“Put aside the ranger. Become who you were born to be.”

These words come to mind when I smell Land of Warriors by The Vagabond Prince. With its four layers of leather (vegetal, spicy, animalic and smoky) this summons up everything from a Pharaoh's woven leather battle gear to the leather tunics of the bellicose Celtoi– with a little gladiator thrown in for good measure. That said, Land of Warriors opens with a clean, fresh leather scent that toggles between something modern, like Cuiron, and musty old leather books stacked in the farthest reaches of the Bodleian Library. The smoky, animalic notes--–the real warrior bits--–lie far beneath these clean, bookish notes ensuring that the modern-day warrior can wear this to work, do battle, claim victory and not smell as if he missed his–--or her--shower that morning. That''s right; modern day Boudicas will enjoy wearing this scent as well.

Right out the gate I get leather...a smooth polite leather with a dab of sweetness and just a hint of gasoline...if i was going to use a reference to any association with another fragrance, this made me think of Fahrenheit...some greenery floating around...nothing hard core about this...i would say that this is an office friendly leather...a little bit of sharpness that gives my nose a little bit of a tingly feeling...not really getting much in the way of any of the flowers or fruit/citrus that is listed...as it bottoms out it's like someone turned down the treble and turned up the bass...gets a nice woody/castoreum animalic leather thing going on...I think I would enjoy wearing this...

The green herbal-cucumber opening has a touch of earthiness attached to it that makes for an unusual set of top notes. Soon a woodsy compoenent appears, which is developing into a saffron with an a concurrent restrainedly spicy frankincense impression. This is not a ceremonial heavy frankincense, but more of a lighter and approachable type of frankincense -
more - playful jazz than high mass.

The base is mainly characterised by the frankincense continuing but paired with a fair amount of styrax; hints of castoreum contribute to the somewhat sharper character of the combination, which is contributed to by a light white musk and a cistus undercurrent, although is never looses a certain smoothness.

I get moderate sillage, very good projection and a superb twelve hours of longevity.

An unusual concept and a little bit disjoint, not following traditional rules but nonetheless intriguing, although suffering a bit from ingredient overload. Excellent performance. 2.75/5.

Fougere/Chypre--yeah, sure, I get that from the perfumer's notes. But that fougere in the middle is so massive that I'm getting none of the alleged citrus, just a strange hissy whine that's threatening a headache. Time to scrub off and re-review on paper later.

A strange, vaguely unpleasant opening – a sort of fruity, leafy kind of thing with a trace of leather somewhere in the distance. It actually smells a little automotive with some vegetal facets, which is just weird. It also smells more than a tad dated – almost like a late-‘80s mainstream fragrance. But what does intrigue me about it is that for as oddly familiar as it smells (Drakkar Noir? Fahrenheit?), the path it takes to get there seems far less conventional. There's a prominent watery effect in it – like calone without the searing pain. So, although I find it sort of ghastly, for people who love the retro effects of the kind of butch masculines you can find at TJ Maxx, Land of Warriors has some curious appeal to it.
