I’m a beginner “enthusiast.” My favorite vanilla by far is vanilla absolute. It’s more complex and beautiful to me than most vanilla perfumes or just vanillin alone. The issue is both Co2 and the absolute have poor longevity on me. The note profile however is beautiful and I am wondering if there’s an accord of both naturals and synthetics to make a vanilla absolute perfume? I’d simply wear the absolute but due to the chemical makeup it appears to not last. I know there’s a lot to perfumery and it’s complex so I’m wondering if any of you have any recommendations for perfumes that smell like actual vanilla absolute (dark, boozy) or if there’s a way to make this last longer. Thank you.

I also love Vanilla absolute and I use it in very small amounts because of its price. I agree, it is such beautiful and complete smell but it dosen't last too long. There's many complex aspects to vanilla abs. (dark, phenolic, spicy/sweet) so I'm not claiming I can reproduce it accurately, but I use things to extend the note. Benzoin Siam, Phenylacetic acid, Clovebud absolute, Veratraldehyde, Ultravanil (Givaudan)

I like what Solua B says above.
My Vanilla Absolute replacer at PSH starts with vanilla beans, makes a tincture, then gets reinforced with single molecules. It's the most reasonably priced and realistic substitute I am aware of. It ends up being equivalent to roughly about a 45% alcohol dilution of absolute. I'd start there, there add molecules like what Solua B mentions.

Thank you for this info and listing what you use. Would you be interested in selling 3-5ml of what you make with those? I understand if not but thought I would ask. Otherwise, I’ll buy the materials when I can so I can try to make something with them. This is mainly for myself purposes since I want to wear it as a perfume.

I actually have gotten your replacer before and I absolutely loved the aroma. I mixed it in a solid perfume (fractionated coconut oil and beeswax) and it smells fantastic but since I don’t have the other needed components for longevity it doesn’t last as long as I’d like. It’s a beautiful material by itself, though. I just have to get the smell of an absolute overall with other things so I can get something with tenacity on skin. I would wear it as an everyday perfume if I could get it to last. I even just pick it up to sniff it so I can get some GABA (lol).

If I had to art direct a Vanilla absolute scent based upon my replacer, I would take some of those suggestions from Solua above, and would add these to it:
Myrrh resinoid, Cinnamyl Cinnamate, Ethyl Cinnamate, Cinnamyl Benzoate, Galaxolide 50% and Velvione, a touch of muscenone, a touch of labdanum, and blend those with the Vanilla replacer to make a long lasting vanilla type scent.

I remember i readed some positive reviews about cinnamyl cinnamate. Curious about it. Does it has something related to methyl cinnamate odor or very different?

Hey Paul, are the molecules you add to your tincture originating from “natural” sources?

No, it was never intended to be an all natural product.
Of the 28 lines to the formula of additions, there is one essential oil, and of the remaining 27 lines, maybe 10-12 of those could likely be sourced as a natural... But I did not elect to have "Natural" as a parameter, only to be an odor match replacer.

Note: The "Natural" replacers that I *had found and tried, before I made this, relied upon very large doses of vanilla resinoid, which was why I completely rejected them, as a poor quality and poor odor replacer, and propelled me to make my own replacer instead.

Ok thanks. I’m on the hunt for a high quality “natural” vanilla. I am sure your base is very nice.
I just received 2lbs of Madagascar Bourbon Grade-A Gourmet Vanilla Beans from spice land so future tincturing is in the cards.🙂

Ylang Ylang (maybe a low grade) have a facet of natural vanilla, and might be used to extend the scent and longevity of a vanilla absolute. Give it a try.
