Perry Ellis Oud Black Vanilla Absolute (how to get it?)

See, this is why you can't take any breaks from Basenotes, cuz if you do, you'll miss the fragrance exclusives/news bus! So I took a little step away from the boards for a good part of the second half of 2015, but when I came back around November/December, I saw all the hype around this Perry Ellis fragrance. For the then asking price, it appeared to be a great value, so I immediately began searching online for a bottle, but to no avail. It was out of stock EVERYWHERE! I'd really like to get my hands on a bottle at a reasonable price! Any suggestions? Should I write to Perry Ellis' headquarters?!? Did anyone buy a backup bottle or two that they're willing to sell at a REASONABLE price?!? Anyone selling decants? Desperate fragrance heads wanna know!

My guess is given that whole oud line was released only at discounters and not a lot of it i am left to think they were testing the waters to gauge the market. It seems the only one out of the three that really took off was black vanilla. I doubt they knew it was gonna be as popular as it has become as it sold out in a matter of a week or two after word got out about how close it was to sdv. I would bet they are making more right now. Either that or the line was tanked before a pn official release and thestock they had of it was liquidated. But seeing its still on te falic fashion group website i think its gonna come back around. I just hope they dont go messing with it as its awesome the way it is. Unfortunately aside from waiting the only way to get it is to pay up. Rumor is some random stores have some. I would check the perfume stores at the mall.

Yeah, I may have to comb a few fragrance stores to see if they by some miracle have it.

Out of stock, not that I'd buy it "blind" at about $60 anyway.
Wow, that was fast. They had seven of them a few minutes before i posted. Not a blind purchase for me. I've worked my way through a 10 ml decant, and was glad to see a bottle available. I was giving a heads-up to those who clearly feel the same way, brother! It's not some magic juice, just a nice fragrance. Can't have too many of those, LOL. It cost $50, with discount. I think that's a fair price for what it is, which, while not Royal Oud,( to which it bears an initial resemblance) is still a decent parfum no one else is going to be wearing.

As to the insinuation of buying it "blind", and teasing someone who would, relax! Clearly this thread has a few people who would be glad for a heads-up. At least let me cover my cornflakes first! Ha ha.

didn't you hear? It has to be vintage or its probably synthetic dreck.

Well, synthetic it is, as are they all. But not too dreckish, in my humble opinion. It is true, I should have just spent the money on a night of drinking> I did buy it, and said to myself, "Why? Why do you need another synthetic oud?" There's a problem here, I'm sure.

Ah, you beat me to it! I was going to say isn't it already synthetic dreck? LOL. Anyway I recently acquired Dolcelisir L`Erbolario, which is so good it fills a bunch of gourmand/tonka/tobacco-ish/vanilla-ish functions for me, meaning I'd probably only want PEOBVA as swap bait (so the price would have to be lower), but it's nice to be able to sample a scent before using it to acquire something else.

Now we know where those seven bottles on fragex went: Bigsly building up for a gourmand swap!
FWIW: dolcelisir sounds delicious, though i'm not a huge fan of gourmands. Black Vanilla's at least not overly foody, in that sense. But who doesn't want to smell like apple pie?

It was a joke. I like to poke fun at bigsly once in awhile.

I'm not against "stockpiling," though I haven't had the opportunity yet (other than the Horizon bottles at the dollar store several years ago), but $50 a bottle is not something I would do other than for something like Creeds/Bonds that are popular. I might go $250 for 10 bottles of this scent, but I'm not even sure about that.

By then the buzz'll be over, and the next trend will be pulling into the station...The thread is started by, and directed to those interested in the fragrance, inquiring about availability. Bigsly doesn't want it at any price: fair enough. I can't imagine finding bottles of Creed for $50, That'd be worth stockpiling for sure.

I usually swap or buy in lots to keep the cost per bottle low. Then sometimes there's a deal I can't pass up, such as Amber by Iceberg, 100 ml at Scentedmonkey for less than $9. I can't imagine enjoying this PE scent more than Amber.

When I saw the seven left at fragex i almost bought multiples because I could've probably worked it out so my bottle was essentially free. Then I thought: naw, I don't want to peddle frags. I can see though that an astude person could figure out which scents have enough interest to turn a profit for a decanter. I paid $20 for 10mls to satisfy my curiosity. That works out to $200 for the bottle that cost $50!

Ebay takes 10% right off the top, so if they sold it all through that platform theyve got $180 left over. Each vial costs about $2.20 to ship, so thats another $22 off for 10 x 10ml vials, leaving $158. Unless you are buying in huge bulk, envelopes are roughly .50 a piece and vials are .30, leaving $150, or a bit less. Still great margins, but it takes a while to sell the whole bottle and you are usually buying new ones to sell, and few people choose a winner 100% of the time, so its not uncommon to be stuck with a bottle you are not decanting and either selling it at cost, or a small loss (rarely some profit).

If you can manage to do a lot of volume outside of ebay, you will do better, but my experience with decanting was that the most you can hope is to get it to pay for your fragrance hobby (for some of us, thats a considerable expense). At best, you can bring in a few hundred a month (on a good month).

The biggest point I think people underestimate is how long it takes to fill dozens of orders by hand. Spraying, filling, sealing, labeling, printing labels, affixing them, and then sealing envelopes takes way longer than you think it does. I probably could have been more efficient but I think I got my routine down to about 2-3 minutes per "order" if it was only one or two vials. The volume of business you'd need to do to bring in a couple hundred dollars a month would occupy at least 15 hours, if not more, so you are looking at an hourly rate of $20-40 an hour. It is decent money considering that no one is declaring it as income, so it is equivalent to roughly $27-$53 an hour at a 25% blended tax rate, but not crazy big bucks.

Couple that with the fact that unless you have wholesale or exclusive / restricted access, other decanters will jump in on a price war with you and shrink your margins. At best, you might run through a few bottles of profit before people start moving in on your business, so you have to constantly keep guessing what fragrances will be in high demand and update your inventory accordingly (sometimes guessing wrong).

To be honest, the people who should be dominating the decant game are retailers like Lucky Scent, who have access to otherwise unavailable scents. They could easily hire someone part time to fill these orders; I assume agreements with the fragrance vendors prevent them from doing so.

Those are very good points. Believe me, I wouldn't even want to start. I've sold hundreds of items on the 'Bay, from coins to motorcycle parts; comics and sports cards. The more exclusive your product...and I'm referring to 1830's bust half dollars, Honus Wagner and Ted Williams cards, etc, the more demanding the customer. Not only can those fees be frustrating, but the occasional customer who holds your 100% feedback hostage because they want their money back, and you can see the package was delivered because the tracking number says it was...oh, believe me, I have no desire to peddle to a bunch of fragrant prima donnas! :rolleyesold: And certainly, if I did, it wouldn't be to sell a scent that, while pleasant, is still just a $50 parfum...I admire and appreciate all the people who've sold me decants. Why, that's how I inexpensively have been able to discover that Royal Oud is a masterpiece, Égoïste is a gem, and Knize Ten is a big no-go!!

I'd strongly recommend to anyone interested in this really good Perry Ellis perfume (and it is worth a go) to spend the $20 and get 10 mls. Mine came in a great reusable atomizer (I'll just reload it from my own bottle for taking it to the gym, etc), and lasted a while (still half full, TBH). Some will say even that's too much, but as far as hobbies go, it's a cheap way to smell good, have fun, and babble in silly threads. Buy a decant! You may be bored of the scent by the time it's gone. You may move up to a decant of SDV. That's my advice to the original poster. I could even send you the ebay account info of the nice woman who sold it to me (100% feedback, too).

I've seen plenty of sites that say "email us to be notified when this item is back in stock" or something that effect. Guess what? I have never been notified! They may hope to get it back in stock, but that seems to rarely happen with an item like this (limited run, apparently). Now if the site had a reservation list, and you were guaranteed to get a bottle at retail or else they'd give you a $20 credit, I would be a lot less skeptical.

Sweet, dude! So the system there works. I never received notice from them...I bet that list is long, and supplies are meagre. Imagine how batshit people would be if it was a true masterpiece! It's kind of like watching the hype for the next hunger games movie, or something: "oh, really? Wake me up when it gets to DVD!" LOL. (BTW: I bought a bottle, so I am part of the hype too)

I am currently at Miami international airport and just smelled this at the duty-free. They have tons of bottles. Unfortunately I cannot purchase because I am not international travel. The scent is amazing. Wow it is definitely a winner. It is SICK!

How much was it selling for at Miami international??

I'm sorry I didn't even ask about Ellis or other scents because I was unable to buy since I was flying domestic. I was just happy to sniff them and not get kicked outfit being domestic. they said I could stay and look around but I wasn't in buy mode.

Also sniffed a few other hard to get scents for me. Narcisco bleu noir was there I liked it - yes like declaration but better.

Tried the ideal cologne by guerlain I liked it albeit a bit light.

If I could buy I would have bought all 3. Had never sniffed any of them before.

They also had DHI which I already own. They also had plenty of the other two Oud Ellis scents but I didn't sniff.

^ That's weird. I can buy whatever frag I want (but no liquor) at Houston's Intercontinental's Duty Free shop whenever I fly domestic. At discount too. Wonder if they're bending rules there...
