notes you love that most others seem to hate on

I feel like it's sort of weird to include these, because they're such traditional notes in women's perfumes, but lily-of-the valley and rose, seriously. (Yes, I've noticed there are a good number of people who seem to hate both..or..at least in the case of rose anyway, they just think it's old lady-ish.) In all fairness, in the case of rose it totally depends on how it's done, I've come across rose scents that I love and ones I care for a lot less. In the case of lily-of-the-valley I find I usually love it, but I've come across lots of people who seem like they can't stand it!
Others are also:

almost all white florals. I find I usually like jasmine, gardenia, tuberose, orange blossom, neroli, etc. (Again, with jasmine, sometimes it depends how it's done though, like with rose.) I've come across some others who comment on things like "indole" though. (Which I'll come back to in just a bit!) Generally, I find white floral perfumes one of the nicest smelling things though!
Also, I like floral aldehydes like Chanel No. 5! I used to know some people who complained that one was just awful when I used to wear it! Apparently, aldehydes commonly bother a lot of people. I think they're fine! (Actually..I kind of like them..they make me think of dish soap!) And yeah..some people might say that things like laundry detergent (neroli) or dish soap smells don't belong in classy perfume because they smell "cheap" or whatever, but I don't care! lol Sorry, not to be rude or anything, that's just how I feel though!

Another one is vanilla. I generally really enjoy a lot of the ubiquitous vanilla scents that became really trendy at some point in the past couple of decades or so. I've heard some people say they hate them too..or generally anything that's "too sweet" in perfume.

Another thing I sometimes like is chypres like Mitsouko! (So yeah..generally..chypre notes like oakmoss.) Or also, woody perfumes like "Ormonde Woman" by Ormonde Jayne. Or "Bois Des Isles" by Chanel. Years back, I used to sometimes like wearing some more masculine/unisex scents like that too. Or..things like "Obsession" by Calvin Klein for women which has a note that's kind of like cannabis! I found, when I used to wear those, a lot of women responded really negatively! They told me a lot of things like, "you should stop wearing that!" or "that seems cold and creepy and not at all warm!" Or..in the case of things like "Chantilly" I was just told it seemed "manly." Which..in all fairness it smells exactly like Stetson (for men) because again it was done in a more traditionally masculine style. But yeah..people seem to hate when I wear some notes that are more traditionally masculine. I have no idea why! I just thought those ones smelled good! Maybe I should stick to chypres or woody notes in candle scents?? lol

On the subject of some floral scents and "indole":

You know..I never used to know or understand what on earth people were on about when they talked about this one! Like..I mentioned that I generally like white florals right? But..I'd come across some people in the past who complained, and said they could not abide any women's perfume that was largely white floral based (so..like..a huge amount of women's perfumes!) because, to their nose, there was like...some "stinky" or "indole" smelling thing in it! And I was always just like.."..what??"

But, you know..I currently have some cut mini daffodils (so..narcissus, right?) in some water in a vase on my kitchen table, right? And..I love those flowers because they're just so darn cute and cheerful, right??
So, hey..you know what?? It turns out I really can't stand the actual scent of narcissus! XD (The actual real flower anyway.)
Today I was sitting near that kitchen table at one point right? And I kept thinking I could smell something that was like someone's really bad morning breath? (I'm not even kidding.) And..at one point I was even almost about to get really cranky, and tell *someone* they needed to go brush their teeth! (LOL) Luckily I didn't say anything! Later in the day, when there was no one else in my house except me (and even after I had my Nest Grapefruit candle burning for over two hours) I still kept catching a whiff of that same awful thing, and almost had to gag! Then..finally I realized what i was actually smelling! It was my cut flowers in the vase! So..previously..they hadn't smelled TOO bad. But..they've been sitting in that vase for like..what..at least a week now? Something like that? I realized their scent seems to become stronger the longer they sit there! It's almost like they become overly ripe or something like that! So..yeah..I realized today I don't care for narcissus as a note..and I recall I feel the same way about some lilies too. (It depends on the variety though.) And..I can see what some people mean about how some floral notes can kind of smell like "indole." (To me, like I said..I would describe it like the scent of bad breath..or morning breath anyway, like before people brush their teeth.) And..some people say jasmine or some white florals can be like that too..but I wonder if the proper note is actually more like narcissus or lily, and people are confusing it with jasmine? Because..I think I've kind of smelled this note in perfume too ( like the narcissus I have in my vase) and people say it's "jasmine" or "tuberose" and maybe sometimes it is..but I think it's maybe sometimes more like narcissus too, and people are confusing notes? Because..I drink green tea with jasmine right? And..it doesn't smell like that! Just saying! lol But yeah..just decided to share this because I realized today how flowers can sometimes just stink too! XD

Would no go as far as to say hate, but several notes do happen to like are not necessarily among the most popular, including:
several types of pre-IFRA/vintage style chypre components, heavier leathers, amber/musky, certain types of lavender and also of various spicy/gourmand notes

Barnyard oud and All the spices. Like literally all of them. I’d walk around smelling like a pepper if it was possible.

I want to say cannabis so bad... But I'm not sure anyone hates that smell. Ha ha!

Another cumin lover here. Doesn't smell like BO at all to me. I love it. Also somewhat controversial, Iso E Super. Not as hated as something like ambroxan, but I absolutely love it. Many of my favorite scents have lots of it (Encre Noire, TdH), and I've even bought some off Etsy to wear straight/use for layering. I've grown to like rose a lot more lately. I'm not a huge fan of musky animalic scents but I do love funky/cheesy/animalic oud. In fact I'm wearing Aoud Cuir d'Arabie right now. I love pretty much any kind of oud though. Also pepper a la Montale Greyland or Intense Pepper. I'd be happy to smell like the inside of a pepper grinder.

I love powdery notes but others often find them
suffocating.
I wore one of my favourites, Ambre Vanille,
and could tell a female friend found it a bit too much
(she was coughing and looking at me wierdly.)
Men seem to love it though!
I also love fig, which seems to be a bit of a polarising note.

Not sure if I'd like it if it featured prominantly in a perfume but I smell it daily and it's certainly a less annoying smell than that of cigarettes or curry, I'll give it that.

I do. Smells like rhino sweat. I don’t want to be anywhere near it.

HAHA, Rhino sweat, that's a good one! I have heard a bunch of analogies, but first time hearing that. And I can totally hear you, some times I smell it and I am like, that is putrid. Living in the Bay Area it is something you just deal with though, it is everywhere.

Not sure ive ever smelled a fragrance with a realistic cannabis note. Ive heard black afgano does and I love that frag, but it doesnt smell like any weed ive ever smelled. I also have a few different "cannabis" candles that dont smell one bit like weed...

As someone involved in horticulture, I'm still entranced by the "dirt" note. A note that never seems to have caught on.

There's a lot of individuals who dislike vanilla based fragrances. Personally it's one of my favorite notes.

I do and I don’t, with qualifications. Something that smells like a freshly sliced vanilla pod and is nicely balanced will probably win me over.

Something that goes gooey beast mode nuclear custard will need to be thrown down the stairs.

I don’t have any real skanky animalic stuff in my collection yet, but the more I sniff it, the more I like it. Same with cumin and indolic Jasmine.

Also geranium copped a bit of a bashing in that other thread and I really like it.

Again, on the subject of vanilla:

I mentioned that I generally like it, but I also feel I maybe should have qualified that mostly I find I like vanilla fragrances in the winter, or in colder months period. It always seems like a "warm" scent to me..and often I feel like I don't want to use vanilla based fragrances so much in very hot weather.
