The upcoming synch theme is:

March 24 - I Promise, I Have Nothing to Wear. When your are stuck for choice, or can’t be bothered, or grab the first thing.
(Wear either your easiest reach or let Pick my scent button function decide your scent of the day.)

(I will try to update this every Monday to leave time to prepare and will post something no earlier than on Wednesday to not make this a week-long synch)

Hello, dear fragrance enthusiasts, lovers and freaks, also fraghags, fraghos, smelly sisters and smelly brothers, and welcome to the Synchronized Fridays 2023!
First of all, I want to thank you so much for participating this year. I loved - and still love - reading through your choices, reasonings, stories and comments. The Friday Synch is just the gift that keeps on giving <3

Now let's make the 2023 a great perfume year, too – together!

The Great Friday Synch Schedule for 2023:

January: Redefining your priorities, High Hopes and Crazy Rhythms

January 6
- Out with the old, in with the new: Wear either a long neglected favourite or a new find that might become a new favourite!
January 13 - Last Year I Gave You My Heart: Making reference to Grant’s new feature Your Perfume Year in Review, wear and tell us about the one you wore the most in 2022.
(if you have finished the bottle already or you can't be bothered, it can be your second most worn, too!)
January 20 - Possession Obsession/Wild Child: Your most recent scent obsession or a scent/note you're currently wild about (tell us about it).
January 27 - You're Simply the Best: Wear a scent from your favourite house.

February: Managing your expectations

February 3
- Second Best: Wear a scent from your second favourite house.
February 10 - You Give Love a Bad Name: a perfume with a name that doesn't do it justice. Either a bad name or a name that just doesn't describe it properly.
February 17 - Meh Day: wear a fragrance rated 3 stars by Turin & Sanchez in The Perfume Guide, because mediocrity needs some love, too!
February 24 - Dreaming of dunes and scorching sun. Wear a fragrance that reminds you of sand - either in texture, feel, colour, taste, look, name or scent itself.

March: Ice is getting thin, just like your patience

March 3
- Spring is just around the corner. Wear a GREEN scent.
March 10 - Feel like hiding under a rock day. (A scent that's great when home alone? A melancholy scent? A scent to get through a difficult day? A scent that reminds you of ROCKS?)
March 17 - Who cares about spring and green. Autumn is sneaking upon us in Southern Hemisphere anyway. Wear a BROWN or GOLDEN scent.
March 24 - I Promise, I Have Nothing to Wear. When your are stuck for choice, or can’t be bothered, or grab the first thing.
(Wear either your easiest reach or let Pick my scent button function decide your scent of the day.)
March 31 - Everyone's a fool anyway, so let's make fun of it. Emoji Day: Use emojis to name your SOTD, & let others figure out what you're wearing.

April: Finding a newfound inner strength while lilacs and daisies are pushing up

April 7
- Spring cleaning. Wear your most polite or cleanest scent.
April 14 - Flower Power: Your favourite flower. Tell us about it. (You can get creative here. CaliFLOWER is also a flower)
April 21 - A scent to move mountains to, or Empowering perfumes – a scent that makes you feel powerful.
April 28 - Element: Air. A breeze of fresh air, a gust of wind or a rainstorm approaching? Or just an airy, breezy scent?

May: %$@# You, I Won't Do What You Tell Me

May 5
- O Hippie Day. Patchouli, anyone?
May 12 - Contrary Week. Select a fragrance with notes that you don't normally enjoy or care for but have made an exception to.
May 19 - (H)Angry Day. A fragrance that's FIRE and ANGER personified. Or, alternatively, smells so delicious it makes you HANGRY (hungry and angry at once).
May 26 - Polyamory in Fragranceland. Wear two perfumes that go well together, or two concentrations of the same perfume at the same time.

June: Okay, maybe chill a bit?

June 2
- Cool down, it's just a summertime. Wear a scent that gives you a COOLING sensation to make that livin' easy.
Friends in the Southern Hemisphere: Winter is coming. Brace yourselves with a WARMING fragrance.
June 9 - Carefree Day. Wear a frivolous and happy scent.
June 16 - Aha! Day: What perfume/note(s) were your 'aha' moment? The notes that particularly resonate with you.
June 23 - I need some (aroma)therapy. A scent that puts you in a relaxed zen-like state whether it's at a place like a spa or at a barbershop.

July: A Holiday Romance

July 7
- A Solo Trip aka A Solinote Day. Wear a fragrance that focuses on just one main note. (Can be a soliflore, solifruit, soliwood, solifood...)
July 14 - Dreaming of 'The One'. What fragrance your favourite literature/movie/comic etc. character would wear according to you.
July 21 - Finding 'The One'. Wear a perfume that was love at first sniff—no questioning, thinking, reviews or assistance required—sold!
July 28 - Taking Selfies together aka Photorealism Day. Wear something that smells so realistic it feels like a photograph of the scent it’s copying.

August: Road Trippin' With My Favourite Allies (To Say Nothing About The Bottle)

August 4
- A People Pleaser: The scent that when worn, consistently gives you the most compliments.
(If you're like me and you never get compliments, wear something you would wear on a roadtrip with friends or family)
August 11 - An evening by the bonfire: pick up a guitar and play! Wear a scent that reminds you of a SONG - or think up of a song that fits your SOTD, and share it.
August 18 - Another evening by the bonfire: Haikus and Limericks! Or, if you're verse-averse, wear a scent that just feels POETIC to you.
August 25 - My Trusted Friend & My Fairweather Friend: Either wear a scent that fits anytime, anywhere, or the one that needs certain conditions, weather or mood to shine.

September - Time to go outside and kick some leaves

September 1
- Autumn Blues. Wear a soothing scent while nature prepares for sleep.
Friends in the Southern Hemisphere: Spring time! Wear a scent that gives that spring to your step while the nature starts to roar and flourish.
September 8 - A stroll in the park. Dead leaves & dirty ground, or maybe birds singing in the sycamore trees?
September 15 - Deep in the Woods. Wear an OUD or SANDALWOOD scent.
September 22 - Air of Mystery. Something that makes you feel special or interesting - or that you can never figure out the notes.
September 29 - The Earth is Moving and I Can't Feel the Ground. Wear an EARTHY or a GROUNDING scent.

October - In the lamplight, the withered leaves collect at my feet and the wind begins to moan.
A time for memories, reminiscences and (horror) stories

October 6
- Copycat Day – wear a perfume that someone you’re close to wears or used to wear, or reminds you of someone you used to know.
(Could be another Basenoter if you're out of real-world examples!)
October 13 - Friday the 13th: Black cats & voodoo dolls. Wear a witchy scent.
October 20 - Perfume that evokes your most powerful scent memory; Or, alternatively, brings good memories.
October 27 - The Call of Cthulhu. The Lovecraftian, the uncanny, the cosmic and the frightening.

November - Cozying Up

November 3
- A Hot Cup – tea, coffee, cocoa, cider, or even hot toddies.
November 10 - November Rain, or Be Water, My Friend. Element: Water. Lakes, ponds, streams, bogs, lagoons, oceans, waves, raindrops... A bath? A sparkling water? Eau yes.
November 17 - Kitchen Sink: A fragrance with so many different notes it has everything except the kitchen sink
November 24 - Unaccountably Peckish. (A Late Night Snack)

December: Surviving Mariah Carey and a Frantic Gift Search

December 1
- Madness Returns: The perfume that started it all.
December 8 - Snowed in. Wear a fragrance that reminds you of snow - either in texture, feel, colour, taste, look, name or scent itself.
December 15 - It's all getting silly. Wear a scent that does not take itself seriously.
(A good time to pull out your celebrity scents, fun body sprays, fruity fragrances, scents that are so over the top that's ridiculous or maybe silly looking bottles or names)
December 22 - It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas. (Or party.) Your Special Occasion Scent.
December 29 - Yeah, it's over now, but I can breathe somehow: Let's look back at the year 2023. What scents did we crave, what did we wear the most, what have we found, what was important?

The Rules of The Synch:

TBH there aren't, really. What's important is to have fun while finding new ways to enjoy perfume.
But if you still need some guidance, then there you are:

• To synch, you basically need to wear a fragrance that more or less fits the day's theme and tell us about it. That's all.

• The themes are as open or as strict as you want them to be. Feel free to take a different spin on a theme or think up ways you can join with the wardrobe or mood or scent craving you already have. You don't need hundreds of scents to join. If you feel like you need hundreds of scents to join, then it means the synch was not made well. Tell me about it so I can learn.

• You can be as eloquent & wordy or as brief & straight to the point as you feel like! But it's always more awesome when we find time to write a short (or long!) sentence or two about our choice - what kind of scent it is, why did we pick it for the theme, etc. This makes it all the more interesting for everyone.

• We're here to celebrate Fridays and our love for fragrance and play a bit, so a friendly atmosphere is what we're striving for. Just come and chat and let's have some scented fun together, my dears!

My dear fragrance enthusiasts, lovers and freaks – let's have a wonderfully scented year!

As the 2022 is slowly going down the drain, it's time to get our hopes up for 2023 and think about how can we make this year more fun – with perfume.

First of all:
• What did you enjoy about this year's Friday Synch?
• What you did not enjoy?
• Is there something you would like to see go?
• Is there something you would like to see more of?
• Is there some theme from this year that you'd like to see again in 2023?
• Is there a theme that you want to see returned from the older years?
• Is there something that prevents you from joining or enjoying the synchs more often? Do you vibe with the themes or not at all? Especially if you're not a regular syncher, I guess.

I myself am happy that we went away from location and brand synchs – the location synchs are fun and good and nicely challenging, but I feel like I don't miss them yet. Do you? The brand synchs are actually fun, but 1) they're not accessible to everyone and 2) they actually do pop up naturally and I like it that way. What do you think?

I am actually glad to see I was proved wrong and I don't see the need to put the user's days back again into the synch. They were great fun for sure, but now I see how they can get clique-y easily and deter newer or less involved participants.

I still love our Equinox days and all the weather-appropriate days (our friends in the South Hemisphere included). But it's me. Are you done with them or do you want more of them?

I feel like themes that revolve about more difficult choices – like Your un-easiest reach, Nostalgia Scent or Feisty Day – were exciting, yet slightly less popular, as people don't often want to wear a fragrance that is difficult for them or less loved or something we already grew out of and may no longer have an access too...especially on Friday. But they gave us some of the greatest stories to read and tell! So I guess that any theme can be great in its own way. What are your thoughts on the more difficult synchs?

I see that panned by The Guide/Praised by The Guide synch days are still very popular. Do you still love them and would gladly synch the oud out of it again? Are you bored by them and would like to give this theme a rest for a while? Tell me.
There was a suggestion to add additional The Perfume Guide synch day – for the fragrances rated 3 stars, because the mediocrity needs some love, too! :D I personally like the idea. What do you think about it?

Do you want to see more synch days revolving around scent profiles and actual notes – like Fruity Day, Herbal Day, Myrrh & Incense Day, Nuts Day, Wear a Warming Scent, etc? (These were the themes for this year, next year would have different ones)

Or do you want more open-ended, random synchs on varying fun/odd themes like Cheap Cheap Day, Haikus & Limericks, Picture Day, Emoji Day, Resolutions/Looking Back, Grandpa/Grandma synch, etc? (These were the themes for this year, we might keep some of the more popular ones and think up new ones)

Also, the ideas of what you want to see next year, keep them coming!

Tell me everything, my dear fragrance enthusiasts, lovers and freaks, frag hags, frag hoes, scented ladies and gentlemen, perfumed witches, devils, unicorns and merpersons, smelly sisters and brothers.

In scents we trust.

Yours truly,
Smelly Alice

You did a great job, Alice. I thought the themes were very well expressed this year. Even if people didn’t have an exact match they came up with interesting workarounds that could relate. That’s why I don’t worry too much if I don’t have a perfect fit.

Thought of a possible theme:

Wear a perfume that was love at first sniff—no questioning, thinking, reviews or assistance required—sold!

Looking forward to what others may suggest!

Thank you for your kind words!
Also, the praise should go to all the participants and all of you who were brainstorming the ideas.
I'm just a vessel here 😀

And I do love your idea.

As the 2022 is slowly going down the drain, it's time to get our hopes up for 2023 and think about how can we make this year more fun – with perfume.

First of all:
• What did you enjoy about this year's Friday Synch?
2022 sync received the most activity in the history of these syncs starting with 2010

• What you did not enjoy?
Maybe we should try to sync on that day and forgo pre-syncs and post syncs. It has become increasing saturated. Some of us (myself included) do a lot of pre-sync and post sync. It takes away from it.

• Is there something you would like to see go?

• Is there something you would like to see more of?
Accommodation so that every individual should have at least one suggestion within the sync.

Encourage everyone to discuss more about about their choice and how they think it relates to the theme. Individuals could ask other individuals why they chose their scent, encourage more dialogue.
• Is there some theme from this year that you'd like to see again in 2023?

Panned by the Guide in some shape and form with some twists so that it's less redundant

I'd like to have Haikus and Limericks, those are fun.

Synthesia color, texture theme

• Is there a theme that you want to see returned from the older years?

Don't use my structure format from years past

Don't revisit BNer days

Don't use geographical locations

Don't use decades or time periods

Don't use particular houses or individual noses

More innovative and creative themes where individual can come up with interesting selections
• Is there something that prevents you from joining or enjoying the synchs more often? Do you vibe with the themes or not at all? Especially if you're not a regular syncher, I guess.

It's become pretty saturated overall, there's four other syncs. Some have been turned off by it. It has lost some of its magic, but maybe it's just me.

Yes, we should stay away from the geographical locations.
I am actually glad to see I was proved wrong and I don't see the need to put the user's days back again into the synch. They were great fun for sure, but now I see how they can get clique-y easily and deter newer or less involved participants.

Yes, we don't need them. Actually it gave the sync a bad rap.
I still love our Equinox days and all the weather-appropriate days (our friends in the South Hemisphere included). But it's me. Are you done with them or do you want more of them?
We always have them every sync, at least for mine. Personally I'd like something else instead.

The problem with difficult syncs is that some individual may not want to put the time to creatively chose a scent if it requires significant effort on their part. They might give up and decide not to sync that week. I've been in that situation quite a few times with the weekend sync, can't think of a pick.

I see that panned by The Guide/Praised by The Guide synch days are still very popular. Do you still love them and would gladly synch the oud out of it again? Are you bored by them and would like to give this theme a rest for a while? Tell me.

As said earlier, create a different form of Panned by the Guide so that it isn't exactly redundant.

Maybe a scent that Luca gave bad marks that you enjoy, just an example.
There was a suggestion to make another The Perfume Guide synch – for the fragrances rated 3 stars, because the mediocrity needs some love, too! :D I personally like the idea. What do you think about it?

The only free day left remaining is Thursday. At this point it's become pretty saturated and some individuals have been turned off by it.
Do you want to see more synch days revolving around scent profiles and actual notes – like Fruity Day, Herbal Day, Myrrh & Incense Day, Nuts Day, Wear a Warming Scent, etc? (These were the themes for this year, next year would have different ones)

These would be fine, maybe different ones that haven't been used previously or haven't been done in a long time.

Personally I like ones that involve more creativity and using ones imagination.
Also, the ideas of what you want to see next year, keep them coming!

How about a Green Day (not the band of course).

Yes ClockworkAlice did a great job for 2022.

I think it should be encouraged that there are no right or wrong answers for whatever choice the individual(s) pick for that week's theme. Some individuals may not realize that when they are coming with a choice for the sync.

@N.CAL Fragrance Reviewer - thank you so much for your valuable insights! 💚💚💚
I agree with you on so many of these.

I actually always try to stress that people don't have to match their choice perfectly and that creative choices are super welcome, but I agree it should be expressed even more clearly - I'll think about how to do it in better ways. Maybe a disclaimer?

I agree on encouraging people to tell more about their choice. It can be done by asking them to elaborate, for example. Communication!

Re: Panned by the Guide 3 stars: I think I was unclear here, I'm sorry. I meant including a "rated 3 stars" day, not about making a whole new Synch for The Guide!
Edit: I edited my original post a bit so that it would be more clear I'm talking about Synch days in Friday Synch and not an additional Synch thread. Thank you for showing me the flaws of my writing so I can get it fixed!

I am an infrequent sync participant but not because the prompts were uninteresting. I think you did a wonderful job hosting the Synchronized Fridays thread, Clockwork Alice.

I think just about any topic offers multiple points of entry. I will also say that I am most interested in reading a bit of explanation about why a particularly scent was chosen--that is, the poster's thought process in choosing a particular scent, whatever it might be.

• Is there some theme from this year that you'd like to see again in 2023?

I just went back and read the entire 2022 list, and honestly, they all seemed worth repeating. It didn't seem like there were any real stinkers.

I will also say that I am most interested in reading a bit of explanation about why a particularly scent was chosen--that is, the poster's thought process in choosing a particular scent, whatever it might be.

TBH, I feel like most of the sync posters are pretty good about giving a little synopsis of their choice. There are a few reticent folks, of course, but I commend Alice on jumping in and giving little nudges to prompt the participants. She's a good cheerleader.

Misleading - Fragrances that are misleading by either name or notes.

We had that this year:

05. 13 - Mis-Named Day: perfumes you think don't smell at all like the name would indicate

Bravo @ClockworkAlice for a brilliant year of synchs, & thank you for taking this on again for next year! 👏

l agree with pretty much all of your thoughts in your initial post. However, although l'm probably in the minority here, l think the synchs based on The Guide have got a bit old. Sacrilege? Maybe. 😊

l had one idea: Your Favourite Soliflore/Solinote Fragrance. l may be back with more if l think of anything...

Any possibility for a sandalwood/oud sync day or theme perhaps?

Excellent work @ClockworkAlice, I'm excited to be more active with the sync thread in the coming new year!!

I'm a very infrequent syncher (for reasons unrelated to the syncs) but I've really enjoyed reading the posts! I thought this year's themes were great and I was disappointed I could not sync more often. I'm hoping to participate a little more next year, even though most of my collection is still packed away.

In relation to the themes, seasonal themes are always fun, as well as personal/interpretive themes; it's really enjoyable to read everyone's personal experiences/views. In keeping with that, my one suggestion might be empowering perfumes/perfumes which make you feel powerful, or something along those lines. I wouldn't want to suggest changes, though I'm with teardrop with regard to The Guide. Perhaps we could have a look at another reviewer, or one on Basenotes?

A few more ideas:

My Trusted Friend - wear a scent that fits anytime, anywhere
My Fairweather Friend - a scent that needs certain conditions, weather or mood to shine

Days for moods:
Melancholy day
O Happy Day
(H)Angry Day
Frivolous/carefree day
Feel like hiding under a rock day
Mischievous day
A scent to move mountains to
???

And I feel like someone might have suggested it last year, but I just thought:

Your most recent scent obsession (tell us about it)

And what's your own stance on this?
Opinnnionnnns, I need them!

Oh, I love The Guide days, both pro and con. I like the way they bring out strong feelings in everyone, whether outrage or pride.

I like these, too:

My Trusted Friend - wear a scent that fits anytime, anywhere
My Fairweather Friend - a scent that needs certain conditions, weather or mood to shine

I feel like these ^ could be done on the same day, and given a "Pick One" choice

Also like these, although I think "mood" days could be problematic, since people who aren't feeling it on the day might just not join in.

Melancholy day
O Happy Day

First of all - thank you @ClockworkAlice for your work and your (as far as I've noticed) lovely personality! :) Very appreciated!

I will try to give my input on some aspects you asked about:
* I like synchs where everyone could be included. Themes like brands can exclude some so then I would prefer to put it like "wear something from your favorite house" rather than "wear Serge Lutens"
* I like weather themes, location seems tricky, so does users
* Challenges were fun!
* The guide is fun to have in some way. I vote for your 3 star idea :)
* As I said I like open themes so Cheap or Fruity both seems fine and of course grandpa
* I came to think of a new, at least as far as I know, but to use the feature "Pick a random fragrance"

I look forward to a new year of synchronization!

There's not much work on my part, all the great themes are all our collective work :)
I also like the 3 star-rated idea, it would be a different spin on The Guide's theme. It's @Kotori's idea, by the way, not mine ;)

I see quite many of us enjoy the weather themes.
Thank you for your input!

I thought overall the 2022 sync ideas were great, even if I did not join some of them. Fab job! 👏
I do like weather/season syncs, perhaps because my preferences are strongly influenced by weather and season.

Contrary Week - Select a fragrance with notes that you don't normally enjoy or care for but have made an exception to.
I like this idea.
Another one could be a perfume you like from a house that you're not normally a fan of.

l had one idea: Your Favourite Soliflore/Solinote Fragrance. l may be back with more if l think of anything...
I like this, too, as long as not too restrictive, e.g. I would have nothing to wear on jasmine soliflore day.

Your most recent scent obsession (tell us about it)
This is nice! Could be a particular perfume, or could be a particular note or accord you're obsessed with...

I also like the "favourite house" approach rather than specifying a brand.

If we’re going to do a notes-based synch, which I know we’ve done a lot of in past years, we could do “A Hot Cup,” which I don’t think we’ve done before and could easily encompass tea, coffee, cocoa, cider, or even hot toddies.
We have done something very similar a few years before, I think! It was called Raise the cup, and I think it wasn't strictly for hot beverages, it included mostly the booze I guess and the hot ones were left as an option. But it's one theme that's worth coming back to, I absolutely agree! We could do this for the hot beverages this time.

I like people's ideas so far :) I love element synchs... (earth, fire etc), and I love the forest synchs. Also the music related synchs I find enjoyable. I remember I enjoyed the Breakfast theme and the Guide synch too. I personally find the limerick and haiku synchs difficult. But that's just me.... Also how about your most "dirty" or not polite scent and then your most polite or cleanest scent.
Also.... The discontinued scent in your wardrobe you will miss the most when it's gone.

We could certainly have some of these. A scent to move mountains to would be good, leaves plenty to imagination.

How about scenario picks. Maybe come up with a "story" theme that depicts a scenario where a fragrance may fall into place.

For instance: Your favorite football/soccer team won the FIFA World Cup, what scent would you wear when joining in the festivities? That's just one example, It could be some other kind of example. A couple of story lines that everyone can name a scent that they would wear in those occasions.

I also have not synched often --mostly because I forget to search for it before putting on my SOTD--so no one's fault but my own.

I'm not sure if this has been done before but: the scent that when worn, consistently gives you the most compliments. I've found scents that are not necessarily my favorite are ones that people like on me.

As a newbie there were many times I couldn't join because my collection is quite small, though it is increasing exponentially.

I second Kotori's suggestion for the fragrance that brought you to the rabbit hole.

Also as a newbie I've been trying to identify what notes particularly resonate with me, so maybe something along the lines of what perfume/note(s) were your 'aha' moment?

I personally find the limerick and haiku synchs difficult.
Me, too. Am simply not good at wordsmithing.
Also how about your most "dirty" or not polite scent and then your most polite or cleanest scent.
Also.... The discontinued scent in your wardrobe you will miss the most when it's gone.
Nice ideas!
