Gabel's Bay Rum (not in the directory but wish it was)

I considered a no-shave day and Clive Christian 1872, but when I woke up I just had a hankering for cleaning myself up again today with a proper shave and an old fashioned classic bay rum aftershave. Gabels is really nice. Sometimes the cheap $10 barbershop bay rum aftershave just wins over the high level niche fragrance. It happens.

I wish L'Ombre Dans L'Eau didn't turn sour on my skin because off of paper this smells really good. It just didn't work on my skin. And that pains me because I would have owned this. It's a 5-star scent off of paper, but off my skin it's not good. It's one of the fragrances where skin chemistry is a thing.

I think that's not uncommon with blackcurrant. It's a very, very fickle ingredient, and can often get pissy or sour. Luckily, it just stays intensely green and bitter on me.

A cold, rainy, dreary Sunday. Grey skies contrasted by the vibrant, lush green new growth of spring.
Heading to a small, dark, candlelight Italian restaurant for dinner.

Gucci Nobile seemed like the perfect choice and was in my head all day, but upon smelling numerous options…
French Lover was the perfect fit.

"Battle testing" these, head to head, as possible beach scents. They are actually very similar, both being watery, woody, bordering on gourmand fragrances. Coccobello is a green-coconut-gardenia drying down to benzoin and sandalwood. Infusion d'Ylang is a bergamot-Ylang-cardamom drying down to benzoin and sandalwood.

I prefer the Coccobello, which has more nuance (and higher quality) and therefore more possible year-round uses. The Infusion d'Ylang is beautiful, but I think it could just as well be called "Infusion de Cardamom." Infusion has better projection - which is crucial on the beach where the wind is high. But as they are both the same price currently ($180), I'd have to pick the Coccobello. I wouldn't mind having both if I could grab the Prada on discount.

Man, this is such a delight.

It starts out very green and fresh, but then turns too spicy, powdery, and even a little crude, and I regret it. Then...it settles and smoothes out, and it's this lovely dapper gentleman/dandy scent that's both powder soft and stiletto sharp. In the air it's got this classic, powdery perfumey vibe that skews femme, but when you put your nose to skin it's more masculine.

This is truly one of the all-time greats imo, and I can't believe how well-made it continues to be, even in reformulation and even at $15. This is the gem in my collection that I continue to forget about and overlook. A fantastic cold weather scent.
