In the past I briefly tried layering a time or two with a couple of Etro fragrances - Ambra with Sandalo, or Ambra with Patchouly. It was okay but I always ended up wanting to smell of the one scent only, and not a blend.

Today I’m ‘layering’ Shalimar in eau de cologne, body powder, and dabs of vintage extrait.

As the day dawned a traditional feeling overtook the spirit of adventure and I opted for five versions of Chanel N°5. Pure nostalgia for the days when just about every perfume had the whole gamut of products, and creating a delicious aura. In order of application:

Bath Soap
Body Cream
Eau de toilette
Eau de parfum
and for the crowning touch…
Parfum

Since I'll be at home today, I decided to experiment.

I took Serge Lutens Un Fille de Berlin with Guerlain's Herba Fresca. I was thinking -maybe I will get a greenhouse or late spring yard effect. But alas (because I'm going for that level of melodramatic), I was thwarted by the mint

I tried one spray of each, but the mint was not playing well with the rose, so a second spritz of the Un Fille de Berlin.

I can wear this today and it is fine, but there are many reasons I'm not a perfumer and this is a definite example. There'll probably be another spritz of the Un Fille de Berlin later. It's a lovely rose and I can't go wrong if I leave it alone.

No matter the result, I've had such a lovely time experimenting that I am sure I will try something else at a later date

Update: (little one, 4, said I was like a recycling truck and said "icky". Should I be thrilled that I could predict the reaction or offended because I was compared to a recycling truck?) I've gone with proud.

I'm syncing with Infusion d'Iris and Apres L'Ondee. They are actually quite lovely together. They are anchored by a common iris note, but Apres L'Ondee's soft florals are boosted by the citrus and white musk of Infusion, whilst the heliotrope and violet in ALO softens and rounds out Infusion. I love this pairing, and might even revisit it in the future.

I decided to join the synch in a combination of Cuir Mauresque and Mandarine mandarin. See the sotd for my thoughts

The notes in CM : Mandarin peel, orange blossom, nutmeg, cumin, clove, Jasmine, amber, myrrh, styrax, incence, cinnamon, oud, cedarwood, civet and musk.

MM: Orange, rosehip, nutmeg, candied mandarin, orange peel, lapsang souchong, labdanum, tonkabean and ambergris.

They share some citrusy notes and nutmeg. I feel they blend quite nicely together

On my left wrist I have now sprayed both Opus 1144 and Shalimar edp, on my right only Shalimar edp.

The mix on my left, after an hour, has settled and is gorgeous. The elemi from Opus 1144 is too dominant for Shalimar, so it feels like a beautifully amped up Opus, if nearly without any leather. It is the reformulated version of Opus and I never got much of the leather note, and I am sorry to say Shalimar's leather has disappeared in the mix. At the beginning I could still smell the leather from Shalimar on my right wrist.
By now, about two hours after applying, I can only faintly smell Shalimar if I try really hard, the layering on my left has taken power over my nose.

Tonight I will spray Khol de Bahrein on both my wrists for a final layering.

Again planning to fly blind with a SOTD into SOTE combination. I (boldly) started the day with a blast of Eau d'Hermes - sparkling citrus, cumin, cinnamon, jasmine, civet, and a whiff of leather.

Not sure what I'll pick for phase 2... maybe Cartier Declaration Essence, since the citrus, cumin, and leather are a clear nod to EdH anyway. Or I could go weirder with something like Lutens' Feminite du Bois, which I've always thought of as another in a long line of spiritual successors (albeit far less direct than Declaration); the cumin in FdB being a quiet accent to the plum and cedar that otherwise dominate. We'll see where the day takes us!

Chanel Egoiste EDT and Egoiste Cologne Concentree is something I decided to give a go. While the EDT adds a bit more sweetness and vanilla, the Cologne concentree adds more spice and sandalwood. Not bad I must say.

I'm using my Mitsouko arsenal for today's sync. I took a shower with the heavenly soap and then layered with the powder, followed by the eau de toilette. Tonight I'm going to apply half a drop of my pure vintage perfume.

You just gave me an idea, since my bottle of Opus 1144 arrived today. I'll try it with Shalimar edp. This would be an evening combination for me, at least in the bright, warm sunny early summer weather we are having now.

Although I did not sync today I got a couple of ideas (besides the one from fanny) so I might try a couple of post-syncs this weekend:
- Chanel No. 5 shower gel and lotion followed by Chanel La Pausa.
- someone somewhere wrote about wearing Chanel No.5 and Samsara EDP together... it might just work. I think No. 5 EDP or Parfum rather than EDT though, with modern Samsara.

I know you and I have both bitched about this ad nauseam, FiveO, but I just can't get over that perfume companies stopped making all the adjacent grooming products. I assume it has to be for financial reasons, because what other factor ever motivates their behavior, but it's so hard to believe that it wouldn't be cheaper to produce a scented lotion or soap than it would a bottle of perfume. It's got to be at least as cheap as producing makeup, and all the perfume companies are doing that these days.

Going the 'following-on' route, since I've been out all day.
SOTD : Guerlain Vetiver
SOTE : Etro Palais Jamais
The Guerlain and Etro bases do not complement each other.

I have successfully gone this route with Etro Palais Jamais for daytime and Etro Vetiver for evening. Etro Shaal Nur also works for evening, since it has vetiver in the base.
At the same time, I get what @tdem1961 means about not layering Etros. They're not soliflores, whatever the names might suggest.

I sprayed Khol de Bahrein on both wrists right after another dose of the previous layers. It's been quite a cacaphony, as was to be expected, especially on my left wrist, which is now slowly turning into an odd sort of dense wood & plastic. On my right wrist (Shalimar + Khol d.B) something very nice is developing.

This was fun, g'night all!

I'm with you - I used to buy lotion with perfume and layer them. It made fragrance extra special to me.

An update on my layering experiment.
It wasn't at all bad but definitely think that layering AA Orange Soleia over de Johanne might be better. The mint was quite strong for a couple of hours with the citrus steadily working its way through until I have a skin scent of a nice balanced mixture. One thing I will say for it, is that it made it last for 12 hours, which I wouldn't get otherwise.

I regularly wear two perfumes at once, one on the back of each hand, but I don’t consider that layering. The only combo where I’d regularly put one on top of the other was right when Fahrenheit Parfum came out, I’d spray the original Fahrenheit underneath to cut the sweetness and give it extra oomph.

For an actual layer today, I grabbed a bottle and a sample (respectively) that were easily accessible and went for it. It worked out nicely - vintage 80’s Antaeus on top of Amouage Opus X. Bombastic, super perfumey rose mixed with the classic Chanel.

I liked seeing the combos of different product/same scent. I do have Bruno Acampora Sballo in both spray Extrait and body creme, which is a lovely, long-lasting combo. Maybe I’ll do that post-shower tomorrow.

I went with Declaration Essence after all. Eau d'Hermes is very faint this late in the day (probably not really noticeable unless I dig my nose into skin), but I get the sense there's a bit of lingering spice and sweetness. Declaration Essence is further from Eau d'Hermes than the original Declaration EDT, I think, but it's still a clear descendent - and in close contention for my single favorite perfume, weirdly. Every time I wear this, I love it from start to finish. Blended with the faintest wisp of Eau d'Hermes... I don't know if it improves upon either scent, but it's not bad at all!

The house of Jo Malone actively promotes layering, so what would be a better choice than Wood Sage & Sea Salt layered with Peony & Blush Suede? I ventured into the Jo Malone store earlier this week and they gave me these two minis with my purchase. They smelled pretty good - different from my usual fare.

I'm not a habitual layerer, but recently I found that layering can be very effective when I have something in mind, but nothing matches exactly in my collection or sample stash. I've had especially good experiences when layering perfumes I already like with the intent of giving them a twist (e.g. make them sweeter, more powdery, more vintage-smelling). It's also a good way to use up samples I'm not very excited about.
That said, yesterday I must not have been very inspired because I just picked two samples I wanted to use up without much thought about what I was trying to achieve, and the result was truly awful
Maybe pairing either of them with something I like better would have been a wiser choice...

I decided to get polyamorous with Chanel Gabrielle (which could use a bit of tobacco) and Miller-Harris Feuilles de Tabac (which could use some floral freshness). The result is not unpleasant, and is growing on me!

Chanel No.5 around my chest and neck with Samsara on my arms. I did not dare spray them one over the other.
What can I say... eh. They don't clash horribly, the creamy tropical feel of Samsara (modern) is enhanced somehow and No.5 seems to bring the less sweet woody notes. But I have to admit I'd rather wear each of these on their own and enjoy them as they are.

I liked the approach some took above where they let one perfume fade and then applied another on on top. Makes more sense to me than layering upfront.

So, I had an inspiration today: I wore Dusita Fleur de Lalita during the day (how come I overlooked it? It's lovely! The galbanum makes it interesting...) and later as it is almost gone but still kind of there, instead of applying more I dabbed some vintage Chanel No. 19 parfum. I figured, galbanum, rose... it should go well. And I quite like this progression.

(...and, fortuitously, discovered that my tiny little parfum bottle is all right. I had bought another one, a 15ml, that had turned a bit, sadly - but this one is gorgeous! But only 7ml. Man, I need more...! )

Unintentionally post-syncing with Eau Rêvée d'Hubert from Sisley which I wore all day and Terre d'Hermès EDT which was my husband's birthday present yesterday. Why unintentionally? Well, we've been driving all night without any sleep at all (had no choice, but that's another story) and when I wanted to spray some Sisley again, well I was so tired I grabbed the wrong bottle...
Actually it's not that bad, very fresh and lots of vetiver, I'm not going to complain. The bitterness of Eau Rêvée d'Hubert is somewhat sweetened but the result is very vivid.

Pre-sync with Classique deodorant by JPG. I am not going to mince it. It's been a tough month. May sucked. I have been helping a friend with some heavy life stuff, and I can feel it. But I am glad I was there for her and still am. And the weather is not helping - it's gloomy, days are shorter, we had 90% of winter rainfall in May, it's just barely first official day of winter. I am growing gills by now... Any comforting fragrance, that can act as a blanket that I can put over myself and hide from the world is great. Long weekend ahead, and I am planning to have a few of these comforting blankets.

Haha another tricky one for me (I dislike citruses and aquatics, mostly, and almost cannot wear any perfume if it's really hot). Let's see...

- Eau du Sud. Aromatic citrus unisex-masc, I'd probably be able to wear this in hot weather.
- Fidji. Green floral that feels a little "cool" to me, wore it a while ago in warm sunshine and it was nice.
- From my samples, Essential Parfums Mon Vetiver (citrus-vetiver, if I can find it), Rosine's Un Zeste de Rose (citrus, rose and tea) or Ella K Pluie sur Ha Long (watery floral), Study #17 Miller & Bertaux (citrus-green).

But I'll be at a conference tomorrow, so I'll need something light and likeable, probably a floral.

Other than various citruses and/or aromatics : the usual suspects, such as Guerlain Vetiver, Aramis Tuscany, Knize Sec, Eau d'Hermes, Equipage Geranium and new-to-me Rochas Moustache Original 1949 EdT, which are already in the June rotation due to this unexpected lengthy heatwave ? These I find refreshing, but not necessarily cool.

Might give CdG Zagorsk a summer outing. One of the coldest scents I own, evoking a snowy forested landscape, with its notes of violet and hinoki. Otherwise it will be Hermes Equipage Geranium, where the geranium leaf (which has minty facets) provides coolness, perhaps with Etro Ambra (also a strong pelargonium note) for evening.
