What kind of software might be useful for perfume enthusiasts?

As a software engineer, I always think about how software might be useful in various hobbies I have. But when it comes to perfumery, as an user, I only think of two, mostly in perfume discovery segment:

A suggestion software based on AI with large training sets of perfume recipes, where you input your preferences, select a style, genre or perfume and the software makes a few suggestions which might fit your tastes.

A drill down software based on large data sets of human input, where you can select a style of perfume, a minimum and maximum price, the desired longevity, projection and sillage and it spits out some variants. This I kind of do by hand now, using Fragrantica and Google, so it would be nice to have it automated.

Do you think of any use where a software might be useful for perfume enthusiasts?

I quite like Twisted Lily's discovery tool.

hi,

A suggestion software would be interesting but I see two big problems there: nuance and subjective perception of scent.

If you compare the list you get when you input let's say 4 ingredients of a specific perfume in fragrantica's "search by notes" function and the list people give in the "this perfume reminds me of" section, there won't be many overlaps.

Lots of perfumes have vanilla, for example, but not all have it as a dominant note. In some fragrances, it's so discreet that most people don't even notice it. And then not all vanillas are created equal. Some are dry and smoky, others are sweet and creamy, gourmand, non-gourmand, etc.

Then there's the issue of a general feel or impression. A lot of people are looking for scents that convey a certain mood or atmosphere, and that is so subjective. Maybe this perfume achieves a certain vibe by using leather and violet notes, and another will create a similar feeling with tobacco, patchouli and iris...

Start with a nice Excel spreadsheet listing details of your collection. If you have a large collection, it’s handy to see it summarized in one document. Include columns for perfumers, fragrance notes, financial info, etc. Documentation of collectibles is a big help if you’re evaluating homeowners insurance.
I like this idea.

I'll take a different route. I'd like a Xenforo plugin/extension that would take a Basenote user's SOTD entries and do the following:
  • Add them into a/the online calendar. Is there a Xenforo calendar? a plugin/extension for one? If not, perhaps add them to Outlook/Google and/or export them in .ics format (for importing into other online calendars).
  • Link each fragrance to its Directory page. Self-explanatory.
  • Provide an export facility, with options for output-file format. HTML, CSV (comma-separated values), tabbed.
I think this would be a practical and doable piece of software.

Good idea and useful. I wanted to do it since a while ago, I just need to find the time.

Nice, tool. Thanks for sharing. I hope I will discover some interesting things with it.

Perfume Master has a tool to search for similar perfumes: https://www.perfumemaster.com/ferrari/red-power-mens-cologne/similar-scents

That's why I thought of using AI algorithms trained on a large list of recipes with actual ingredients. That would take into consideration the amount of ingredients in perfumes and combinations of ingredients.

Tending to second the aforementioned Excel recommendations.
Since their listing/rating/categorizing functions does have here on BN a track record that might not be the most commonly used, yet also no rarity especially when keeping track of larger scent collections.
