How do you define signature scent and what’s your current sig scent?

Do you wear your signature scent day after day after day? I tend to this with a lot of fragrances. I wore Dior homme Eau daily for almost 3-4 years until it was discontinued then moved to Prada lhomme and now it’s the tdH.
I have plenty of other fragrances that I wear on the weekend or for special occasions but I tend to wear the same thing to the office everyday.

I would define a Signature Scent as something you wear so often that it’s a scent you are “known” for.

Most BNers have a fairly large collection/wardrobe, mainly to have some variety in what fragrance they wear.

So BNers are the last people you’d think a Signature Scent would apply to…

Doesn’t for me anymore. With 87 frags and counting!

I don't think I wear one often enough that it would be considered a signature scent. The one scent that does get noticed more than others is Initio Parfums Prives Oud For Greatness. I currently only use two sprays, one behind each ear, and it still seems to get noticed more than most of my other fragrances I that I wear daily. I think that has more to do with it pushing as hard as it does rather than it being worn often. I rotate through approximately 120 different fragrances that i wear daily during most of the year, with the other 20 being primarily heavier fall & winter scents.

Like many here, I wouldn't say I had a signature scent. To me a signature scent would be one I wear so frequently people would necessarily associate the scent with me.

I suppose Bois du Portugal is sort of my mental signature scent in that I do love it and wear it a fair amount. But in practice, I shift around so much there aren't many people that would consider that my scent.

I understand a signature scent to be one that feels so much like you that it seems to express who you are in a constant nonverbal way, like a signal; a process of identification takes place organically, rather than through a deliberate search (a signature scent find you; you gravitate toward it). I've never had one or wanted one, as I love matching moods to perfumes - I have favorite fragrances, but none that I wear often enough to trigger a recognition that I'd recently been in the room.

My definition of signature scent: a perfume that i wear on a daily basis in exclusivity over longer period of times (at least for a few years in a row or the absolute same perfume day after day for a lifetime).
I used to have a few signaure perfume over the years (Montana Parfum d' Homme, Zino, D&G pour Homme, Cool Water, Fahrenheit) but i don't have anymore. Some of my perfumes do get more wears than others but they don't count as signature ones.

Totally agree and that's such a beautiful way of describing it, @Bonnette!

I've completely drifted away from anything resembling a signature scent in the last couple of years. There's just too much out there to explore and enjoy! If anything, I often don't like restricting myself to one fragrance a day, I'll wear 2 or even 3. For quite a few years before that I had a few, starting with YSL Rive Gauche PH and then Chanel Platinum Egoiste, Chanel Pour Monsieur EDT and now Givenchy Insense, but the latest one is just regular in my rotation and even further from anything I'd consider a signature scent.

Givenchy Insense is a very interesting perfume. So feminine for a masculine one. I suppose that was the reason it didn't became very popular back at the time. If you ever come across Boss Intense (the discontinued red bottle for women) try it. You will be surprised to find out how similar they are.

Thanks for mentioning the Boss, I'll have to see if I can track down a mini! Not generally a fan of the house but I really like Boss Spirit! I like the complexity of Insense and the fact that the muguet and magnolia are so prominent in the heart, they seem to complement one another perfectly! Another one with a similar vibe which I love is Rochas Globe, one of Ellena's best IMO. People often also reference Nino Cerruti PH when I mention Insense, but to my nose it's simply a woody fragrance with a prominent 'ripe' jasmine note and not particularly floral!

Both very good perfumes, especially Nino Cerutti. I think it's a masterpiece. I personally don't find similarities between any of the above mentioned and Insense.

I have in the past worn a sole Signature Scent for a number of years (and a rare wearing of something else for a special occasion). Some of these were cK be, Cool Water, Chic For Men, Armani Attitude.

Nowadays I have too many bottles to want to restrict myself to wearing only one. I wear 20-25 more frequently than the others and I’d call these my current Signature Rotation some of which are BdP, Aventus, Cool Water, Kouros and Tiffany For Men.

Like others have said, I like to have a bit of variety with fragrances. The potential problem with wearing the same fragrance every day would be the strong possibility of getting noseblind to it from regular exposure to the same smell.

But sometimes I think it might be quite nice to just have a signature scent. There's something kind of reassuring and comforting about familiarity, for others as well as yourself. Perhaps pets may prefer their owner to have a consistent scent, too, as that's how some animals identify people.

I wore the very definition of signature scent from 1994 until 2020 and that scent was Green Irish Tweed. I wore this exclusively for 26 years. Day in day out. I was Green Irish Tweed and it was me.
Coworkers and friends would comment saying I knew you were here somewhere. GIT in its prime left an incredible sillage. It is still a very remarkable fragrance. I just choose not to support Creed any longer.

Currently fast becoming my signature is Bon Monsieur by Rogue I just can stop wearing it and enjoying more and more each time, truly a remarkable scent

You mean other than Brut and Old Spice?…. My kids would say they are my true signatures. Those and Dad jokes…🙂

However, for all my other collecting, and as much as I wear a wide variety of fragrances, I think I’m always still on the quest for a signature scent. Do I have a signature—no. But as a default reach for me:
—For work—Aramis, Cool Water, Boucheron PH (EDT or EDP), Versace L’Homme
—For everything else—Chanel PM EDT, Dior Homme Intense, Giorgio for Men, Tuscany

Hi all,

Same story here. That is to say, I've so many bottles of wonderful Fragrances that I don't have a "Signature scent" per se. That being said, I would say my TOP favorites (owned) Fragrances, are what I think of being my "me" Fragrances: L'Artisan (original Circus Girl riding Tiger label) DZING! Christian Dior "Eau Sauvage EdP" (2012), Santa Maria Novella "Acqua di Cuba", MPG "Eau des Iles", Santa Maria Novella "Nostalgia", Caron "Yatagan", Marlou (original) 50ml d'ambiguite, L'Occitane Baux, Lalique "Encre Noire", Lorenzo Villoresi "Piper Nigrum".

Soooo many other wonderful Fragrances to continue this listing.

In short my definition would be a fragrance I'm known by others to wear and is also something I can fall back on in any occasion. It also, for me, has to be something I love and holds a special place in my heart and mind.

For me it would be Acqua di Giò Profumo. I've bought a bottle just about every year since it was released having first purchased it on holiday 2015/2016 and it holds memories of that holiday. It's also a fragrance that can be worn all year round and not many people, if any, in my circle of life and work wear it.

Also, if I asked my wife to go into my collection and pull one bottle that reminded her of me it would probably be either Profumo, Lorenzo Villoresi Uomo (another one that holds a special place in my heart) or Comme des Garcons Hinoki (her personal favorite from my collection).

That being said, times and tastes change, along with discontinuations so my mind will always be open to trying new things.

In addition to the many great points expressed already, seconding on one hand that a signature scent is not just associated with the individual style and even personality of someone into fragrance.

But also has a certain ability to be classic, timeless and/or at least quirky enough ta be associated by almost anyone with this particular wearer.

Furthermore seconding all the replies about not having a signature scent either, personally being far more into regularly using a fairly constant and often barely changing "signature collection/lineup".

If i go by most worn since i started recording sotd in Basenotes, it would be 1740 HdP.
I guess it's also one where friends and family might also associate with me.
But way too many bottles to actually have a true signature.
In my younger days i would wear a single fragrance for stretches of time, e.g. YSL Jazz, JPG Le Male, Boss Orange Sport.
Wow, my tastes have changed.

Hi Pep. Just watched your Youtube review on green fragrances. Great job as always, and I love how you described your newest
acquisition, Chanel 19 edt. Been considering purchasing this classic for a while now. You might have convinced me. ;)

I've had a few signature scents over the years. As a kid it was definitely Drakkar Noir, followed by Polo Sport. Later on it was briefly Dunhill Desire (the original red bottle - not my finest moment).

But my one true love, and the one I wore the longest, was L'Occitane Eau de Vetyver. It was my daily driver for something like 17 years. I had Terre d'Hermes for special occasions, but Eau de Vetyver was the one I reached for most and the one people associated with me. To be honest, it probably would still be my signature if L'Occitane hadn't discontinued it. I would have just bought another bottle, instead of joining this site and going off the deep end.

Before joining basenotes, my signature was Curve. I wore it every day. I still wear it from time to time, but nobody would recognize me by that smell anymore because I wear something different every day, so it doesn't fit what "signature" means.

Part of me envies people who do wear a signature scent, but I'm so hooked on variety that I can't do it.

In my teens I wore JPG Le Male and Declaration, people knew these as my scents, especially Declaration because I don't think anyone else wore it.

Then in my twenties I would have a few bottles but mainly wear one. I had Penhaligons Opus 1870 as a special occasion fragrance.

I think what happens for me is if I find one I like I wear the sh*t out of it because I think it's rare to find and I want to enjoy it while it lasts. This means I went through two bottles of TdH, almost two of Endymion. Two or more Heritage EDT.

Nowadays I'd be surprised to get through a bottle of something but some of my bottles are well used.

I could choose Eau de Guerlain as my signature now, it really represents a lot of my ideas about personal fragrance and artistry in scent and stirs my soul. It's less about an identity seeking "This is who I am" and more about "This is how I want others to smell me" which in other words is saying this is the scent message I want to give to others.

Personally I like when people have a signature scent. I like that my dad smelled like Fahrenheit for a long time, it merged with my sense of him and is in my memories now. Same with girlfriends, Chance, Deep Red, Miss Dior, Narciso. (These are names of fragrances, not nicknames for gfs :p )
