Sauvage Elixir: My conclusion

I liked OG Sauvage at launch in 2015, when the ambroxan craze started to take root.
But then everyone started wearing it, so I had to back away slowly.
Flankers were launched and all disappointed because it was more of the same.

Enter Sauvage Elixir.
At first sniff I really liked it - although incredibly strong, perhaps too strong, I really liked it.
But then I noticed I could never pick it out in a crowd, and would always ask my co-worker what he is wearing.

Turns out I like Elixir because it blends with whatever else is happening in the air and magnifies it.
It usually boosts whatever I am wearing and I cannot help but 'love' the impromtu aroma therapy sesh.
It never fails to get my attention, although I don't think I can wear it by itself...

So, I have concluded that I will secure a bottle for the sole purpose of layering.
This is what I do with Le Labo's AnOther13 and Xerjoff's Erba Pura among others.
Too much by itself, but perfect as an under-layer to my SOTD.

For the layerers and blenders here, this, is a must have.
You're welcome :)

Layering such a potent one like Sauvage Elixir is very counter intuitive to me personally. We all here know that there are virtually no impossibilities with fragrances, but I would think that mixing subtle ones would produce a more wanted result. Please let us know what specifically you have layered with the Dior and whether you think it was a success.

First, it is nice to read from one of the OG BNers 🤩
So in my experience with layering, you never know what you are going to get, which is why I do it :)
I find that strong members don't always translate to stronger outcomes - molecules can cancel each other out.

But...one peculiar bomb of a combo is Kouros and Erba Pura...OMG 🥰

With SE, I layered with Clive Christian 1872, a fragrance I found challenging to love in its linearity and abstractness.
SE brings it to life wonderfully, adding what (for me) was missing - a blooming boost.
It is not always success though; SE plus Aventus was a disaster to my nose, smelled like old automotive carpet.

When it’s freshly sprayed Elixir does smell best in the air. On skin it’s a hefty punch. To get around this I use it in 2 different ways.

Firstly I either spray a freshly laundered zip hoodie 2 or 3 times and set to one side ready to wear a couple of days later, then when I put it on I just get big wafts of the drydown throughout the day.

Secondly I’ve also decanted some into one of those small 2ml sample sprays so I can microdose. 3 or 4 well placed sprays is plenty for me. It’s so persistent that microdosing works great and the projection is still big.

My favorite Dior Sauvage Elixir layering is with Dior Homme Parfum. 💣🤯

What.. what does that smell like?!
Don't have my DHP where I'm residing, and perhaps that's a good thing.

While I've worn this layering multiple times, I haven't worn it recently, so I don't have any words to describe it. To be honest, most people wouldn't have any words to describe it either. 🤣

Precisely because I don't like this one on skin, I don't like it. The sillage is nice from a few feet away, but up close it's not that enjoyable, and on skin it's as scratchy as can be until a good 7-8 hours in, at which point it's actually okay. Just too many other things I like that overlap with the various elements of this and smell great up close.

The Elixir's really good. It's the only one I'd consider wearing and I think it's by far the best French contribution to the dark blue trend (I prefer the Italian brands' take on it).

I'd just leave it as it is tbh. I think the original Sauvage is a half-finished fragrance (that allowed Dior to build flankers on top of it, with deeper/richer notes), so I think your point makes a lot of sense. The ambroxan-heavy profile does tend to outweigh the aromatic woods in Elixir when wearing, but still, I'd say it's best off just leaving it as it is. But then I am generally loathe to layering anyway.

So I finally tried this, and yes it is good, VERY good.
I will be rocking this layer on a regular.
Thanks for the tip @milkbaby !!

I'm glad that you tried it and enjoyed it! 😊👍

After I initially found this layering combo successful, I posted it online a few times previously, but for some reason people must've read it and thought "unpossible!" 🤷🤣 I think that you may be the first person who took me seriously and tried out! 🙏🏻

I have shared with a few fragheads locally and all agree it is a beautiful combo. I think most people are afraid of the babies combining powerhouse fragrances would have :ROFLMAO: but if you already like powerhouse...it's a no brainer.
DHI was too linear for me initially, but with Elixir is is just right; it's what it should have been all along.

I just tried the DHP + Sauvage Elixir combo yesterday, one spray of each on top of each other... it was really good. It was hard to tell where one started and the other ended, a very rich combination. I think I'll try to wear it to work this week (one spray of each) even though it's getting into the 90's here

My experience as well - they blend so well and effortlessly together, I was surprised.
