Welcome to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong in Chinese means ‘Fragrant Harbour’ which is pronounced ‘Heung Gong’ in Cantonese. Perfume is pronounced ‘Heung Soy’ - literally ‘fragrant water’.

This opening thread draws on the earlier posts from Coconut, Frowned Upon & mr. reasonable

Here is a little niche perfume shopping guide in HK . . .

Joyce Boutique – Exclusive designer fashion forward store.

18 Queen's Rd. Central
Shop G106, Gateway, Canton Rd., Tsim Sha Tsu
i

Annick Goutal
L’Artisan (selected items)
Creed (edited line)
Diptyque (full selection)

- Festival Walk, Kowloon Tong (Goutal & Diptyque)
- In-Store at Lane Crawford Times Square (Goutal & Diptyque)

Lane Crawford - High-end department store group.

IFC Mall – carry niche lines listed below.
Harbour City & Times Square carry mainly mainstream
designer lines.

Amouage
Clive Christian
Jo Malone (standalone store)
Acqua di Parma + Blu Med
Creed (same as Joyce – commercial ones)
Fresh
Thierry Mugler Mirror Collection
Costume National
Narciso Rodriguez
Loewe
Juliette Has a Gun
Van Cleef
Hermes (not Hermessences)
Cinq Mondes (in the 'home' section)

Harvey Nichols – The Landmark, Queen’s Road, Central & The ONE, Nathan Road, TST

Guerlain - The Exclusives: L'Art et la Matiere, Les Parisiennes, Les Elixirs Charnels, Extraits and limited editions.

Shiseido - Serge Lutens (Landmark only)
Acqua di Parma + Blu Med.
Demeter
(Also has mainstream desiger counters)

Hermes – Icehouse Street, Central / Pacific Place / Lee Garden etc.
Hermessences + the commercial line.

Dries Van Noten - Shop 232 The Landmark, Central
Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle

(Originally posted by Coconut in 2007)

2010 Updates:

Frederic Malle is now available at the main Joyce store on Queen's Rd, Central (including the new line of Candles) and The Gateway, Canton Rd. TST.

Chanel in IFC now carries Les Exclusifs and a couple of Parfums.

Kapok: Frowned Upon alerted us to a new store called Kapok in Sun Street (near Pacific Place 3 / Star Street) which carries Heeley, Lostmarc'h, Astier de Villate, Dr. Vranjes and a few other below the radar lines. No need for coffee beans between sniffs - you can sit outside under the trees with a capuccino.

Lutens export line is available at Shiseido counters in Harvey Nicks, Landmark and Festival Walk.

Etro Boutiques in IFC & Lee Garden still carry a few of their perfume line.

Commes de Garcons line now in the new CdG store, Icehouse St., Central.

Update May 2010:

Maison Francis Kurkdjian line is available at Joyce Queen's Road, Central and Gateway Store, Canton Road TST.

June 2010:

Histoires de Parfums line has been launched in IT Causeway Bay & Peddar Street stores. An edited line of 12 or so in total including the 'historicals' in both 120ml & 14ml. Interesting because a while ago I read in an interview they were looking to Lane Crawford for distribution - guess that fell thru, then.

Dior Exclusives (Cologne Blanche etc.) can be found in the Dior Flagship store in the Landmark, Central, next door to Harvey Nicks.

Tom Ford has opened a stand-alone boutique on Level 2 of IFC carrying pretty much the full line of his fragrances. Also now G/F Gateway, Canton Road TST.

July 2010

Martin Margiela store in Icehouse St. now has the MM 'untitled' EDT.

Nasomatto line of 30 ml Extraits launched at IT Causeway Bay flagship (Margiela 'untitled' is also there).

August, 2010:

Monocle Shop has opened a few doors down from the second Kapok store in Sun Street - the CdG Monocle 1: Hinoki and 2: Laurel are there.

October 2010

Kapok is now carrying the Eau d'Italie line.

Lutens News (and it's not good.)

From Jan 2011 the three Lutens counters will only be restocking half a dozen or so of the more obviously femme florals in the line and letting the rest of the selection run down due to poor demand. Hardly surprising really given that (a) the line is tucked away in three Shiseido make-up and cosmetic counters where most men would fear to tread and (b) HK climate and general local tastes. If you want the denser accords like Chergui, Arabie, Serge Noir, Fille en Aiguilles et al grab 'em while you can.

November 2010

Joyce Boutiques are carrying the Honoré des Prés "New York Collection" by Olivia Giacobetti - I Love Carrottes, Love Coco and Vamp in NY complete with the cardboard cups etc. etc.

December 2010

Penhaligons is back at LC IFC but no English Fern to try. Close but no cigar.

Further updates can be found in the 2011 Thread - you won't have to look far to find it :)

Re: Hong Kong - Niche Guide

Thanks mr. r for clearing that up. Seems there's something at IFC until Tuesday. You and Coconut might be interested, stop by and have a look and possibly take some photos. Quote below from hk-mag:

Bottled Up
If you’re a sucker for scents, then don’t miss IFC’s in-mall exhibition of vintage perfume bottles. There’ll be 100 vintage bottles on display from collector Leon Ko’s private stash, all to be displayed from June 9 to 15 in the IFC Oval Atrium. Take a look at Lancome’s extremely rare 1957 Crescent Moon bottle that was launched to celebrate the Sputnik satellite, or go even older with the exquisitely engraved mermaid bottle dating back to 1908. Pictured are the cute “Chui Chin Chow” enamel bottles that capture the pre-1920s fascination with the east.
Oval Atrium, IFC Mall, 8 Finance St., Central, 2295-3308

Better late than never - a few pix from the recent private collection exhibition, exotic and hopelessly un-PC . . . but there you go :) IMG_0283.jpg IMG_0285.jpg IMG_0287.jpg IMG_0289.jpg IMG_0291.jpg IMG_0297.jpg

Those are fantastic! Misguided at best by any modern standard, obviously, but fantastic.

Thanks! I'm celebrating! Firstly, to have a reply over here and secondly because you can actually see them - this was a test upload job, seems to work - I'll see if they stay here or disappear after a while! Will try to get a few more up over the next couple of days - it was a fascinating exhibition but the owner wasn't around the day I went.

Yes, I can imagine it must get pretty lonely in here, not to mention the outside fragrance world. Happily, the "Get New Posts" function does not discriminate.

Hong Kong has always fascinated me; the confluence of old and new, Chinese and the British. I may be bouncing around Singapore and Malaysia later this year, and would love to get up there at some point, too.

Re: Hong Kong - Niche Guide

Hi mr. reasonable, I emailed you a couple of months ago when I wanted to pay Hong Kong a visit in December 2010 and I must say the Hong Kong Perfume Guide was exactly what I needed! The photos which you uploaded look really cute! I am mildly jealous that you get to attend such exhibitions in Hong Kong.

Oh and Emlynevermore, not sure if it's too late but if ever you need any information on the perfume scene in Singapore, do drop me a PM and I'll try to get back to you asap! :)

I was at the PP Lane Crawford a few weeks ago and the SA at the perfume section told me that they are soon moving out to IFC.

Short answer - you can't :)

I do remember seeing Carthusia somewhere some time back but not recently - none of the others are carried here, sadly.

What is currently about LC at the Pacific Place? :) Did they move? Its store is still listed at the website of the mall, as well as at LC' website:undecided:

There is still a Lane Crawford store in Pacific Place carrying home ware (including soaps, candles, the sticks in a bottle etc.) but the whole main 2 floors on the street side are gone - fragrances and fashion.

There is a new 'Lab Concept' affair across the walkway in Queensway / Admiralty Centre with a loose arrangement of boutiques with Kiehls, Aesop and a scaled down Joyce Beauty etc. but the high end fashion lines and the niche perfumes have all migrated to IFC.

PS

As of August 2012 the former LC space has been turned into a Fragrance & Cosmetics 'corridor' with Chanel and a few others, notable Joyce Beauty, which carries Frederic Malle, Diptyque and few others.

PPS

Serge Lutens have joined By Kilian, Acqua di Parma, Penhaligons and the usual suspects at the revamped Harvey Nichols G/F area just opposite this corridor in PP, so quite a lot of stuff under one roof again.

I just returned from Hong Kong and have the following update regarding the Harvey Nichols @ The One:

Guerlain - very extensive collection of fragrances including hard to find fragrances. I picked up Eau de Guerlain @ HKD $660.

Armani Prive - they carry the complete line (this may be posted elsewhere) I am still kicking myself for not picking up Bois d'Encens but I had already purchased Amouage Epic Man and could not justify another incense frag purchase.

Not aware of any niche stores in BJG - at best you will be able to get some exclusive lines like Hermessences, Armani, Chanel and maybe Dior in their respective flagship stores but you are paying 30% more than in HK (or probably elsewhere) due to high import duty on fragrances. Sorry.

Guys, there's recently a plenty of Dior' and Armani Beaute' corners/smaller boutiques all around malls, like Elements, Festival or IFC. Do they also stock exclusives?
As far as I know, Armani Prive is sold at one of Armani's boutiques in Chater House, and Dior Privee' line is available @ Dior boutique at Elements. Are there any other places?
