Jamie- thanx! It wasn't much of a picture anyway. I have these flowers in the garden and they make my life more pleasant every summer. I even made bases-white lily and red oriental lily.

I never use lily to mean lily of the valley. I refer to it as lily of the valley or muguet. To me lily is this:

In terms of chemicals, they are often abbreviated names and/or often form part of bases for EITHER lily of the valley OR actual lily (as pictured).
When I think of Lily, I think of the same thing. I wished there were absolutes of Casablanca lilies and the like but there is not. Not much is discussed about those lily fragrances. Very few scents with them highlighted as well. I could be wrong?

@jfrater it would be nice if you could whip up a Casablanca Lily base, ahem 🤣🤣🤣

One day I definitely will! If they are the same as ours here it is my favourite flower and is the smell of Christmas for me as they bloom from November (our summertime).

How strange it must be to be in the Southern Hemisphere.

Has anyone tried to replicate the specific smell of Easter Lily? this variety seems cooler and more solar, and much less animalic. I tried once and it was not very convincing..

I love lily fragrances, but they don't seem to be very popular!

To me it's the nostalgic fragrance of funerals and memorial services !

Yes funerals, definitely associate people with the scents of oriental lilies and narcissus. My iconic Stereo Love narcissus soliflore fragrance according to many people smells of funerals and death.

I'm way less confused about the olfactory difference between muguet and lily than I am the difference between lily and narcissus. What do people perceive the difference to be in terms of odour profile and materials used? I even grew a range of highly scented narcissi this spring specifically to study. Some varieties reminded me strongly of ylang III, others very barnyardy, with PCPA quite prominent. Some were more redolent of hyacinth. In trying to recreate the aroma I kept tying myself up in knots, wondering if I was veering more towards lily or more narcissus.

Back to muguet, I like the idea of creating a muguet-centred fragrance that a man can wear. As well as a range of individual muguet materials, I have Jamie's Coroliane base, which is gorgeous. I would use this as a starting point, perhaps alongside lavender absolute.

A lily that's suitable for men might be a little more tricky...

Nautica Voyage is very prominently muguet from big doses of lilial (who knows what that's been replaced with), bourgeonal, florhydral. These are modified by undecavertol, cyclogalbanate, and cis-3-hexenol to go from muguet to cucumber (bourgeonal and florhydral already waver between muguet and cucumber).

I felt the same way when I lived in the UK and had to suffer winter Christmastimes :) Weirdest for us is the hot roasted meats on Christmas day in the middle of 30 centigrade days :)

I thought we had discussed this partially before, but now I can't find it.

But it was said that if we use French vocabulary, which we admittedly use a large amount. Then Muguet is lily of the valley and Lys is lily. There are some demo formulas and perfumes that are titled Lys.

And because Lily is English and not French, it's really more of a blanket bucket term referring to an area of odors and materials than anything specific.

After all, ginger lilies use many of the materials in common but aren't lilies either :p
