All those boxes are ticked ding, ding, ding ding! by Estée Lauder Azurée. In fact, Pippin06, if you were describing Azurée the description would be exactly what you have written in your post.

Here are the notes of the current version of Azurée, according to the Estée Lauder website. It is drier and less floral than the one launched in 1969. Just my opinion that the current version is excellent; no need to go searching for vintage or anything like that.

TOP NOTES
  • Basil
  • Jasmine
  • Citrus

MIDDLE NOTES
  • Armoise
  • Vetiver
  • Rose

BASE NOTES
  • Patchouli
  • Moss
  • Amber
  • Ambrox

Thank you SO much for this excellent suggestion, and for looking up the notes, FiveOaksBouquet. I really appreciate it! As you may know, I love aramis, so I've not doubt I'd enjoy Azuree as well. In fact, I will look into it asap. :)

For the summer, I'm thinking citrus or green chypre. Citrus chypres are hard to do nowadays without oakmoss, and they are usually sweet.. Green chypre (in the mold of mentioned Cristalle): Aliage (which is the mother of the masculine Devin), or less reasonably priced things like Synthetic Jungle, Futur, Ormonde Jayne Tiare.

I like Azuree a lot too. For me though it's a warm, wintery leather-though I think back when it was launched, it was advertised as a beachy thing (go figure). The current one is less hefty than the old, which is not a bad thing if one wants to use it in the summer.

Many great recommendations already, also adding:

- Yatagan de Caron (though more of a piney fougere admittedly),

- Duc de Vervins by Houbigant,

- Coty Preferred Stock,

- Caractere by Daniel Hechter,

- even the summer limited editions, whichever is currently affordable and easily available, of Azzaro PH (since these are more than simple classic yet fresh fougeres),

- Faconnable pour Homme

- the Le Lion and/or the Equus version of Lalique Homme (ideally in EDP strength for either)

- Eau Sauvage Parfum.

Would love some suggestions for an at least somewhat unique (can be designer or reasonably priced niche) chypre suitable for spring and summer. I also love leather in perfumes, and am looking for something that is not at all sweet. Thank you!
The only I could recommend from experience would be Lalique Pour Homme (Lion bottle). That said, a chypre in summer (depending on temp/climate) is a tricky thing. I did wear this in summer evenings for formal events and dinners many years ago - in my early 20s - and found it worked well. But for daytime/casual wear - I'm not so sure.

For something less traditional...Aventus?

I'll throw out a slightly different recommendation that straddles the line between citrus aromatic and a very light chypre: Eau de Rochas Homme. Starts off with a fizzy, sparkling blast of lemon and lime then eventually fades to a base of clean vetiver, cedar, a touch of oakmoss, and musk.

I only recently picked up my bottle (for quite cheap) and this is how I described it in another thread: "It’s definitely sparkling and effervescent up top - aldehydes and bright lemon/lime hesperidic vibes like a fizzy Sprite. Fantastic opening, kind of like an updated Eau Sauvage vibe minus the herbs. From there it goes into an interesting woody base - feels like vetiver, clean cedar, and a bit of white musk. It’s hard to describe, but the base has a slightly sour, oiled wood vibe that doesn’t really remind me of anything else - it’s somehow cooling and melancholy in a way I wasn’t expecting after the bright top. Performance is light, so I’ve been overspraying and experimenting with spraying a bit on clothes - the top notes fade after 90 mins as you’d expect for a citrus aromatic. The base is pretty quiet, but it hangs around for a while. I sprayed some on a test strip and could still smell the base faintly a week later, which beats a lot of louder projecting scents in my wardrobe."

Chanel Christalle
It's so good! Totally unisex, even masculine by today's standard with that oakmoss-y dry down. It can be hard to find, it goes in and out of stock on the Chanel website, but it is still in production. Especially since you love classics I think you'll like this.
Sounds perfect for me! Thank you! :)

Thank you so much, Pep! Going to blind buy this one. I love your taste, and it sounds like I'll love it. Will let you know what I think. :)

I would be careful though, I just recently sampled this and was surprised to find it smells a lot like Chanel No.5. It is nice for sure, but if you're not into Chanel No. 5 style soapy aldehydes might not be a safe blind but.

Knowing @Pippin06's abiding love for the aldehydic beast that is Aramis, hopefully this one works out for him!

Indeed. I love Chanel no. 5--for it's fragrant beauty and history. If two classic fragrances were happily married, I believe it would be aramis and Chanel no. 5.

Clandestine Laboratories - Vert

Notes: Galbanum combined with yuzu, bergamot, lemon, key lime, lavender, marjoram, coriander, geranium, Jasmine Auriculatum, blue hemlock, opoponax, cistus, loads of vetiver, patchouli, castoreum and deer musk reconstruction.

Not sure it's technically a chypre, but I think if you like classic green chypres, you'd like this one. I'm burning through my sample and will be buying a FB for sure (my second from CL).

In line with the Azuree recommendation, Aromatics Elixir is another amazing dry chypre, as is Lauder for Men, if you don’t have it already. And both perform great for me in the heat.

And I would be remiss not to mention Giorgio for Men, though you have to be more careful with it in hot weather. 🙂

If you want a heavyweight Chypre, then Boucheron Pour Homme EDP ( with Aromatics Elixir / Aramis 900 and Cerruti 1881 as similar options but I prefer the Boucheron).

If you want a light Chypre that won't be a beast in the summer heat, then Eau du Sud (with Eau de Rochas Homme as a second choice). If it hadn't gone in the Covid Frag Cull, I would have suggested Armani Eau Pour Homme for this.

For something light, not exactly in the Chypre style, but with a gentle leather note, ADP Colonia Intensa.

Seconding Eau du Sud, from personal experience.
