notes you love that most others seem to hate on

Again, on the subject of vanilla:

I mentioned that I generally like it, but I also feel I maybe should have qualified that mostly I find I like vanilla fragrances in the winter, or in colder months period. It always seems like a "warm" scent to me..and often I feel like I don't want to use vanilla based fragrances so much in very hot weather.

I generally wear vanilla fragrances in the cooler months, it works well around the holiday season.

Regardless of whether it's warm or cold, there's quite a few individuals who dislike orientals or even gourmands.

I know I’ve seen plenty of love for mint, but it seems like everyone and their brother rags on “toothpaste” mint.

Toothpastes come in so many different flavors but I’ve never identified a mint smell that runs through them (and almost all of them are some variation on mint). I get it when people identify notes as “lemon pledge” or other specific household items, but what’s “toothpaste mint”? Maybe people just don’t like mint as a prominent note.

Even assuming there is a singular “toothpaste mint” smell, I don’t understand why it gets the hate. I’ll take mint in about any form, toothpaste included.

Also seconding (if already mentioned, if not posted so far) and/or also adding rhubarb, coffee, additional animalic notes, cannabis, coca leaf, aloe, cumin, "resinous/balmy barbershop" and/or osmanthus among further notes with merely quite conditional, case to case based limited popularity

In men’s fragrances, iris seems to often be a polarizing scent, due to its association with women’s cosmetics, the “lipstick” or “lady’s handbag” vibe. But I love it and the richness it brings to the overall composition of a scent.

And patchouli. Patchouli gets a lot of hate as a hippie, headshop fragrance. But done right, it’s incredible—even regal.

Notes I like that Basenotes hates: white musk, calone, pink pepper.

Notes I love that the general population seems to hate: fecal/indolic notes, civet, castoreum, or any animalic notes.

I actually find the smell of "toothpaste mint" nauseating. It seems to be a blend of primarily spearmint and some other flavours. Different brands use different blends, of course, and I try to choose those that use more peppermint or menthol.
