Good Vetiver That Won’t Break the Bank?

Hey gang!
I know expense is subjective, but a fair quality to price ratio would be ideal.
  • I tried Guerlain Vetiver (not the Extreme, just the current EDT.) I liked it, until:
  • I made the mistake of trying Creed’s Original Vetiver at the Creed counter and, well, that ruined it for me! 🤣
The Guerlain was quite citrusy and I’m looking for way more vetiver and a lot less citrus.
Any recommendations?

Thank you!

If Creed's Original Vetiver ruined Guerlain Vetiver for you, then it's very likely that Guerlain Vetiver Pour Elle will ruin Creed Original Vetiver. You just have to find it, which is difficult. Guerlain periodically produces it and then stops. It's a more floral and girl-soapy version of Original Vetiver - more clean spring dress and less white business shirt. It's an excellent fragrance, and not badly priced when in production. I prefer it to Guerlain Vetiver, but find Original Vetiver easier to wear because it's less assertive. Vetiver Pour Elle is not shy.

From what I understand, there are some counterfeits of Original Vetiver that are almost impossible to differentiate from it. So if you go on the Bay and order a cheap, big, new OV that you know is just wrong, you will likely get a superior counterfeit. There may also be some good clones out there which are really well-priced.

Examples could be the Carven or CDG Vetiveru. Straightforward, but effective. My favorite vetivers are on the expensive side (Vetiver extraordinaire, Dior, Sycomore).

I don't like Original vetiver either-it's more about the soap than the vetiver.

Creed is indeed a very atypical one, since it uses all the parts of the plant, but mostly the leaves, as opposed to most of the vetiver fragrance who use vetiver root oil.

I'd suggest

Essence No.6 Vetiver by Elie Saab
Vetyverio EDP by Dyptique
Agua Fresca Vetiver by Adolfo Dominguez
Choc by Cardin
Vetiver Cedre by Chantecaille
Vetiver by Pefumer H

Won't be quite as good as the Creed, but try Mugler Cologne Come Together or preferably the original Mugler Cologne. :)
Yes, that is the best alternative to Creed's.

Good suggestion. Tom Ford Grey Vetiver is another option. It's pricier than Guerlain, but Grey Vetiver is available in smaller, 50ml bottles.
Since OP perceived Guerlain's as being too citrus-y, Grey Vetiver sounds like a worst option in this case.

Encre Noire
Nice, but that one is more a cypress-centric fragrance, more so than vetiver. (but a mice one on its own).

Ellie Saab Essence No. 6 Vetiver may still be found at a reasonable price.
THAT is what I recommend in #1. A grassy/powdery very unisex vetiver without citrus in the top. Excellent suggestion!

Nice call on Vetyverio. I shied away from recommending because it's a bit more expensive, but that's one of the top vetivers on my shelf (and my first vetiver-centric fragrance).

Chanel Sycomore EdP (Smoky, slightly sweet & woody)
Comme des Garcons Vettiveru (A straightforward light vetiver with hints of citrus/light floral)
Frederic Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire (Vetiver in all its glory, fresh and highly concentrated amounts of vetiver)
The Different Company Sel de Vetiver (Vetiver and an almost salty and marine-like)
Lalique Encre Noire (Inky/rooty vetiver)

Le Labo Vetiver 46 is a nice, crisp, bitter vetiver I find seductive.

Unfortunately, it lasts about 15 minutes on my skin, so I cannot recommend it, particularly at those prices.

Terre d'Hermes Eau Intense Vetiver is magnificent, but you have to like the Terre d'Hermes DNA for it to work for you.

I've never tried Vetiver 46 but it's said to be a dupe for Comme des Garcons 2 Man, which I have and love. It's quite affordable in comparison to Vetiver 46.

As said above, If you do not want to break the bank, Encre Noire and Carven are great choices.

Similar to Creed's, but unfortunately with even less (or no) vetiver, Mugler Cologne.

I would add Prada Infusion de Vetiver, as well. Very good, imo.

If you raise the price bar, there are many good options, as we can see.

Quite a few solid options mentioned already.
Also adding l'Occitane Eau de Vetyver
Hey Ken! Thank you! ***Slightly off topic…
I have heard so much about L’Occitane, recently. I’ve tried their Verviene (sp?) products (bath, lotion, EDT, etc.) Loved them!
Is L’Occitane a hidden gem of a house that goes under the radar?!?!
Appreciate
anyone’s thoughts on this “house,” please?

Let me know if I’m out of bounds on the rules and I’ll start a new thread. 😇

When I was a pre-disenfranchised Mugler fanatic- and loooonnng before I became an aspiring frag head, I remember the cologne smelling like nothing and it didn’t last worth a darn. But that was in my Alien hay day. BUT…I didn’t even know what vetiver was then. I have an OG sample vial that I’ll try NOW!!

I love the Prada Infusions! Will try!
i would raise the price bar for quality. But I confess, I’m a philistine who puts stock into projection and longevity.
Is that even possible with a vetiver frag? Or is it just one of those notes you have to appreciate close to the skin?

This Prada checks almost all the boxes. It's good quality, well blended, pleasant and very present throughout the day. I like the second version better.
