GIT in 2023?

Jun 4, 2011
How does Green Irish Tweed (GIT) smell these days? It's been about 10 years since I wore it almost exclusively on a daily basis. I just moved and found a box with my old colognes with two nearly empty bottles of GIT.

I have to say, it smells amazing. I've been wearing Dior Homme Sport (2022), Aventus, and Baccarat 540 lately and GIT is a nice change of pace. I used to love it back in the day and it's a classic.

How are the new bottles? I'm thinking of ordering a 100ml.

I first tried it around 1995 and it made a big impression on me. My next bottle was around 2012, and it did seem weaker. But a part of me always questions how much of that is just fautly " scent memory."

I haven't tried it in quite awhile. To Mr Smellin Good, I think there is a slight chance it is technically weaker, but also a chance a new bottle will seem weaker to you whether it is or not.

I would suggest settling with an older 75ml or 120ml bottle instead.

I think like most creeds it is better about 3 to 6 months after first spray.

I always feel I need to buy a bottle , spray a little and let it “rest” for a few months to mature.

Possibly mind games… but I feel this with GIT all th time
No I think enough of us have had that "maturation" issue with Creeds in particular that there may be some validity to that. It's happened to me with Bois du Portugal.

Would be excellent if 2022 and 2023 batches are just how I remember it in 2016-2017 I've smelled a 2014 bottle and WHOA fantastic stuff I fear I will be disappointed though with the change of ownership of Creed. I'd love to add this one back in the wardrobe but at almost $300 it better be just as good as before for me to even consider.

I have older bottles but recently tested the new stuff on my skin from a counter at Dillard’s in New Orleans. I thought it smelled just fine but it was a skin scent within an hour. About 4 hours later my wife said she could barely smell it on me when I let her put her nose to my skin. I wanted to make sure I hadn’t gone anosmic. I was happy to discover that Neroli Sauvage and Erolfa had excellent performance (on test strip) although the scent profiles have somewhat changed over the years (yet they still smelled great to me). Honestly, when I run out of GIT I’ll just happily use my Rasasi Egra, Tres Nuit, and vintage script Cool Water. Egra smells essentially just like GIT to me. I bought Egra for less than $30usd and it looks as though it’s still readily available for under $40usd. Just depends on what you want to spend. But I’d recommend testing the new stuff on your skin for performance before buying a bottle.

What about the longevity of 2009 vs 2022? Any significant differences?
For me it’s a significant difference, as stated in my original post. But that’s strictly in relation to performance and not smell. It’s still GIT and I’ve got no complaints with the smell really. They may be using a different fixative or something that my skin is gobbling up that wouldn’t be an issue for others. This is why I recommend sampling it. Overall I’ve been disappointed with Creed performance of recent stock found currently at counters, except Neroli Sauvage and Erolfa. For people new to Creed, it may seem just fine. I expect better.

For me, Green Irish Tweed is my first ever Creed fragrance that i have ever smelled and owned for that matter. Having read many reviews online, I bought 2 ml. sample and after almost finishing it, decided to pull a trigger and got myself 50 ml. just a few days ago (though after i first sprayed 2 ml., i instantly knew i had to have it). In my opinion, GIT smells just heavenly - pretty much everything ones would want from a classic, masculine but elegant, gentleman's scent. So what i was talking about? Oh yeah, longevity. I put it on my forearm, one large, heavy spray but pretty close to the skin so the whole surface of my arm was soaking wet for a good 15 seconds. It was around 3 pm yesterday, and today at around 12 pm i still could smell the scent off my skin. Projection wise, i think sillage is rather moderate - i stopped smelling it like 30 mins after the spray but my wife told me the whole room smelled heavily, so i assume i just can't pick it up shortly after. Or maybe the scent actually sits very close to the skin, even with the older batches.

I can only speak of my own personal experience but I have full bottles of 2015,2017, 2020 and a pre batch code I’m unsure of but probably early 2000’s and there are clear differences between all of them even to my immature nose. They all smell good and they all smell unmistakably like GiT but the 2015 is by far the nicest smelling and longest lasting and the 2020 is my least favourite. Knowing what I know now I would always seek out 2014-2016 bottle of pretty much any Creed. To those saying they smell no difference between old and new all I can say is are you being serious? I guess at least one of us needs to get our sense of smell checked!

I think with Creeds the batches vary each year. I wasn’t sure if the new ones were completely watered down. I placed my order last night and will let everyone know what my experience is with the newer ones.

Please do, would be interesting to hear your thoughts, especially after a major pause from using it.
I will say, the small amount that I have from back in the day really brought me back. It made me realize how much I love fougere fragrances. There's something just super classy about it. Can't wait to get my new bottle and try it out.

Ok here's my initial thoughts on getting a new bottle. First off I was super disappointed in Saks Fifth. Shipping time was great but the Creed box looks super worn out. The bottle stem cap is crooked. The lot number can't be verified on Check Fresh. The first pump sprayed (usually unused Creeds take a few full pumps before the juice starts flowing) didn't require any warm up--it had clearly been sprayed before. So probably going to return this and order from a reliable connection at deeply discounted prices. Second off the juice is still amazing.

Today's juice isn't as lemony in the opening and not as deep and rich as my bottle from 2010. It's more warm and woody with the citrus notes playing second fiddle. The mid is as exactly as I remember it with the violet. Will take me a while to know the base. I suppose perfume ages with time. So a 13 year bottle will show it's age by creating a deeper and darker smell. Overall I'm pretty pleased with the scent.

Good to hear you liked it! I'm not implying it, but maybe the differences in smell are due to the fact that the juice in your 2010 has been macerating for a substantial time now? Or, maybe they have indeed changed some of the components so it all plays slightly different song now..

On a separate note, what about longevity and sillage? Comparable to your 2010 bottle?

P.S. My 50 ml bottle has also came with the lot number that i could not verify. I thought it was a fake one at the beginning and almost lost it due to the fact that i spent so much money on a fake fragrance, but after checking online it became apparent that Creed changed their lot numeration in 2022, so it's all good with that. In regards to the first pump, mine starter spraying normally after one (maybe 2? can't remember now) empty pump.

This is a reason why I am slow to buy any more Creeds. I hate "investing" relatively large sums in a scent for it to only "perform" to that price 3 to 6 months down the line.

I purchased a PdM last week (Haltane) and its nuclear straight off. Same for bottles of Amouge, Nasamatto, Ganymede, Bois Imperial etc. that I have bought down the years.

I'm with ya on this. That's why I left Creed's back in 2013-2014 timeframe. I got tired of taking the risk that one batch of Avenuts or GIT would be different in the future. So I stopped buying them and pretty much exclusively wore the entire range of Bleu de Chanel. Chanel is the least prone to reformulations and they're still privately owned--something Creed can't say now that they're owned by a global private equity group. I was really disappointed when I heard they sold the business. Makes me wonder how true the Creed story is. Why would you sell a family-owned business from the 1600's? There's some brands that are priceless--like Rolex--and Creed could have been one of them. But alas, I gave in to my purchase because of how darn good smelling GIT is, especially this time of year!

I recently bought a bottle of GIT from Jomashop. March 2020 Batch and it's a skin scent after 45 minutes-- weak to no sillage as well. Compared to a sample I got from Saks (great sillage and could smell on skin after 6 hours) this batch sucks. Not sure if I just got a bad batch or Joma altered it. Box and Bottle are legit, I'm confused. I've ordered from Joma before and no issues.
Heavily disappointed with either: (a) Joma's practices; or (b) Creed's production.

Now being almost a month, how do you find your new bottle of GIT performing? Is it just like you expected it to be, or worse/better? Would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

None to me.
Have you truly made this comparision? I feel that this response is very misleading if we should be honest here.
We are talking about Creed; all of their fragrances are very much different to their former versions.
Even batches from one same year can be very different.
One thing that is for sure though, is that performance and quality has dropped significantly since Blackrock (and even prior to that).

Not to me. Perhaps to you and others.

Hi folks. I thought i'd give an update now almost 2 month since i bought my 50 ml bottle of GIT. So, having sprayed a few times and left it in the dark, cool closet i almost forgot about it, until recently. I took it out, sprayed it and hell, it smells significantly better now. I don't think it's the smell itself that changed much, but rather the depth of it and the overall performance.

Not sure how it happens that some people say GIT fades away after a few hours. I could still clearly smell the remnants of the base 24 hrs later, and though the projection is now higher than before, it is still a bit lower than some heavy stuff in my collection - Bel Ami and Fahrenheit, both vintage.

I guess the moral of the story is, 2023 GIT is an amazing fragrance, and clearly not as bad as it may seem, at least to my nose, the nose that didn't smell GIT years ago and can't compare. Who knows?

P.S. I have both modern and vintage versions of the same fragrances. While modern formulations smell nice and just ''like they should'' to a regular buyer, comparing vintage and modern is drastic difference to my nose at least. Usually, the vintage formulas are significantly more complex, deep and rich smelling with noticeably better performance. So i guess the same applies to GIT - the one from 20 years or so ago could be a totally different beast, both in terms of smell and performance.

Hi all,

I have two 2023 bottles of GIT (Shop sent me a second after I complained about lack of scent) - neither are near as good as what I have smelled before. I'm hoping that they get better with maturity, so I'm just leaving them be for now.
Is that 6month maturity thing true?

I have a 2022/23 bottle and so far after only 1 wearing, I am getting too much harsh grassy/violet leaf note for my liking.
I was hoping for more of the smooth sandalwood and ambergris richness, but so far only hints of it.

I repeat the above question, will this change with time to 'mature' now I've sprayed and let some air in?
If so how long does it usually take?

Opening is just as good as I always remembered, but longevity is horrible in the most recent batch I tried a few month ago. I get 1-2 hours max of projection.

That combined with its price doubling over the past 10 years and the bottle size being smaller makes it a worse value than it used to be. If price isn't a concern, and you're willing to carry a small decant around to reapply, it's still worth it.

GIT perplexes me. I have a 2020 bottle I got on my 50th bday. Cool Water used to be my signature in the 90s and it worked wildly well with me. I know these two aren't perfectly the same but it would mean that I should show a shine to GIT though. But overall I dislike it one day and think it's good the next. Longevity is ok if I spray on clothing. Not as much on skin. I think GIT recent bottles aren't that far off from the past but I will say that I used to think GIT had this very beautiful aura about it. Now I find it a little too in my face/green throughout. Like it lost some of the ethereal quality. I try different spraying distances to get that back but it's tough. I rarely reach for it.
