i never liked animalic scents (i like leather tho) and never plan to like but i really wanna try non animalic ouds for their "grey" type of neutral smell.

which frags (no ultra niche indie artisan brands please) does the justice to non animalic ouds?

thanks. what about initio oud for greatness?
It's been awhile since I tried that one but it's not a very intense or animalic oud.

I'm no expert on ouds, but every time I try a scent that is supposed to have real oud, I'm put off. I haven't tried all that many.

Oud for Greatness strikes me as probably in line with your "grey" oud classification. It is not animalic.

I just wrote a review for Guerlain's Cherry Oud and I realized that I didn't really have a very strong understanding of oud. So thanks for this thread, I will be giving some of those fragrances a try too.

Historically, is oud more of a masculine note?

best synthetic representation would be Oud Palao Dyptique.
Can find splits, available at boutiques.

Natural oud thats not animalic would be Dixit and Zak Ghaliyah Hind. I believe it is still available at luckyscent and at Strifeknot. Some oud stars by xerjoff are good: mamluk, Ceylon for example.

Depends very much on the respective oud and even more so how it relates to your taste.
But would also add Louis Varel Extreme Oud, Boss Bottled Oud, Habit Rouge EDP, Pierre Cardin Cuir Intense, Pino Silvestre Oud Absolute, Zara Oud to a possible (re) testing list likely suiting any budget.

Oud, meet underground. Underground, this is oud. Why don’t I get you a drink so you can sit down and chat, get to know each other. Sit over there, as far away from me as possible, in fact I think I’ll leave now, because, sorry oud, you STINK.

My favorite non-animalic/non-dirty ouds include:

Montale Honey Aoud
Amouage Epic Man
Mancera Aoud Vanille
The Different Company Oud for Love
Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood
Guerlain Rose Nacrée du Désert

I'd mention Roja Dove Amber Aoud, as well, but I think that one probably falls into the "ultra niche indie artisan brands" category that you are not interested in :)

I didn’t say oud smelled animalic, I said it stinks, as in, it’s unpleasant. Although, yes, unwashed body odour type smell is something I get from oud, (does that count as animalic?). I get a similar stink from guaiac wood.

As The Perfume Society says of guaiac wood, ‘it’s not as down-and-dirty as agarwood (oud)’, but if I think guaiac wood smells bad, you can imagine how oud smells to me. Remember, everyone’s sense of smell is different. To me, oud stinks. If you could please give me some examples of these mythical pleasant smelling ouds, I’ll try and sample them. I don’t expect to be converted.

Also, perfumes people say are animalic, like Serge Lutens Musc Kublai khan and Malle’s Musc Ravageur aren’t at all to me.

As Idiva.com says, ‘oud is fabled as a healing, magical oil, yet to many it smells nasty’.

i hate animalic stuff. (except leather and other similar notes) musc = unnecessary dirtyness.

I was going to suggest this with a caveat. I’ve never smelled OFG, but… I recently picked up Haltane from Parfums de Marly which a lot of people compare to OFG.

I’m really enjoying Haltane, and I’m fairly new to oud scents so this is me easing into it safely. To my nose, I don’t get any odd/weird/bad notes from opening to dry down.

Lets hear more about the 'many more profiles' of oud then!
Honestly, I wouldn't put it past a company to say their fragrance has oud in it just because it's fashionable. Or perhaps put the tiniest amount in (as I appear super sensitive to it that's probably still too much). Or they use a synthetic oud, and not wanting to go anywhere near oud, natural or synthetic, I can't say how good synthetics are. In my experience, synthetics rarely capture the nuances of a natural, but fortunately modern fragrances have so many notes a synthetic usually doesn't stand out unless its overdosed or a particularly badly composed fragrance.

Sure most company’s rarely use oud or use trace amounts and then the rest synthetic to say there using real oud and don’t venture past the generic sweet wood or animal bomb profile ppl assume all ouds smell like.

With the pure oils I have the profiles can range from

Cola with cinemon and honey
Green mangos and sea breeze
Tea ,nuts and chai spice
There are many other profiles oud can take and usually those richer in profile tend to be more pricy
but the “all real oud is animalic or just woody” is very much incorrect

Pardon the grammar

Ok, but that’s not helpful to me. Which fragrances have these oud profiles you mention?

or to put it another way.

considering my violent dislike of oud, can you think of any fragrances with oud that in your opinion would not provoke my disgust?

I would start with these...

Permanent Oud
Oud for Social Phobia
Filthy Bunches of Oud
Animals Were Here
When They Smelled You They B'Oud
Tommy Bahama Maritime Oud

But seriously, I can't definitely say what oud smells like after only trying Versace Oud Noir and Lattafa Oud for Glory. I don't think either of those would put people off when used in moderation. Oud Noir to me is a generic "dark" and pleasant scent (I'm no good for notes). Oud for Glory has more character but it's neutral as opposed to challenging, as in it may not compel hugs but probably won't clear the room. It's not citrus+ambroxan+vanilla/tonka which seems to be the primary popularity formula today.
