Primarily, with the base materials used in the perfume. Things like amber, certain woods, leather, vanilla, patchouli, and the like tend to last a long time. Temperature and humidity (of the environment and hence the skin) play a role too. And clothes and leather keep perfume for longer than the skin.

Concurring with Malle and Piguet as being long lasting, as well as Amouage and Etat Libre d'Orange. At the opposite end, Jo Malone (but Jo Malone are built to be that way).
