Anyone tried Ffern?

This company has been popping up on my social media feeds and while it looks like an interesting concept I can't find where anyone has actually tried their scents.

https://ffern.co/

They're not in the directory and a search of these forums turned up nothing. Google is similarly low on hits.

So. . .anyone tried this?

No, have never heard of them

They seem to be a bit 'hippy dippy' producing only 4 fragrances a year revolving around the equinoxes and the fragrances profess to be all 'organic', which normally means they last about an hour.

Seem to be a bit of a cottage industry.

Can't find any prices quoted

Having poked around on their site it looks like each bottle is £50-75 and they ship it with a sample so that you can return the bottle if you don't like it.

Interesting way to get people to give them a try anyway!

What makes you say that organic fragrances don't last? I can't say that I've really paid attention to whether or not my perfumes are organic before

Just putting this here in case anyone stumbles over this thread in future - I did go ahead and bit the bullet and ordered one with the whole "sample first" scheme. And I'm pleasantly surprised!

First of all it's an EDP which means it's got quite a bit more staying power than I think I would have affected. The initial scent is very citrus green with an almost aggressive quality, as it dries I start to smell more and more petitgrain, bergamot with something quite soft and velvety underneath with a hint of herbaceousness - not quite a lavender or rosemary or a cedar but in that vein. It lasts several hours with good sillage and the end notes are more wheat/alfalfa with a mandarin rind and peppercorns. Simultaneously a unique but still very comforting scent. I like that it's a little bit on the heavy side but still feels fresh - perfect for the weather in the UK right now.

I just got the latest release - Summer 19 - into my paws (bottled on the 21st and due to holidays I only managed to pick it up today). So far I'm only trying the sample size (which is a dropper/dab applicator rather than a spray).

And the mid-base notes (labdanum, citrus, are very very similar to spring with some added florals (website says clary sage, which usually comes across more green-earth to my nose and jasmine?) and neroli on the upper notes and maybe a touch of earthy sweetness I'm assuming is coming from the nutmeg. I'm not getting any of the coriander/cinnamon, which is a shame because that sounded amazing. Very nice, but not the instant hit that Spring 19 was. Maybe it will be different when I move to the spray applicator.

I've requested that the Summer release be added to the directory so will post that when it's available.

So I've worn this a handful of times now and despite really wanting to love it - nothing about it says "summer" to me although it is a lovely fragrance. The nutmeg, cinnamon leaf and other spices are much more prevalent in the spray than they were in the dab, but the dry down is a simple woody citrus with just a touch of floral. I've set it aside until perhaps early autumn to see if it grabs me more then.

Still not in the directory. . .
[update! now in the directory! http://www.basenotes.net/ID26159218.html]

On the upside I see that they are selling out within days of the new releases coming available so that's fantastic news! I hope to see them go from strength to strength.

Yes, Ffern has kept popping up on my social media too! But having just checked their website, it seems they are running some strange membership thing... I had to sign up to a waiting list to wait for the Autumn fragrance? I have never heard of anything like this before - they sound very exclusive. I am curious, is that what you had to do for their summer scent?

Yeah, it's new to me too and yes I signed up in advance for their scents and have found it to be really enjoyable. It ships with a sample so you can try it. If you don't like it, you send them back the bottle for a refund. I've never had to send one back yet though!

So the autumn launch arrived yesterday - and wow dramatically different from either of the other two scents. I really dislike the dabber applicator (need to give them this feedback), but it reminds me a bit on the dry down of Duoro which I was wearing yesterday (24 September). I don't get any nutmeg or pepper - I would imagine these come through more in spray form, but there's already a lot of vetiver, oakmoss, woody juniper. Tiniest tiny bit of bergamot. Still pretending I'm debating opening the full bottle.

So I had enough dabbed samples that I just ordered a bunch of empty 3ml spray bottles off amazon and poured this sample into one of those …

WOW! The cinnamon and pepper is warm but not gourmand the bergamot gives a bit of fresh edge but as it dries the heart is smoky cedar with wisps of something earthy. Yes yes yes a thousand times yes.

I signed up to the waiting list and just been offered a place. Anyone else here been getting these and what do you think?

I’m a bit apprehensive as I’ve bought a lot of fragrances recently and wanted to have a break for a couple of months and enjoy what I have. Not sure I want to take a chance on a complete unknown but at the same time am quite intrigued and not want to miss out on something potentially great.

I have 24hrs to decide!

What did you decide in the end?

I ended up joining the ledger based on justfoxie's reviews (and creating a basenotes account too!) and received summer 2020 last week

Hi all! Sorry I've been away from the forums for a while. I've had both Spring and Summer for 2020 and they're mostly evolutions on the 2019 versions. As someone who is still relatively new to perfumes I find following the evolution of a scent by a single nose to be utterly fascinating. They are currently obsessed with a particular Egyptian Basil that first showed up in Winter 20 (my least favourite, but then I'm not a huge fougre fan) and is now making its way into the others. It worked pretty well in Spring, but I'm not really convinced it has a place in Summer. Also the loss of galbanum (rock rose) in Summer kind of breaks my heart a little.

The vetiver they use is stunning and really comes out to play in Autumn. Super curious how that's going to evolve.

For others that have tried it, what do you think?

Oh and the testers are now proper little mini spray bottles. Thank goodness for that.

I am debating getting some Ffern soon. It is always appearing in my social media. Are you still enjoying it?

Yeah, I've got the Summer 20 and Autumn 20, and am gonna get the Winter 21 for sure.

Summer was really different from anything else: a bit spicy and savoury, it reminded me of going on holiday when I was a kid. It was different from anything I'd tried before.
The Autumn one was a massive win for me: light smell of roses, a waft of cognac, and then drying down to this gorgeous smoky smell. The only downside has been not being able to get compliments on it from anyone (because of lockdown and social distancing).

I’ve just received the winter 2020.....it’s surprisingly good, very good! I just signed up on a whim, not expecting much but you get a 1.5 ml sample which is a good size just to see if you like it and if you don’t you just send it back. It’s a very fresh open but sophisticated perfume. I think it skews masculine but that’s fine by me. I can detect, bergamot, pine, peppercorn, woods of some sort all shimmering on a drydown of spicy freshness. I’ll probably keep it as I’m in between perfumes at the moment having had a clear out.....it’s organic, well blended and different!
