I noticed that these two perfumes have never been compared in the fragrance community, although they are similar to my nose. Not 100% similar, but quite similar enough for do not own both at the same time.

Do you find them similar? Which one do you prefer? and why?

(NB: Ambra Aurea to my nose smells slightly better but both are masterpieces)

Own and love Ambre Précieux Ultime. Have tried but don't care for Ambra Aurea. Personally don't find them similar to my nose.

No similarities to my nose either.
AA is a thick perfume that showcases both Ambergris(smells pretty natural also) as well as an Amber resin accord, mostly built out of resins and frankincense. It's salty, smoky, resinous, and sweet.
APU is much lighter, with a bit of an old-school vibe, and some aromatic facets in the opening. It's a light Amber perfume, the amber accord being mostly made up of benzoin, vanilla, and synthetic ambergris.

I much prefer AA over APU. I actually have many others in this genre that I would have above APU. Had APU and sold it.

l tried both of these some years ago, & several years apart, so l haven't done a side by side comparison. But looking back at my reviews, l'd say there are significant differences between the two:

Ambra Aurea was a strong, raw & resinous amber, with that "just dripped out of a pine tree" vibe, becoming slightly more sweet, deep, rich & velvety in the drydown.

APU was much less dense, but perhaps more complex, with notes of lavender, incense, powder, tonka bean, a marine note & a slightly animalic note. lt's quieter though, & faded to a vanillic skin scent much faster than AA.

l liked both, but for me Ambra Aurea had more of the "wow" factor.

Ambra Aurea is more richer and thicker but linear
Ambre Précieux Ultime is more transparent because of its aromatic touch. It changes from beginning to end.

Very good performance for both.

My vote goes to Ambra Aurea because it is my type.

I own and love both. They're not similar to my nose, either - I agree with what's been said above in terms of distinctive differences between them.
