The two I love are Chanel No.19 Poudre and Naomi Goodsir's Iris Cendre. What else should I try?

TDC Sel de Vétiver is a nice iris under the mineral and aquatic notes. I tend to like that level of iris - more than subtle, maybe centric, less than prominent. If prominent, I like clarity. I have No. 19 Poudré, and that's just a bit too girly for me. I love all the Prada iris scents, including Infusion d'Iris. The new Gentleman by Givenchy (EdT) is a nice iris under the other floral and fougère features.

And of course the original Dior Homme. Great scent.

L'Artisan's Iris Pallida is great if you can find it!

Some of my favorites with descriptors:

Airy and powdery: Chanel La Pausa
Darker and Woody: Heeley Iris de Nuit
Dense and Leathery: Chanel Cuir de Russie
Creamy: Gucci Tears of Iris

These are all fairly expensive, I'd say the best iris in the 100-150 range is any version of Chanel No. 19 or Dior Homme (original) EDT

hiris - so fresh wish it lasted longer

Chanel no. 19 (vintage parfum is glorious)

opus v super unique take on iris or anything really


the Heeley smells more of candied violets than iris to my nose & am not a huge fan

This is interesting! It’s been showing up as unavailable on the European site for some time so I assumed that’s it. Also I think I read on some blog that it’s gone (Persolaise? Don’t remember who). Well thanks for the good news!

Dior Homme Original is beautiful on my wife, no need to track down the first formulation (even though it is as great as they say).

I just had a sniff of the new Bois d’Argent by Francis Kurkdjian (Menardo formulation?) and really like it. I prefer it to Demachy’ butch take. If you go for this one, I’d recomment to make sure you get the new one.

Many great options are already here: Aedes, Lutens, Heeley etc.

I’ll add La Pausa by Chanel, yum.

Panthea Iris by Stéphane Humbert Lucas — have heard great praise though I’m not sure on availability.

Francesca Bianchi's Black Knight and Lover's tale has Orris Butter/Iris but I have not been to find it
Dusita Splendiris - longevity is not the best and it does not get a ton of mention, but I like it a ton.
Hedonist Iris by Victorya Minya. Stay away from absolu version thou, that one is horrible
Prada Infusion d'Iris and Purple Rain. The two are fairly close, but Purple Rain is like 3X the price of Infusion d'Iris

Several lovely suggestions in this thread!
I love iris/orris, but iris fragrances tend to be hit or miss for me, for sometimes inexplicable reasons. (I don't like the carrot smell, for example, if it's too prominent, or combinations with too much violet. Other times, something I should love just doesn't work for me.) I'll add these that I think are worth a try, even if I didn't love all of them myself. Various ways with iris:
- Dusita - Splendiris
- Histoires de parfums - Tubereuse 1 capricieuse
- HdP - 1905 Madame Butterfly
- Bulgari - Eau parfumée au thé bleu
- Teo Cabanel - Oh là là
- Anatole Lebreton - Incarnata
- Chanel - Misia
- Edited: I forgot to add Nuée bleue, Tanagra and perhaps Pourpre d'automne from Maison Violet.

Thank you everyone for the fantastic suggestions! I hope the samples I ordered will arrive soon, and I will keep you posted about impressions in case someone is interested in this iris quest of mine.

So far this is the situation:
• Iris Cendre/ Naomi Goodsir - ordered another sample, because mine is a dabber. Seriously considering FB.
• Amouage Opus V - have a sample, but will retest
• Lutens Iris Silver Mist - Found a used bell jar for sale. Yes? No? What say you sage Basenotes residents?

Samples I just ordered:
• ELDO She Was An Anomaly - just curious
• Pierre Guillaume Iris Oriental - liked the sound of it
• Pierre Guillaume Naiviris
• Laboratorio Olfattivo Daimiris - had a sample before and loved it, need to try again

Great thread. Cant say I’ve experienced a lot of Iris, many tho are already named. One I don’t see which I do quite enjoy, maybe not considered interesting, is Prada L’Homme.

If you are testing in store, you will find no iris in Dior Homme 2020. Dior Homme Original, marked as such, would be the closest to the original Dior Homme silver stemmed masterpiece from 2005, currently available in stores today.

All of the big ones have been mentioned already. In my opinion, the three best soliflores are Iris Silver Mist, 28 La Pausa, and Irissoir. The Xerjoff Iris is a pretty good dupe of ISM but not quite as good.

Of the Iris-plus-something-else fragrances, my top two are Apres L’Ondee (violets) and Iris Nazarena (smoke).

Also, special shout to the Malle Iris Hand Cream which may smell better than all of them but only if your nose is buried in your hand.

If anyone knows any of the other artisanal Iris scents I would love to hear about them (never heard of Jacky by HJ, thanks!). All of the ones I’ve tried (except for Sultan Pasha’s fragrances and Rising Mysore 3) seem to bury the Iris. Can’t ever find it in the Ensar Iris fragrances, and Elixir Attars Iris Chypre, while wonderful, should be called Jasmine Chypre if it were honestly named.

My bottle is from 2018. My brother has a bottle from 2011. I detect an additional unctuosity in the old version, which I love.
Does the current version have that unctuosity/creaminess?
