AUPHORIE.jpeg

Sumiiro No Miyako (lit. ink-colored Miyako) turns our original award-winning Miyako into a piece of traditional sumi-e ink painting. Conventionally, pine wood is burnt and its soot is collected to make into inksticks which are used extensively in traditional East-Asian calligraphy and paintings. In Sumiiro No Miyako, splashes of ink are artistically painted over an underlying layer of yuzu, golden osmanthus and leather as portrayed in the original Miyako. Further travelled to the heart of Heian-kyo, a traditional incense once flourished during the Heian period known as Kurobou incense begins to embrace the original Miyako, restoring the aesthetics that once belonged to this part of the civilization.

Kurobou incense is well-known for its appearance in the Tale of Genji where Princess Asagao made this kneaded incense and presented to Prince Genji as a gift for his daughter’s initiation ceremony at his request. Made from a blend of rare, valuable ingredients, namely agarwood, sandalwood, musk, spices and resins, Kurobou incense, when heated over a censer, gives forth a bold, cool and elegant scent that fittingly portrays the character of Princess Asagao. As depicted in the Scenes from the Tale of Genji, the Kurobou incense was presented to Prince Genji in a canister adorned with a sprig of pine. Later during an incense judging session, the Kurobou incense made by Princess Asagao eventually won the hearts of Prince Genji and Prince Hotaru, and was reckoned to be the best of its kind. Besides being known for her art in making incense, Princess Asagao’s ink calligraphy was unmistakably one of the best. Prince Genji, who had been exchanging letters with Princess Asagao, cherished her beautifully written manuscripts so much so that he was too reluctant to show her inkworks to others.

Taking inspirations from the aforementioned tale, notes of pine-soot ink and Kurobou incense are incorporated into the composition to add a dark, mysterious and bold touch while lending the composition an authentic East-Asian accent. As the strokes of brush continue, a secluded and poetic moss garden begins to emerge on the painting silk, enriching the overall composition while bringing this ink-splashed saga to a nostalgic and wistful coda.

AL SHAREEF.jpeg

We live in an era where few people value handcrafted goods. We have been conditioned to purchase cheap products made in haste that swiftly find their way to the bin. Much of everything produced is of mediocre quality, ready for the dustbin after a few uses - this throw-away culture has become the norm and no genre of products have been spared.

Certain items are not merely disposable and should not be made cheaply or in haste. These items possess intrinsic, sentimental values so profound that they transcend the unfortunate consumer patterns that much of the world has adopted; Fragrance is one of those. Hastily concocted fragrances that are pumped out on a weekly basis cannot be trusted to provide the olfactory companionship needed in your life journey. Fragrances accompany us in the most intimate moments of our journey; the good, the bad and even times of celebration and mourning. As such they need to have the quality of character and resilience, the ability to support. carry and aiding us in the retention of the deepest of our memoirs.

From the Arabic word for rise ISHRAAQ pays tribute to the many nuances and shades of wild that resonate within the core of our existence. As humans our souls are silently connected to the wild around us; the chirping of birds, the song of crickets and the jagged splashes of waves crashing against the shore line…The wilderness is an orchestra our soul is intrinsically tuned to; its crescendo pure and freeing. ISHRAAQ celebrates nature's wild ingredients utilising age old methods in a manner not experienced in modern times…giving rise to an exhilarating olfactory experience.

ISHRAAQ is a creation that brings to the modern world a perfume experience found in the compositions and styles of the courts of the Sultans and Amirs in the golden age of the Islamic Empire. Each Amir had several perfumers competing to produce the best of fragrances with no budget restrictions. Multiple talented pupils were at their service to grind, pound, filter, macerate and prepare whatever the master perfumer required. This race for excellence meant history's most exquisite fragrances came from these perfumers, the likes of Al Ghaliyah which perfumers still try to mimic today.

ISHRAAQ was composed on the foundation of this heritage. Utilising the finest of natural wild ingredients, from animalic to florals and woods to resins, no money was spared. The aim was to produce a fragrance forming the crown jewel of any perfume lover's collection, one that will embrace, engage, and be your companion and turn-to fragrance on every important occasion.

With every single ingredient prepared in the precise Al Shareef methodology, each component is elevated to a complex state of sophistication with multiple dimensions to provide the ultimate olfactory indulgence. Ishraaq rises to the occasion every time.

ISHRAAQ opens with regal wafts of middle eastern incense wrapped in Cuban sheets of cigar. Sprinkled with the spices of the east; cardamom, cinnamon, saffron and clove. It is carried forward like a silver feather on a soft breeze of animalic musk and frankincense. It wraps its warm myrrh arms around you in a close embrace and you then notice the Oudh and woods, what a sophisticated embrace! You are revisited by musk and touches of rose and ylang ylang deepening into a sensual whisper of musk and ambergris before settling into a luxury bed of Oudh and spice.

ISHRAAQ is your companion, your friend, your support, you can trust Ishraaq will rise to the occasion every time.

Perfume : Jasmine
House : Al Shareef Oudh
Released : 2021

Top: Jasmine Florasol, Jasmine Absolute
Middle: Musk, Saffron, Orris Root
Base: Sandalwood, Leather

https://www.alshareefoudh.com/product/jasmine/

SHAREEF.jpeg

Ghazipur in India is considered to be the original habitat of the Jasmine flower consisting of approximately 42 species with their varying olfactory characteristics. In Europe, Grasse in France is also world famous for Jasmine. It was first cultivated there as a gift from the Middle East to the French in 1548.

Our JASMINE is a classical rendition of the sensual Jasmine flower. Bringing the very experience of a true Attar which has been cooked utilising traditional alchemy to life in a parfum, Jasmine follows our unique attar composition methodology. A true ‘attar is never a mere compendium of differing ingredients carried out on a perfumers bench top. Traditionally, the ‘Attaar (Arabic term for perfumer) would distil and fashion their attars by co-distilling ingredients with a sandalwood base in special pots called deghs to produce a seamless fusion of harmonised notes. In lieu of large traditional deghs we utilised glass apparatus to mimic the complexity of attars with added projection and transition offered by the parfum format.

The sandalwood base is an essential part of attar-making and traditionally Mysore has been the go-to source. As alcohol is not used in traditional Arabic perfumery the process of utilising sandalwood as a medium allows for ingredients such as ambergris and musk to better fuse with other ingredients, Sandalwood oil too = works as a brilliant carrier that imparts a lovely woody end-note. Today the term attar is used more broadly to mean a Middle eastern or subcontinental fragrance composed of fragrant oils.

…And so loading the perfumers’ pot began: Mysore sandalwood, Siberian Musk, Iranian Zargol, Saffron and Jasmine to name a few of the key ingredients were cooked slowly at 70-90C to ensure the delicate notes of jasmine and saffron were undamaged.

For the Jasmine lovers, this is undoubtedly your calling; the Jasmine fragrance of Yesteryear. Opening with a gorgeously balanced jasmine note that has the slightest touch of dirty like the classics of the jasmine genre, the tune of jasmine dances into a powdery, musky Italian cedar. The middle and top notes of this attar are an absolute joy. Enchanting and inviting with musk and saffron as the stars. The parfum settles down to a sandalwood, leather and pine wood base layered with a patchouli and vetiver mist.

Brioni Eau de Parfum
Century Blue
Explorer Ultra Blue
Freewave for Him
Joop! Homme Eau de Parfum
Light Blue Forever
Light Blue Forever pour Homme
On the Beach

I'm going to continue to try and add a few fragrances from this thread every day - however, for the time being at least, the quickest way to get the fragrances in the directory will be this link here - as I'll be adding anything new added on there as a priority (mainly as I can add ten fragrances in the time that it takes me to manually add one)

Thanks for your patience

Perfume : Ward
House : Al Shareef Oudh
Released : 2021

Top: Bulgarian Rose, Patchouli
Middle: Oriental Amber Resin, Shamaamah, Saffron
Base: Musk, Sandalwood

New Note.jpg

WARD is the Arabic word for Rose. Our Ward Parfum is a vibrant celebration of a rich legacy – Bulgarian and Taifi rose infused into Mysore Sandalwood with musk, oriental Amber resin, Shamaamah, Patchouli, Saffron and Spice all aged for months to craft the most sensual and mesmerising Rose Parfum you will ever lay your nose on.

Rose attars have always held a unique place in the tradition of Middle Eastern perfumery. Right from the Ummayad period, rose was utilised by both men and women of the court in the form of a rose butter and this continued all the way to the Ottomans. The Ottomans however, took the application of rose to a whole new level; they advanced and developed the formulation of rose attars to perfume royal courts, Mosques and even the Holy Ka’bah in Mecca. The very formula used currently to scent the Holy Sanctuary originated with the Ottomans.

At first whiff of Ward Parfum you begin to appreciate why royalty indulged in Rose Oil throughout the annals of History. Ward is our salute to this wonderful, timeless ingredient, the jewel of every garden – the magnificent rose.

WARD opens with a burst of green rose – a little of this parfum goes a long way with a huge projection. Followed closely by the citrus and crisp tops of the Taifi and Bulgarian rose, the middle of Ward is musky and powdery with the feel of a classic fragrance. Patchouli, saffron and spices play a sensual summer evening song in dulcet harmony.

The base of Ward settles to a lovely spicy Mysore note which is not monotonous but rather playful and lively.
Possessing a smokey, incense accord of rose which is not blossomy. WARD is an elegant expression of rose hinting of royal luxuries and the courts of Sultans. If I did not tell you it was rose you would not have even known, WARD has a level of sophistication that engages you, tugging at your heart strings to make you dance in joy.

If I could make a request:

Grant: could you prioritize getting missing houses into the directory? It goes without saying that we appreciate your efforts to make the site better. I’d like to help share the load by submitting fragrances via the tool you linked.

Everyone else: if you really want to see the directory completed, use the tool Grant linked.

Excellent! This will really speed things up! Basically, we do the typing and the research.

The link again:

https://www.basenotes.net/contribute.php

You basically fill out the stuff that goes onto the web page. You can provide web links and additional notes to help Grant.

If it's from a new HOUSE, it still needs to be added in this thread, but once THAT fragrance is added, more from the same house can be added rapidly by us through the contribute page.

Would be great to be able to see the list of fragrances added via the link to avoid doubling or tripling up etc especially on the major releases. At that point it will be all hands in deck I think, as we all want a great directory

Just to clarify, are we ONLY to use the link Grant provided and not post in here anymore?

If I read his post correctly, he's still going to try to add a few from this thread every day, but scents added via the web page will be added faster.

Also, new houses (or houses not in the Directory) have to be added in this thread!

Absinthe Minded by Anka Kus

I couldn't add by the form, as the house, Anka Kus wasn't listed and it won't let you add a house that isn't already in the drop down menu.

d'oh! fixed

Added Y Le Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent (2021) and Ferragamo Intense Leather (2021) via form.

Thank you for getting the other ones in there so fast. <3

This rounds out all my missing new releases minus the Signature version of Tom Ford Beau de Jour (2020), but I got the hint that one wasn't different enough from the 2019 private blend to be added (even though Signature versions of Ombré Leather and Costa Azzura were deemed different enough to add, which personally makes so sense to me as they are just mostly formula-tweaked repackages too just like Beau de Jour). Just my 2 cents on that one.

The two fragrances in bold were added via form and await approval, in case my spiel about Beau de Jour caused confusion.
