This sampling of the house of House of Sillage, HOS N.001, a sweet and spicy mix that immediately strikes me as a sort of cherried tobacco, an exaggerated variation of Mugler A*Men Pure Havane, though it lacks both cherry and tobacco in the note breakdown. Rather, it's a mix of sweets (vanilla, tonka), spices (cinnamon, ginger, clove), and resins/woods (cedar, mahogany, amber, oud), the overall effective of which is largely more sweet than spicy or woody.

I wouldn't say it's a sweetness overload, however, as it feels reasonably refined, and reminds me also of Acqua di Parma Mandorlo di Sicilia along the lines of smelling like effervescent root beer a bit. There's something nutty, surely the tonka, in the way that that the almond features in the almond-named Mandorlo di Sicilia. The oud feels undetectable, however, as I do not get any of its animalic or medicinal twinges when wearing, and the spices are relatively tame–neither the cinnamon nor ginger nor clove stand out very much, though I could imagine each being part of the mix.

Overall, HOS N.001 is easy to wear for fans of sweet fragrances like me, I imagine, and is reasonably versatile to that effect in that it's not so heavy to be overbearing on a summer evening but certainly strong enough for the winter cold. And while some might regard it as masculine, I could see it being unisex, particularly given many of its foody notes .

Sold at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's, and the house site, HOS N.001 retails for $285 for 75ml, though it's currently on sale on the house site for $213.75, though I've recently seen it as low as $142.50 (50% off). At the lowest price (under $2/ml), it's quite a good deal, albeit a bit more of a stretch at retail.

For me, personally, it's a bit more of a “like” than a “love” and I feel it's well-executed overall but a couple notches below Mugler Pure Havane, which it initially reminded me of, albeit comparable to Acqua di Parma Mandorlo di Sicilia, which might be a better analogy for what it does best, the sort of unrelenting, nutty, almost candied sweetness.

House of Sillage HOS N.001 (2016) is the first of 4 numbered masculine releases made by perfumer Mark Buxton for the high-end luxury brand. This scent is supposed to scream refinement, performance, quality, and prestige, but all I manage to get from it is cough syrup and Christmas trees, which is the furthest thing from that. Not to be rude, but this is another scent that tries to claim oud but has not a single iota of oud in it whatsoever, although they did manage to copy the cherry cola vibe of Yves Saint Laurent M7 (2002) but replace the cola with Ricola, if that counts. The bottle is really cool and thick, with an intersting push-button release mechanism for the spray cover, which operates like a lighter in some ways, but I don't know if that qualifies the price tag.

The opening of HOS N.001 is pure Robitussin cherry cough syrup, shocking as that may seem, followed by some cinnamon of the Christmas wreath variety, and a bit of orange. The heart of tonka, ginger, and clove continues the Christmas theme, and soon we're smelling more like a Christmas tree than a wreath, thanks to a piney wood note creeping in from the base. Vanilla and amber try their best to smooth this down, but the cedar note mixing with other woods and clove keep the vibe up and just ruins this for me. Wear time is long at 10 hours but projection doesn't scream, which is a good thing in this scenario. If you find this fragrance enjoyable, your best bet would be to wear it in winter and at home, cozied up to a fireplace or with a loved one, because one positive point about HOS N.001 is that is comes across cuddly.

House of Sillage has some interesting things in this numbered masculine line, and some high-quality alternatives to designer fare, but this scent isn't really one of them. I mean, if you want to spend almost $300 to smell like something you could buy in an aerosol can around the holidays for $5, then go right ahead, but I'm not going to pretend this is some elegant and refined oriental oud hybrid take worth any effort to acquire. Completists looking to have the entire numbered set by the house may consider getting HOS N.001, but outside that, I can't see when someone would unironically want to smell like cough syrup, cloves, and Christmas, which itself sounds like a set up for a really bad Billy Bob Thorton comedy. Thumbs down.

This is a fabulous masculine that works on my femme skin. Candied wood. Bakery sweet. Spicy. Boozy vanilla. Smoked wood. Aromatic. Has depth.

The ingredients seem to show themselves one at a time, one after another. After settling, it is one big orchestra of oriental flavor. Overall it is very strong. A little goes a long way. Too expensive for my bank but, I'll continue to enjoy my sample until it's gone. Two thumbs up!

Five stars for the bottle and packaging presentation. Love the way you push a button and the nozzle protector slides away. Spicy and sweet. The ginger, oud and clove dominate for the first 10-20 minutes. After an hour or so, the amber and cinnamon notes are there, giving it a very intense heart. Two hour out and the vanilla keeps it very creamy and rich. It has absolutely incredible longevity, 12 hours and I'm still getting a whiff every now and then. Sillage is very good, and never cloying. Top notch.
