Best gardenia scent

Gardenia is a note which doesn't quite enjoy the cachet or the popularity of, say, rose or tuberose or jasmine. But with the release of Serge Lutens's Une Voix Noire, gardenia is in the spotlight again.

What are the other gardenia scents worth sampling? Do you have a favourite gardenia scent, or one with a prominent gardenia note?

Re: Best Gardenia Scent

Well, I have a sample pass going for Hothouse Flower by Ineke, a gardenia soliflore, the link is in my signature below if you would like to sign up to try it! (if you haven't already).

I'm also a big fan of Gardenia Passion. I know it's as much Tuberose as Gardenia, but it's still a great fragrance and I'm a bit of a tuberose fetishist so the more the merrier.

Re: Best Gardenia Scent

Gardenia- Isabey (probably my favorite)
Gardenia Petale- Van Cleef & Arpels (2nd runner up)
Cruel Gardenia- Guerlain
Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia- Estee Lauder
Gardenia- Chanel
Velvet Gardenia- Tom Ford
Une Voix Noire- Serge Lutens
Un Matin d'Orage- Annick Goutal

I've tried all of these except the last two and I've heard good things about them too.

Re: Best Gardenia Scent

True gardenia, with all its dirty glory, is almost unknown in perfumery. It doesn't mean that perfumes with gardenia in the name aren't good, they are just not true gardenias, of focus only on one aspect of the flower. An exception is $$$$$ JAR Jardenia, with an intense mushroom note. (Tom Ford Velvet Gardenia had a touch of it, but it has been discontinued). I have high hopes for Une Voix Noire, but I haven't smelled it yet.

My favourite; Estee Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia.
Runner up; Van Cleef & Arpels Gardenia Petale.

l adore Un Matin d'Orage, but it doesn't strike me as gardenia exactly.

l have great respect & admiration for Jardenia & Velvet Gardenia, but find them both almost unwearable.

l have tried many others, but these are the standouts for me.

Best is very subjective and may not mean "most realistic".
Jardenia is hyper-realistic, but I don't wish to wear it.

My daughter likes Pétales by Chantecaille. "Gardenia lite."
I have a sample of Stephanie by Michael Storer, also very good. Hmm, I'll have to test that again; it's been a while.

But nothing I've smelled matches the scent of the actual flower.

I won the recent gardenia sample prize from PP and posted the first I sampled on the sample of the day thread. When I get over this vile cold I shall be writing the others up on sample of the day too

My Favs:
Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia: very realistic gardenia and tuberose
Tom Ford Velvet Gardenia: a very realistic gardenia lingered among earthy and sweet notes
Isabey Gardenia: sweet gardenia face cream
Van Cleef & Arpels Gardenia Petale: realistic gardenia in the first 30 minutes but its drydown is very vanila-like (still good)
Kai by Kai: green gardenia and stem

Good but not that good:
Jar Jardenia: complex, spicy gardenia
Annick Goutal Un Matin d'Orage: very realistic gardenia in the openning, turned metalic
Marc Jocobs Woman: watery gardenia, not as realistic as Kai or TM Velvet Gardenia.

I don't like:
EA Gardenia: not gardenia, sythetic floral
Annick Goutal Gardenia Passion: vegetal tuberose, not gardenia
Chanel Gardenia (current version): white floral, not gardenia

I am so wanting to try Houseflower by Ineke, Guerlain Cruel Gardenia.

Finally I have found perfection. Until my August Beauties bloom in my garden, I have discovered, a single spray of:
Van Cleef & Arpels Gardenis Petalé, then on top of that a dab of KAI oil, and one could easily be fooled with eyes closed.
I have always loved Gardenia Petalé, BUT though it represents the greener parts of Gardenia perfectly, it was missing a lot of the warmer, expansive 'blue cheese' element. Then when I tried KAI I thought, this one is ALL Spicy Blue Cheese with no greener elements. IDEA!!! After decades, I think I have stopped searching,..
I may even put a little of each, in a 5ml sprayer with some perfumers alcohol, and see if it works!

I've warmed up to Dusita Melodie de l'Amour - a lush white flower composition with a dominant and convincing (to my nose) gardenia note. My wife is also enjoying the gardenia top note in Duchaufour's Gardez-Moi for Jovoy, though it does not persist like the Dusita's gardenia.

Thank you! Yes I know, layering is kinda cheating and is not the most satisfying to end to the hunt ;) wow, Gardenia Soliflorě that sounds great, the name sure is spot on! :)

Royal Green Fig? You should try Santal Massoia from the Hermes Hermessence line, (I have 2 of the 4ml vials, if you would like them...) --> I bought a 200ml Cuir d'Ange in Orange Box with Tissue and Herringbone Fabric Pouch, on eBay for $100 w/ no tax and free shipping! (true story :) and it came with these 2 Santal samples... I wonder why they didn't put fig in the name. The Fig made me think of the tree on my tard, (figs get everywhere by fall LOL)... I love most of the others by Jean Claude though...

Thanks for your kind offer Woody, but l did try Santal Massoia some time ago. l liked it, but find l prefer Philosykos, which l own & love. Shipping to the UK from overseas can be very tricky these days, since the mailing rules changed, so l think it best not to risk it.

Oh yes! That's the Diptyque, I remember that, I don't remember disliking it like the Santal, it seemed, less sharp.. Well thats two for two taking a pass on Santal Massoia (and I can't give the stuff away LOL :") oh-oh LOL
I love the understated (and I think underappreciated, like the actor George Brent) brand that is Diptyque! Coincidentally, I took my cats out by the lake earlier and sprayed Diptyques L'ombre Dans L'eau before going out! (It's a surprisingly cool day east of San Francisco, Diptyque was the perfect choice!) Tam Dao, I am never without as well :) I wish I could discuss these things with people in my life. Glad this place is here! Well, now that we're aquainted, Meet my baby MARBLE!: 20170827_115437.jpg

Marble is the sweetest! Thanks for the photos. The truest gardenia I smelled was the Yves Rocher, long since discontinued. Always hoping to find a replacement, which is why I am reading this thread. By the way, agreed: George Brent is underappreciated.

Narciso Rodriguez Narciso EdP is a wonderful gardenia and musk scent. It's like your favourite sweater in a bottle. Apart from that, I haven't sampled many gardenia scents really, though I treasure my tiny sample of Une Voix Noire a lot.

But... if you're after tahitian gardenia / tiare, you absolutely must try monoi oils by Hei Poa, Elemis or Nars (my favourite). Their heady, luscious scent is absolutely gorgeous, and you only need the smallest amount after a shower to scent your body. That, and Montale's Tiare Intense or Comptoir Sud Pacifique Aloha Tiare for fragrances, though they are more cloying than the oils.
