I was watching JJ’s amazing live stream last night that had Super Dacob (and other guests), and Dacob was saying the newest formulation of Egoiste is incredible, that it has some dark smokey thing going on!

Has anyone had a chance to smell this?
I‘m very much looking forward to getting my nose on it. “Dark & smokey Egoiste“ sounds amazing

I tried what out there in late January and it smelled like the same wonderful Egoiste i know it to be, so if there has been a change, then it must be very recent.

Considering who said it I just assumed it was overstated nonsense.
I mean...one of the reasons I never pay any attention to influencers is because I know I can't trust them. They're not ever going to be completely honest about any fragrances because doing so might mean ending up on the bad side of the people and companies that they're using for freebies.

Plus, especially when it comes to perfume--something subjective and personal and influenced by our personal experiences--why would I really trust anyone other than myself?

I've done side by side tests between my 2021 bottle and vintage juice, and they're both great but very different. I wouldn't describe either as dark or particularly smoky, but there is a faint tobacco note in the base - you occasionally see people describe it as an "ashtray" note, and I've picked up on that fleetingly in the dry down, but it's not particularly strong. Here's my review from last year that compares both in depth:

My understanding was that deep vintage is the magical stuff (and that's my experience with it); middle vintage supposedly got pretty bad at some point in the early 2000s; and the current juice is supposedly much better than it was (I like it a lot). Admittedly, I've only tried vintage and 2021; no experience with the middle era, and not sure if there's been a newer formulation.

Yeah, that Dacob guy definitely seems like more of an influencer than someone whose nose I would trust to me, if it was someone like JJ or Derek I'd probably take a lot more notice.

I think I have the same Egoiste formulation as @Toxicon, so I might compare it with my vintage mini later, but "dark and smoky" is a bit vague, really. I mean, one could say that rosewood already smells a little smoky and Egoiste is generally a dark fragrance!

As for JJ's YouTube channel, probably my favourite new fragrance channel in years, the overall quality of the content has been fantastic!

May I suggest checking out, "The Scentinel" on Youtube. Pep doesn't accept freebies, and is the most honest, unbiased fragrance reviewer I've seen. He's also quite cerebral--a pleasure to listen too.

The more I wear the current version, the more I adore it. Have no interest in chasing down vintage Egoiste. The performance is outstanding with the current version, btw.

Who's JJ? I dont think i will ever like Egoist. Even if it get's reformulated😄
JJ Colbourne (you may have seen his reviews on here as Colbourne, or on Fragrantica as Alphairone). His youtube channel is really wonderful - he does some occasional traditional fragrance content (lists centered on notes or themes, comparisons of vintage and current formulations), but his livestream roundtable conversations are unbelievably great. Lots of guest appearances from familiar basenoters, too.

Thanks, but no. I really have no interest in watching or listening to videos about perfume. It's just not something I find appealing in any way.

I have to say I agree with you. Funnily enough, anytime I click on something to hopefully read an article, and then find out it's a video, I almost always leave the site. I really hate video articles or news clips. It's probably because I'm 55.

I'm the same. If someone sends me a video to watch or I click through a headline and there's a video for me to watch, I never ever ever watch the videos. I don't have any need to watch and/or listen to someone tell me a story. That's a waste of my time. I want the information; I don't care for so much of the personality. I can get the same information much more quickly if I can read it as a story than if I have to sit through a video.

Tending to believe there could be a new dimension to the latest Egöiste. It does seem to be a fairly tinkered with formula.

I'd be interested to sample when the opportunity presents especially as I've decided not to replace my current (2010s?) version. Yet, some minor tinkering with the formula could have me back in the game!

With all due respect, I couldn’t disagree more. He‘s extremely passionate about Chanel, but he will be the first person to call them out.
He has many videos absolutely crucifying them for things like reformulations, price hikes, downgrades in the quality of their textiles, fragrances, packaging, etc.

I gotta say, I’m surprised at all the negative comments about him in this thread. He’s a huge fragrance advocate, extremely knowledgeable and uses his platform to call out the bullshit the brands and fragrance houses pull.

The next time I visit the Chanel Boutique, I might look into this.
I will too. Hopefully they‘ll have a tester with the newest version. Otherwise I might just blind buy one. The thought of Egoiste getting a darker, smokier reformulation is enough to make me pull out my wallet and pay retail.
