Discussions from a chemistry perspective and how useful it is to DIY perfumery have been had on this forum for many years now. They never end well because those that do have a chemistry background invariable enjoy demonstrating their knowledge and don’t want to be stifled.

While I appreciate some of the info provided and find some discussions interesting, I don’t find much of it useful for learning perfumery, which is ultimately the purpose of this section of the forum (pay attention, Pippin06). I understand that we all have the option to not follow a thread, but a number descend into chemistry talk, especially of late. It’s next to useless for the average person looking to learn and could even serve to put off someone looking in for the first time; most just want to throw a few materials together and see what happens.

Not sure a chemistry section is the way forward, or attempting to shut down folk that like to wave their metaphorical willy.

It’s probably best to accept that the discussions are going to take place but that it’s not particularly useful to the average person. What I don’t like is condescending shit aimed at folk that question whether this is relevant to DIY perfumery. It isn’t and you can often muddy the waters of a discussion that wasn’t started with that in mind. This thread, however, isn’t one of those. And personally, I’ve often wondered about the order of materials being added and if it has any effect on the blend outside of Schiff's.

I haven't had any formal training in chemistry (other than first year university courses) but I find chemistry and its relevance to perfumery very interesting. This is the DIY forum and DIY can mean many things. It can range from mixing together pre-made accords to extracting and synthesising aromachemicals. This forum should be inclusive of all DIY interests. Not just "throwing together a few materials and seeing what happens".

So I should discuss upcycling a cupboard door...?

But serisouly, I didn't claim it was about throwing a few materials together, I claimed that's what folk rock up here expecting to do. But ultimately, that's exactly what we do but we take notes and learn from it.

I am inclined to agree with this subject to the proviso that using purported chemistry information as a smoke screen for arrant bullshit should be strongly discouraged...

Dunno specifically about musk R1, but for materials that form inhomogenous masses combining liquid, pasty, and solid phases within the bottle when at cooler temps, my fear is always that there is a partitioning on the basis of steroisomer forms to the different phases. So if you grab a "chunk", you may potentially be getting an ill-defined & variable ratio of stereoisomers. No idea if this is realistic tho, but I always melt first.
It’s completely realistic, and you find this approach specifically in the medical field with complex medical formulas! is best what your doing..

Maybe there should be a sub-forum for Chemistry here 🤣

A lot of this discussion goes over my head, TBH.

But Hey, what do I know? Obviously, not much 🤣

All I want to do is make a pretty smelling perfume/cologne and I read the forum for ideas and opinions, etc…

No disrespect to you, smart fellas 😉
Give some time and Reading things will be easier than you think, take notes of what you think is complicated and Google or Read about it, before you know things will be clearer 💪💪 is added value but not a must! gd luck

Is there an electronic copy available anywhere?

I am poor and can't afford to buy hard copies.
Copy the following into the google search, exactly:

"appel" site:thegoodscentscompany.com

There will be hundreds of links with formulas, with many repetitions, but you will be able to copy Appell’s formulas.
