Houbigant is a brand with a long history – I am blissfully unaware of it. I have no idea what the 1925 version of La Belle Saison smelled like and perhaps that is a good thing. For a perfume about the arrival of spring, the utter plainness of this floral is shocking. One can be generous by calling it ‘abstract', but in reality it is an undistinguished muddle rather than recalling any of the glories of that particular style where a dynamic, intriguing whole was aimed for rather than note distinction. Here we have a pale yet irritatingly persistent floral wash (mainly a lily of the valley synthetic paired with mimosa) with a thudding musk bringing up the rear. It smells like it was made for pennies; it smells like a much-used rag doll being shampooed; it irritates me no end.
