Whoa! What's the story on "Ermenegildo Zegna Uomo" for Men Eau de Toilette Spray ? This is to say....

Hi all, I was reading a thread on Facebook "Vintage Perfume" Group regarding "Summer Fragrances" choices. I though about my wearing/enjoying "Ermenegildo Zegna Uomo" for Men Eau de Toilette Spray (which I wore the other day and VERY much enjoyed). If memory serves, I was "gifted" this bottle years ago from an friend who worked in a "Thrift Shop". My being a curious Cat, I wondered what the going price was for a bottle of "Uomo". I did a quick check and WOW! I mean, what's the deal ? Seventy two dollars plus shipping (on Amazon) for a ONE ounce bottle ? One hundred dollars for a 1.7 oz. bottle. Also listed was a "Uomo" Holiday Gift Set for one HUNDRED seventy dollars! Yikes! Now, I very much enjoyed wearing "Uomo" as it is a lovely, fresh Summer type Fragrance but wow, the current price of "Uomo" caught me completely off guard. What am I missing ? Is "Uomo" considered rare/discontinued or something else ? I guess I should consider my lucky to own a mostly full 3.4 oz. bottle of "Uomo". At any rate, I'm just curious about the current prices. Thanks.

Can't recall what I paid for the 100ml size when it first launched, but don't think it was expensive.

I've gotten good performance from these freshies I own that are moderately priced.

I'm sure I left some out, but these are the ones I thought of off the top of my head.

The last six cost a little more but are worth it in my opinion.

Bentley For Men Silverlake
Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Eau Intense
Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Forever
Missoni Wave
Versace Man Eau Fraiche
Versace Pour Homme
YSL Y Eau Fraiche
Rochas Moustache EDT
Armaf Sillage

Tom Ford Grey Vetiver

Dior Eau Sauvage Cologne
Guerlain L'Homme Ideal Cologne

Hi FoxH,

Nice list of "Freshies", thanks for sharing. Of your list, I have Dolce & Gabbana Lite Blue which I think quite nice. I have 2012 "Eau Sauvage Parfum" and (recently purchased) 2017 "Eau Sauvage Parfum". In addition, I also have Guerlain "Homme", Terre D'Hermes, YSL "Y" and lots of Caron. Ooh FoxH, I'm really curious about Rochas "Moustache" . Is "Moustache" in any way unique/different than the usual suspects ? Worth buying ? Thanks.

I also don't understand what's going on with Uomo. First of all, nice as it is, it is absolutely not worth current ebay prices. 4 or 3 years ago it was available from every discounter in a range from $10 to $20 bucks and nobody wanted it. I remember seeing shelves of Uomo and stores couldn't get rid of them. Then it disappeared just as quickly and Zegna started selling the repackaged and redesigned bottles that were easily available and at one point got rather inexpensive as well. And then it disappeared again. Same for Z (which IMO was not worth even $20 bucks when it hit discounters). Somehow, Forte Intenso is still widely available and still cheap as chips, I picked up a 1.7 oz bottle at Burlington for about $17 just last month.

Ha, interesting maksidrom. Thank you for responding to my thread. Yes indeed, the current prices on "Uomo" are NUTZ! That being said, I'm glad that I do own a 3.4 oz. bottle of "Uomo" since I DO like it! I suspect "Uomo" will be one of a few "Dumb Reach" Fragrances (if Summer ever arrives in Maine) this year that I'll reach for often.

Wow, I didn't realize it was that inexpensive at one time.

In my opinion, it's definitely worth getting Rochas Moustache EDT and the EDP.

The EDT is the sharp, bright citrus one and the EDP is a completely different fragrance.

The EDT is perfect for spring & summer days. It's been around since 1949 and it really is a classic scent worth getting.

It's also different enough from the modern fresh scents to stand on its own in that regard.

Here's a description of it I copy & pasted:

Moustache Original 1949 is announced as a contemporary version of the original aromatic composition; reportedly relaunched using the original formula for the lovers of vintage fragrances. Citrus notes from Calabria open the scent in a fresh and vivid way. Lavender in the heart is positioned against a classic chypre base.

Don't remember where I sampled Uomo but first buy was on Fnet well under 10 years back and it was about $30 for a 3.4 oz fragrance, shower gel, and aftershave set. Like Foxhound regularly saw it at TJM for $25 or so - sometimes for a 1.7 sometimes 3.4 - and it would be on clearance for less. Best deal I ever got was $11 for a 3.4 but got several at 15 or 16. Also got Z and Intenso in clearance under $20, but don't like either of those as much. I wish I had bought a few more of those < 20 ones that I saw and passed on.....

To your question, Estee Lauder took over Zegna over 10 years ago, and announced they were ending deals with Donna Karan, Hilfiger, Zegna, and Michael Kors. Someone else will sign a new deal with those to make the product and may or may not change it at the time. The belief is that the designer lines were discod so prices shoot up. The Integrity and many of the Essenze were discod already... They put out some good stuff but seem to lose momentum with too short or product cycles (and high prices for some IMO but many are not bothered by that...). To really confuse things I saw that as part of the Estee Lauder purchase of Tom Ford they are assigning the clothing line under Zegna control - they made the suits already, not sure on shirts etc. But it seemed that the fragrance and cosmetic products were staying under Lauder not Zegna. I could kind of see them zapping Zegna and saying here manage Ford fragrance as it presumably makes way more $$$..... but nothing official on that being the case. Anyway, throw around the disco word and auction and grey market sites start jacking up prices even if nothing wil sell. The last 3.4 I bought was in the last year for about $30, it's still possible to find a deal just getting very unlikely....

The story is that it's discontinued. The easiest way to make people want something is to tell them they can't have it.
There's a reason it sold poorly when it was available. It's not bad, but not being bad doesn't mean it's good, or even great.

If Zegna Uomo was still available, it would still be selling poorly.

It's not bad, but even for $30, I'd pass.

Hi FOXH,

Thank you Sir for replying to my inquiry. I've been interested in "Moustache" for a long time and I think (with you help/comment) "Moustache" will be a future purchase for sure. Question for me is, which one ? EdP or EdT ? Thank FOX.

If you can do it go ahead and get both as it's worth it to own both of them. Great quality/quantity to cost ratio as well. They are two entirely different fragrances and are similar in name only. I enjoy owning and wearing both of them and you have completely different wearing experiences with each of them.

Here are a couple of links to some well written reviews of both fragrances:

Perfect example of this is the Mugler Pure line. When I got into fragrances in about 2014, Pure Malt and Pure Havane were selling for mega bucks as they were discontinued. Then they were re-released and could be found anywhere for around £48 here in UK. Even on sale they weren't shifting many at the end. Now they are gone again (probably for good this time), the prices are skyrocketing again!

I think this fragrance might still be in production, SixCats. It's just been rebranded/rebottled (relatively recently as well).

I like Zegna as a house, they've made some excellent masculine fragrances, but their naming doesn't help classifying/categorising their fragrances. I might be wrong but I think they've made a few "Uomo" fragrances; some of them are different scents, whereas some are rebrandings of what already exists.

I actually thought the Uomo you are referring to was pretty good, but one of the weaker ones from the house. It reminds me very much of the late 2000s, when this metallic iris/violet trend was ubiquitous in all sorts of younger men's products. I didn't like it then and although time has softened my stance slightly, I don't think it's particularly nice now, either.

I would recommend (if you can) going for the more recent release "Zegna Energy". It's stronger, more pleasant to my nose, fresh and masculine but with real...energy.

Hi slpfrsly,

Thanks for your thoughts/comments and recommendation regarding Zegna. Honestly, I don't even recall when/where/how I acquired this 3.4 oz. bottle of "Uomo". How odd is that ? Wait wait! Ya know what, I bet I purchased Zegna (on the cheap) a few years ago at T.J. Maxx and/or Marshalls (or perhaps even a well know "Salvage" Store here in Maine). That's got to be it, I'm almost certain! Well, sorry to hear you don't like this Zegna slpfrsly. Truth be told, "Uomo" is not my usual/normal worn type of Fragrance however, I find Zegna to be a perfect "dumb reach" Freshie to over spray for Summer lol. Heck, I more than likely paid less than fifteen dollars for this big 3.4 bottle of Zegna so, I really can't complain, especially now that the price for Zegna is on the rise and (as I mentioned) I am rather enjoying the likes of Zegna.
