What Lanvin Version is This?

Apr 14, 2019
Here is a bottle that has been stuck in a dusty corner of the cabinet where my collection lives. I've had it for at least 20 years and have no idea how I came by it. Thrift store? I can't remember. I forgot it because when I first opened it I got a blast of pure alcohol and thought it was done for. I rediscovered it and it is NOT done for. It's rather potent, if short-lived. I looked on Raider of the Lost Scent before bothering Basenoters, but can't really identify the scent. Does anyone know if it is associated with one of the better known fragrances, or is simply Lanvin "Eau de Cologne"? I don't know much about Arpège for comparison and this doesn't pop up as a standalone fragrance.

It kicks off with a blast of orange blossom peach, balanced with somewhat bitter lemon rind, then gets herbier and dries down to a pleasant powder with a hint of bergamot/verbena. Anyone? Thanks!

Have you seen this basenoter’s review?

Your bottle style looks like another Lanvin fragrance called “Cardamome de Lanvin” which came out in 1979

Perfume Intelligence and Grace Hummel list a Lanvin Eau de Cologne from 1934. (In fact, Perfume Intelligence also has a Lanvin Eau de Cologne from 1920). Hummel describes it as a “spicy citrus cologne,” which aligns with your description. I don’t think your bottle is as old as that, however. The label and style of printing are similar to other Lanvin cologne bottles from the 1970’s.

Like Grayspool, I believe it's a standalone called simply Eau de Cologne ( as opposed to the Eaux Aperges, My Sins etc that with all labeled that way to confuse ! ). Comparing it to the ones I have from that period, it would indeed appear to be 70's.

I have an Eau de Lanvin from that period too https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/19471095...zdivp_eRMu&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY. That one IS mentioned in Basenotes and is also a standalone, reissued in the 70's. It's more of a"straightforward" citrus based cologne.

Thanks! I thought I had expended some effort in my search, but no... I was going to get rid of it and wanted to know what it definitively was. It smells very nice, though, like a cross between a classic cologne and a parfum.

I did see the Basenotes review; that may have made me more confused.

Unsurprisingly so, because that review pitched you into the dark, murky waters of the debate over the various “Eaux” issued by the House of Lanvin. We began discussing this during one of our vintage sample syncs and, lo!, there is a thread:

The Vintage Eaux de Lanvin

Make yourself a cup of tea.

I think your bottle is a standalone Eau de Cologne,.
