According to Auparfum's review, the scent is centred around benzoin and carnation, somewhere between Bois d’Arménie and Prada's Infusion d'Œillet. It's described as a linear skin scent with little development or projection.

Very much interested since I love Bois d'A and carnation notes.
Sounds nothing like Encre from the review, Au Parfum has excellent reviewers btw, aside from a certain disdain for some masculine classics which imo deserved better ( paco, azzaro, rive gauche for example)

Or maybe Nombre Noir is totally Liu.

Of course it is!:rolleyesold::rolleyesold: When I saw the LUI, it strongly associated me with a perfume I have seen before. I forgot about the original LIU bottle, and the first thing that popped in my mind was the NN...

I tried this out on Friday. The eugenol is completely overdosed in the opening: you really, REALLY need to like clove in order to enjoy Lui. I don't and didn't, deciding to scrub my wrists after half an hour, so I'm afraid to say I don't know whether it dries down to anything more pleasant.

Maybe I need to rethink my dubious attitude. I have been known to wear a clove necklace to keep Kouros detractors at bay.

Thanks for the report!!!

Due here in September, apparently. I like clove, I like carnation, I like pretty much everything mentioned so far . . . probably hate it, then!

I've been wearing it, I really like it, heavy on clove and I thought it wouldn't be my cup but turns out it is, in my opinion a good offering. it's being promoted here in Paris as a fairly mainstream launch, big push in the department stores, refreshing for something pretty daring.
Good job Guerlain!

Blind buy, first impressions: pear dipped in dark chocolate, carnation, some incense. Kind of chancey and weird for a fragrance that might be marketed as unisex, a brand flagship. It's more like one of the black bottle Jo Malones. An interesting experiment, nowhere near the realm of Guerlain's heritage fragrances.

Oh wow, you bought it blind. Props!

Is the carnation prominent? Pear and chocolate, eh?

Pear note is a bit more prominent than anticipated. It melds well with clove and cinnamon. Smoky notes at the base add to the dark chocolate effect.

You'd think it's a gourmand with all those foodie notes, but it all comes together in a spiced floral cloud. Yes, carnation forward.

Two wears so far. I liked it better the second time. It will wear well in cool autumn weather.

Packaged in Guerlain's nice, leather-look box, which almost helps to justify the high price. I predict that Lui will have its fans, but it won't be a blockbuster hit. A bit too quirky for mass appeal, and a tad too floral for most men. Still, glad it's in my collection. Carnation, cloves, cinnamon -- love those notes. Of course I had to buy.

I tried this at the guerlain store at Las Vegas Palazzo shops a few weeks ago.

I liked it. My ladyfriend did not.

I think it reminds me of Tokyo Milk Bulletproof in some ways, though its been a while since ive smelled that one.

Definitely worth a sniff.

Can't wait! This will be a must-sniff for me.

Seriously. They just standardized the majority of their masculine frags into one bottle style LAST YEAR, and they're already changing their minds. It looks like one of the most storied houses in perfumery has the attention span of a 4-year-old. I guess this validates the opinions of some (myself included) who thought the one-bottle scheme was dumb from the outset.

I'd expect L'Homme Ideal and flankers to get changed to the HR bottle and join "the rogues gallery" once this new one is available worldwide.

That's the only sensible thing, on concessions displays in stores it focuses attention on the latest release.

Sweet, soft and smokey. An awesome fragrance. For lovers of Bois d'Armenie.
Don't smell any cloves.

Thank you for the information, OP. This is interesting. I'll look forward to any new release from Guerlain and usually buy it as soon as it's released. I had not heard about this.

Thanks again. I appreciate you taking the time to post and share news of the release.

Bump. Sniffed it today. Really, really enjoyed. Did a lot of sniffing and Lui was the standout.

It has a kind of dusty, ashy, dry spice (clove/carnation) structure that offsets the sweetness beautifully. Didn’t get much of the listed pear note in the opening, more of a lightly spicy leather/benzoin smoky thing from top to bottom, with more spice and smoke on top, and dusty, almost papery, leathery benzoin on the bottom. In general attitude/vibe, I am reminded somewhat of Arsen Lupin Dandy. Add some smoke and spice to that suedy leather, and you’d maybe have something like this.

Very, very initial impressions, but I’ll likely buy. It’s something I’d wear a ton.

Side note: the fragrance floor at Bergdorf NYC is a lion’s pit! Kudos to the Guerlain folks for not treating me like prey.

Okay, oldish thread but resurfaced, so FWIW. Grabbed it and enjoying it a lot. I actually nabbed a second bottle via a friend wo works at LVMH - 'friends and family sale'.

LiveJazz nails it for me - great review!

The "carnation+" opening (and real personality of LUI) is great. The 'dry dustiness' of it reminds me of eating nasturtium flower petals in a green salad - something I used to do years ago in NZ where the flowers were all over the place. It has a 'bite' to it that is really arresting.

And then the benzoin under-pinning it all gives it a lift that draws you in and keeps it affable without going 'sweet'.

To me it's essentially a 'duet' between these two. Not sure there is any other Guerlain (or anything else) I would closely compare it to, altho there is a nice dry, airy note in L'Ame d'un Heros (cardamom, I think) and Arsene Lupin Dandy that is not a million miles away - if you like one you might enjoy the other!
