I'm sorry guys. Let me double check. Now that I've had coffee, I'm sure I'm mixing this up with Habit Rouge. The dangers of posting before fully awake!

Nevertheless, I do remember reading or hearing that Heritage was Guerlain's male answer to Shalimar. So it warrants further investigation by nose. Sorry for any previous confusion.
No worries Diddy. I’m a coffee drinker so I get it. I thought it was Habit Rouge that was supposed to be the male answer to Shalimar?

I’m very picky with powder. As picky as a 5 year old that only wants to eat chicky nuggies at every meal. In certain instances, I love it. In others, it’s simply not my thing. In rare cases, it’s repulsive. I literally have Dana and Shalimar Eau de Cologne sitting on my counter because I wanted to do a side by side. Shalimar is a new experience for me really. I know I’ve possibly smelled somewhere in the wild but I didn’t grow up with any female family members rocking it, and therefore don’t have it mentally indexed ‘pour femme’. My wife recently snagged a well kept bottle from an estate sale and, while I haven’t worn it, I sprayed some on a tissue and it was such a smooth vanilla fragrance and had the powder dialed back that I want to give it a try for myself. I was originally going to gift this to a BN member, and still may, but I want to give it a proper wearing in the near future first. As I type this out I’m realizing the better comparison would probably be against Heritage EDC (which is more approachable to me than the edt). Doesn’t the story go - Guerlain created Heritage because men kept going for Shalimar? Or something to that effect? I’m just scratching the Shalimar surface but, if the story is true, I see why! It’s too early to confirm but I may actually prefer Shalimar to Heritage.

Going to be a wet and chilly day in south Louisiana. I haven’t selected my SOTD but will update later.
I'm with you. You may also give Habit Rouge a try. To me the EDT was more rose and powder and the EDC was more citrusy.

I found the powder in Habit Rouge preferable to Canoe, and I prefer the powder in Shalimar over both. That vanilla with the powder is so nice and I hope you find it too.

I do tend to like powders but as a part of a whole (esp. with vanilla) rather than the main show.

FYI... if I hadn't known the marketing, I would have sworn Heritage EDT was marketed towards women.

I hope you have a lovely time trying these out and please let us know what you think :D

Thank you for your kind response! I can tell you that with Habit Rouge I've tried it in some modern version and then the vintage eau de cologne, and the eau de cologne was more preferable to me as the powder was less intense. I suppose that, in general, I've preferred my powders more tempered as in a fragrance such as HdP 1725. Clean or subdued or barber powders have seemed to get along with my senses. Something searing like Paul Sebastion PS etc can be a bit overwhelming to my senses. It's just a preference/stylistic thing really, as I'm first and foremost a lover of citrus and clean and green and mossy concoctions. Whenever I sniffed Shalimar EDC on paper, there was nothing searing or that made me throw my head back. Instead, I was presented with a lovely vanilla accord that had a touch of powder in the background. It intrigued me, as I was fully expecting to be assaulted by something similar to the experience when my grandmother would overspray fragrance to a choking degree in her later years but was actually met but a lovely approachable vanilla. That's when I decided to hold up on gifting the bottle, just yet, and instead giving it a proper wear first. Could Shalimar EDC be the thing that sends Canoe, Wild Country, Old Spice, Tabac Original, Habit Rouge, etc packing??? IDK. I'm a bit scared that I've opened up the door to a fragrance room I wasn't even interested in peaking into!

Would you mind telling us more about this one - and why you like it? It's been something I'm interested in so hoping to get your impression.

Notes are: Aldehydes, Neroli, Clary Sage, Bergamot, Lemon, Jasmine, Orris Root, Narcissus, Ylang-Ylang, Rose, Clove, Lilac, Lily-of-the-Valley, Civet, Musk, Styrax, Woods, Tolu Balsam, Vetyver and Vanille. What impresses me most is the sheer quality of the ingredients along with the seamless blending. Even the top notes seem remarkably well preserved in my bottle. I always thought the vintage Lanvins were a paragon of perfumery and this is up there with the very best. A rich, deep and complex aldehydic floral with a musky woody civet base. The animalic facets purr rather than roar and are never offensive to this untrained nose. The closest comparison I can think of is vintage Chanel No 5 Eau De Cologne. Just did a quick side by side and there are definitely similarities. I think you will love it :)

Alain Delon Plus/AD Plus By Alain Delon (1987)
(Yummy fougere that lasts all day with good projection. Opens with bergamot and lavender along with rosemary and aldehydes. In the heart carnation and geranium are joined by cinnamon, cypress, honey, fir and rose. There's a mild leather in the base along with oakmoss, labdanum, cedar and musk. I enjoy Delon's movies quite a bit with a few like Death of a Corrupt Man, Le Cercle Rouge, Le Samourai, Un Flic, Three Men to Kill, No Way Out and Flic Story being absolutely essential. There are others that are also quite worthwhile. So I like the man's movies and feel the same about his fragrances. The guy has good taste!)

Thank you so much - it really sounds quite lovely.

All the vintage Lanvin feminines (and masculines, for that matter) are at least worth trying. My favorite of the feminines is Scandal, but, as @JON RODGERS so eloquently describes, My Sin is also wonderful—even if Arpège hogs most of the glory.

If you haven't yet, you should now try to get your hands on a sample of Shalimar extrait!

Have a terribly dangerous storm front sweeping the southern part of The States right now. I showered up and wearing one of my comfort scents…. Safari by Ralph Lauren (Cosmair). @Cook.bot , you’re ole stomping ground is getting a serious rinse and blow dry tonight!
I hear that's the storm moving north and giving us snow tomorrow. ❄️ I already have a just delivered vintage in mind.

Exactly what I'm worried about! :ROFLMAO:

Shalimar extrait, at least in the vintage I tried, is almost an entirely different fragrance from the EdC. The latter, I frankly couldn’t bear, perhaps for the same reasons I couldn’t abide Habit Rouge EdC. The extrait, however, contained a snarling leather beast, which I might be tempted to ride again.

You see? That’s exactly the type of comment that gets me interested. I still haven’t worn Shalimar EDC. Even though Avon’s Wild Country got my whole journey going, I don’t reach for powdery things much. If I’m interested in reaching for something powdery, I’m thinking I’d have to consider Shalimar EDC as an option since the vanilla is more forward and the powder is pulled back. But here you are saying ‘snarling leather beast’, and I’m listening. I’m also thinking… maybe I should just get Shalimar off my radar because with all of the versions available it seems a rabbit whole I need to be careful with… and, a distraction from other goodies I’m still pursuing. Snarling leather beast. Reading that reminds me of a very fun and nearly regrettable night in the French Quarters 🤣😂

Hello everyone. Cacharel Anaïs Anaïs today.

Back in the 1980s when I regularly wore this, it struck me as merely an innocently feminine perfume. I didn’t pick up on its complexity. Most obvious was the cool, soapy floralcy but I missed its truly good leathery incense note. Wearing it these many years later, it reads as perfectly wearable by any gender.

Hello everyone. Cacharel Anaïs Anaïs today.
Lovely! Beautiful fragrance.

When I was a wee nipper, knee high to a grasshopper, my family had an au pair from France who used to wear this. Suffice to say as a young lad I was somewhat in awe of the elegant French girl who used to wear this beautiful fragrance. What torment I went through!
