How is Bois D’Argent by Dior?

I like it a lot. It’s a woody fragrance with a powdery honey-iris glaze. It’s soft in a billowy, powdery way but I find that it really projects and gets out there. Lasts forever too. It’s a really nice fragrance and somewhat unique. The latest iteration is a bit stronger in terms of the woody synthetics and amount of ambroxan that’s used, but it’s still very true to the original, which might be a bit fluffier and cloud like. Still...very similar. If you like Dior Homme and Cartier L’Envol there’s a good chance you’ll like this. Worth owning, imo.

There’s a very, very similar fragrance that costs at least half the price of BdA and is also very good, and that’s Van Cleef and Arpels Bois d’Iris. If money is a factor I would certainly recommend this over it as they’re 90% identical. Bois d’Iris May even have better performance.

+1

I personally prefer Bois d'Iris, even without factoring in the price.

BdI can be found much cheaper and is indeed very similar, however, it seems that the reason that it has hit the discounters is that it has been discontinued. I own a bottle and I'm glad to have it in my collection. If memory serves, it is slightly sweeter than Bois D'Argent, and the Dior leans more towards a drier balsamic / myrrh note. But the differences are really, incredibly subtle. I don't think I could differentiate it when presented with both at a distance.

It's wonderful--one of my top three worn of the last year. It's a very soft perfume in terms of projection, so if you're the type of person who wants something loud, it's not for you. It lasts impressively long for such a soft fragrance, though, and it's very versatile.

I find it rather sweet, very powdery and not especially unisex. Not that it bothers me - just putting it out there.

Bois d'Argent's projection is perfect for the kind of fragrance that it is.

If you want something that everyone around you will smell and will force womens' panties to fall to the ground and that could be described as BEASTMODE in any way, then Bois d'Argent is not for you.

Bois d'Argent is the opposite of all that.

It is. And it's projection/sillage is sneaky. It really gets out there, but I think what ultravisitor means is that it doesn't get out there in a loud, heavy, or obnoxious way. It's more transparent and light, like a soft cloud, but it gets out there enough for people to notice. It was one of my more complimented fragrances actually.

I bet it is, but it doesn't push out past your personal space. As ultravisitor said, "Bois d'Argent's projection is perfect for the kind of fragrance that it is."

Bois d'Argent smells fantastic and it has a rich yet gentle welcoming sort of presence that says "Come closer" instead of being a beastmode fragrance that screams out to everyone in the building "I'M DESPERATE FOR YOUR ATTENTION!!! CAN'T YOU TELL HOW MUCH I NEED YOU TO NOTICE ME???"

If you need attention, Bois d'Argent probably isn't what you're looking for.

If you're a confident guy who enjoys smelling fantastic, Bois d'Argent is a winner.

Hows the longevity

My personal favorite from the Privee/Maison line. It's head and shoulders above all the rest in terms of originality, although in terms of execution, there are some which are quite a bit better.

Nonetheless, the composition is extremely well done and it has a very interesting airy and somewhat dry effect. By comparison, BdI by VCA feels a bit warmer and more full bodied. They are both amazing compositions. Highly recommended.

I love Bois d'Argent. Certainly one of my favorites from that line. It smells very ethereal to me. Longevity is great, but it is never obnoxious in terms of projection.

Ethereal is such a good word for it.

Bois d'Argent is such a unique scent. It's airy and even billowy, but it wears close to the skin rather than projecting far out, and its longevity is outstanding. It walks straight down the unisex line, but while some unisex scents like Castile and Aqua Universalis manage to be unisex without showing any gender at all, Bois d'Argent is unisex in a way that embodies both masculinity and femininity at the same time.

It's extraordinary.

That's why I got the 250ml bottle.

Nice!

This is the sort of scent that would make an amazing signature scent for the right person - and I mean signature scent in the true sense, where it's a scent one wears daily.

The crappy part about a signature scent is that your nose will eventually get desensitized to the scent. It is almost like you're eating the same delicious dish every single day. If I want a signature, I would rather have a couple of different fragrances that give off a similar vibe so that I can rotate. Basically, other powdery iris unisex fragrances. Can't wait to try Celine's Haute Parfumerie collection. It is also creatively directed by Hedi Slimane, the same person who did Bois d'Argent.

Celinman - Yup, that's why I don't have a signature scent anymore. I enjoy variety too much, and I don't like when a scent gives me olfactory fatigue. I used to have one, up until I joined this forum back in 2012. Funny how that works! Many people in the fragrance community don't understand what the term Signature Scent means. They think it means their favorite, but that's not it at all. Signature is literally what the word implies: it's something specific people recognize you by without needing to see you, just like how the bank recognizes your handwriting signature, which is how they know your checks are legit. Yours ago, I worked with a guy who had an intern that smelled like strawberries. I could always tell if she was working that day because his office would smell like strawberries.

Bois d'Argent would make such an amazing signature scent because it's the rare combination of being versatile while also being a WOW kind of scent, but since it doesn't project much, the wow never gets in the way.

I heard that it is copied a lot in France. Tons of dupes out there because of how popular this fragrance is...also being shouted our in French rap songs helps a lot I bet. I wonder how unique smelling it is actually there. Even the brand Exemplaire seems to have made their own version of Bois d'Argent called Eau d'Initié. One of the co-founders of that brand is a big Hedi Slimane fan, and judging from how many notes are similar with Bois d'Argent it is not hard to imagine where he got inspired from.

My other half wears Bois d'Argent occasionally but otherwise I never smell it in Paris. I'm not sure it's as popular as all that.

Interesting. The other day when I was working out in the park I could’ve sworn one of the French guys blasting French rap at the pull-up bars was wearing Bois d’Argent :)

I'm not snobby about Hedi stuff, and I wouldn't mind if more people were into it so I don't have any issues with rappers rocking Bois d'Argent. The more the merrier!

I don't live in Paris, but my Parisian perfume obsessed friend says "everyone" there wears it. I did, however, during my trips to flea markets, see it being counterfeited on every other table. And my taxi driver there smelt of it- Annick Menardo in an issue of Nez , funnily enough, noticed that in a cab too and she comments of the overwhelming popularity and ubiquity of it in Paris today.

Overwhelmingly popular and ubiquitous? Some exaggeration going on there, I feel. Seriously guys, I know the smell very well and never encounter it.

Here a post a wrote about BA a long time ago

In Paris, I would advice you not to wear Dior - Bois d'Argent.

IIt used to be a great fragrance several years ago, but rappers killed it in France when they all started talking about it in their songs, basically telling that this fragrance epitomized wealth/success and that it attracted girls - which was quite true at this time. As a result, many people, especially in the lower class, who are not into fragrances and only know designer brands (Dior, D&G, Chanel, Paco Rabanne, etc.) saved money and started buying it. This one appeared as a niche and exclusive product. Because it was more expensive and also because it was sold only in Dior boutiques (and not in multi brand retailer stores). Thus, people who were usually wearing One Million, Sauvage or Acqua di Gio before started wearing it. Sales for this product have skyrocketed, far beyond Dior's expectations as i believe it never aimed at targeting this kind of customers. It has become so common now, literally everyone is wearing it (and not necessarily the kind of people you'd like to be associated to) or at least knows its smell here in Paris.

It's so cliché now that it became unwearable.

My English was not perfect at this time (it still isn't), so i'm not sure my comment is really clear.

Now, the trend has quite faded but few years ago it was quite unbearable. So many people were wearing it (or should i say over-applying it), especially in bars and nightclubs. Many were considering BA as an upscale version of Dior - DHI. To some extent, it was a popular as Aventus is in America (I know i can't rly compare both countries but you get the idea).

Being worn ostentatiously by the masses to attract girls while it was meant to be a singular, subtle and discreet scent killed it

That being said, if you don't live in Paris, you should definitely consider buying it. It's a great scent
