Mousse Illuminee is to Moss as ????????? is to Fern.

I have found no more accurate, close-to-linear, long-lasting, current production nor reasonably priced expression of moss (of all types) than Mousse Illuminee. Of course, this is open to personal preference. Comment here is certainly welcomed.

Is there a masculine or unisex fern equivalent?

Have you sampled this one?

Try Trumper's Eucris EDP. Stunning quality for the money and wipes the floor with MI to my nose, it's treemoss I think. Would also recommend Fougere L'Aube, probably the best composition from the house along with Chypre Siam. (from the ones that I've tried)

Hmm... this is no doubt a great fougere, but there's plenty of other stuff going on, including a prominent costus note. For a more traditional, 'soliflore' fern, I would try Penhaligon's English Fern.
(Like MI a lot)..... This was going to be my suggestion too. Not sure if it's discod or just rare but it is not easy to find and price has gone up. But, it can still be found for 1/4 or an 1/8 the price of a Roja, so it just depends on your budget if it's really worth considering. It has a similarity to MI in that it kind of whacks you once when you spray it, a very sharp opening....

Yes you're right @woodnotes55, discontinued, rarish and typically rather pricy nowadays, but samples often pop up on eBay so it can always be tried first before purchasing a FB. A different take on the traditional fern accord and far more affordable is Trumper's Wild Fern Cologne. I think the problem with both is that the same notes have been repeatedly combined in vastly inferior products in the 20th century, so it's really a case of going with the one that has the 'least naff' psychological associations for you! 😁
