I recall Brut as harsh and mean, and I've been surprised by its renaissance here on Basenotes. Maybe I too should give it another try sometime.

It’s distinctive, but I’m not terribly fond of it.

Over sprayers in Brut's heyday may have helped form that opinion!

I find that vintage Brut works wonders with just one spray.... And I like a good 5-6 sprays of Warner or Cosmair Polo....

A watery mint-citrus smoky tonka and pine fougère that feels like you're on the boat it was named after.

Underrated.

It would be futile of me to try and describe this when others have done a far better job already. Read the wonderful review by @Varanis Ridari who delves into some of the history if you're interested. For those who don't like reading long reviews @Colbourne sums it up perfectly with '...sort of a citrus cologne with a dash of fougere in the drydown'.

There's something quite lovely about simplicity. Perfect for a warm spring day.

Starting Saturday morning off with Virgin Island Water. Blue cap. The blue cap version wears a little more densely and like a true Eau de Parfum. The chrome cap/blue dot version wears slightly more like and EDT with a bit more musk present but not as much as newer versions. Both versions mentioned have great longevity. If I’m going to be outdoors, the difference is slight but I think I would reach for the 4oz chrome/blue dot cap the hotter the temps. This morning, while watering and feeding my flowers, the older blue cap version is perfect.

Even though it's easy to make fun of Ralph Lauren's advertising campaigns, I have to admit to a grudging admiration for the way he always committed so totally to the aspirational fantasy worlds he created, whether American preppy or imperialist globetrotter. And now he's doing it again with a pivot to our current aspiration toward diversity and multiculturalism. There's a very good HBO documentary about his career called "Very Ralph" that's a worthwhile watch.

MCM 24 Evening by MCM (1993)
(Delightfully animalic fougere with cumin, civet and cinnamon.
It's spicy, it's resinous...it's complex. Longevity is the Achilles Heel here.
All told though it's a real sleeper that I think people would love if they tried it. Well, people like "us" and not the average person who isn't fanatical about fragrance. )

That's what I found between the two style bottles. They smelled similar but the blue caps were dialed up a notch.
