm feeling it! I have ordered a sample right away to test it on skin properly. Thanks for the suggestion!

It is always a pleasure to share hidden gems with people who I think will have the same affinities to them as I do!
