Hi Guys,

Before I make the cardinal mistake of buying a perfume solely based on the hype made on the internet by the fragrance community I thought I would order a sample of it. I am talking about Parfums De Marly Layton Exclusif. Boy ! Am I not really confused about this fragrance !! I don't know if I like it or not? My impressions about it is, yes it is a nice Fragrance but nothing ground breaking or revolutionary about it !! It does not get a wow effect from me ! And it takes alot of effort for a perfume to get a wow from me ! In terms of fragrances I don't get easily pleased. I am looking for something complexed something unique. PDM Layton Exclusif comes out to me as a freshie, it says OUD but nowhere do I smell OUD. So what should I do about it ? I mean just to give you an example the kind of fragrances I like and would rate better than Layton Exclusif would be The Memo Range of Fragrances they are pretty interesting than PDM Layton Exclusif. Memo Fragrances are very different !! Very unlike what people have normally smelled it. For e.g. I would rate Memo African Leather as a very interesting fragrance compared to PDM Layton Exclusif. Layton Exclusif would be a nice addition to the perfume wardrobe but a the price it sells it is a little pricey !! Do guys should I pull the trigger or pass on it ??

Buy what is the consensus here ? does it garner respect ??
PDM is a controversial house that gets a lot of hate and a lot of love from different segments of the Basenotes community.

I think they're generally not worth people's time, but that's just me; PDM is clearly not targeting someone with my kind of fragrance sensibilities.

Since you don't seem to like it very much I would suggest you give it a pass.

Plenty of fish in the sea.

Life is too short and resources are too scarce to buy and wear expensive perfumes you aren't crazy about.

Agree.

It was a pass for me, but that shouldn't influence whether it is a pass for you. I have waaaayyyy too many other things to pick from each day to add that to the pile.

You don't love it, so there is a need to buy it.
One should buy only "love" fragrances

I'm going to go with a different angle. Live with that sample of it (I assume you have a few ml of it), try it again, wear it, take a break from it and forget it, then revisit it.

I think by doing the above you'll be able to establish if you want a bottle of it.

What put me off it was the Layton element of it. I can't get along with Layton. I tried them both within a short time of each other, having samples of each. Once I'd blocked Layton out of my mind and left the samples alone for a while it simply helped going back to Layton Exclusif afresh.

I think the same applies for any fragrance you have a sample of, take a break from it, go back to it after a few weeks, see how you feel about it then.

Hi Guys,

Before I make the cardinal mistake of buying a perfume solely based on the hype made on the internet by the fragrance community

Let me stop you right there

Everything about that statement is the epitome of woe in this community. Blindly following hype leads to things like Jeremy Fragrance, the creation of "G.O.A.T." and "Unicorn" fragrances, plus the whole concept of "The Game".

Sharing our findings to make informed purchases is probably the biggest reason most of us join BN. Granted, you'll still experience hype, showboating, and the eternal quest for compliments in the Male Fragrance Discussion forum because boys will be boys, but you're onto something with your mention of Memo.

If you want to stay in niche, I'd try some Amouage (Epic Man and Jubilation XXV are good starters), and give Diptyque a try for some nice masculine options including a decent oud (Oud Palao). Definitely think hard on the Layton Exclusif, as the regular Layton is little more than a designer clone at increased strength IMO.

I personally found Layton Exclusif a rough ride, I’m still somewhat undecided myself. The smoky first hour was very nice with the Apple note humming in the background. In my review I noted that at this point it smells like a coffee drinking smoker trying to cover up the smell of these bad habits with a spray of Boss Bottled, which as odd as it sounds, is actually very nice. But the later spiky woody element was almost too much for me to feel comfortable throughout the wearings. I like to overspray, so rough woods in the base are not welcome. My decant may be enough.

Sounds to me like you didn't like it. So why are you even considering buying it?? Just because other people like it?? This hobby is overwhelmingly subjective, only buy stuff that YOU love.
You can get ideas of what to try based on what others like, but it has to smell good to you.

There's no oud in it whatsoever and PDM did not list it as one of the notes for Layton Exclusif. It's a decent fragrance but massively overpriced.

I had two decants of Layton Exclusif which smelled really, really nice.
Like a darker Layton with a deep, sweet and almost chocolaty base - of course there wasn't any oud in it.

So I bought a full bottle from an official authorised PdM seller - and it smelled like crap. Nothing like the decants. It had a harsh medicinical opening along with heart notes, which reminded me of gauze bandages and burnt plastic. The wonderful deep and rich basenotes weren't there. All in all, that scent was trash and I wouldn't have paid 20 Euros for it.
In the German Parfumo forum, there were a few other guys, who experienced the same.

The quality production of PdM is really bad. I've bought and smelled a lot of different batches of Layton and Herod from 2017 until now and they all smelled different to each other. But I've never thought to find those problems with Layton Exclusif, too.

And just to clarify it here. I really like Parfums de Marly and I've got a lot of their perfumes.
If everything is well done, they offer exceptional scents, which combine high quality ingrediants with a mass appealing "designerish" smell.

But I would never recommend to blind buy any of their more popular scents if you can't return it to the seller and get your money back after trying it out. It's a pure game of hazard.

So maybe you got a lemon - or the scent is ok and just not for your taste.

Hmm. Seems like a batch problem possibly. That's why it's always important to buy the first batch if you like a fragrance, we are all too familiar with the bad experiences we have had with batch consistency and reformulation.

So Guys last night I tried Layton Exclusif wore it about 4- sprays on my Neckline. And my thought about it is, I actually liked it. But as somebody earlier has pointed out it did not completely blow me away but I thought it was a nice fresh, spicy scent. Good for Night Wear and Dressed up occasions. Now I would love to have it my Perfume collection, but not at the Price what PDM sells it at. So I may look out for a place till I get it at a cheaper price. But the perfume is good, but not too good for the price.

The performance was pretty strong for about 1.5-2 Hours with a projection of about half an arm's distance. After which it weakened. I would not say I enjoyed it as much as I enjoy the Memo's but nevertheless not a bad scent.

no offense, but that's a bit of a weird take. You obviously don't seem to love it, so why ask others if you should by it. Also, out of every PDM, Layton Exclusif is the one that I do find very unique and after smelling maybe 2000 fragrances, I can't think of anything similar. Nor is it fresh, it's very heavy and probably in the top 10 strongest fragrances I've owned (out of maybe 3-400).

As far as I can tell, Layton is not a clone of anything... (Edited to add: Though I can understand why people would say it's just a "designer" scent sold by a niche brand, i.e. it's a very friendly and easy to digest scent for most.) I find it enjoyable but Layton Exclusif wowed me at first sniff in a way only few perfumes do.

As seems to be the thrust of most of this thread: trust your own nose and tastes, forget about others' opinions because you're the only one that has to smell what you're wearing 24/7...

regular Layton reminded me a bit of Boss Bottled. Exclusif is way different and its own thing though
