This year wasn’t very good in terms of sampling new perfumes or discovering things. I have a long list that I slowly keep chipping away at, but the mood since February just wasn’t right, plus for two months I was nearly constantly sick and could barely smell a thing. Hopefully the other half of 2022 has some good perfumes in store for me to explore. 🤞

After several years in perfume limbo - just wearing scents that I already owned - my interest picked up again a few months ago. Of the scents that I've sampled recently the standouts for me have been:

Nishane Ani - the love child of Vanille Tonka and Musc Ravageur?
Al Haramain Amber Oud Rouge - loved this scent but not sure I'd buy it. It was overwhelming to wear even in tiny amounts

Ambre Supreme and Escale en Indonesie, both by Les Indemodables.

I've been pretty bitter and disappointed when it comes to most of the releases I've sniffed over the last decade, but those two aforementioned releases by Les Indemodables have convinced me that perfumery isn't quite dead. Both fragrances contain lots of expensive materials, including an overdose of natural ambergris, more than I've smelled in any other fragrance (1000+ and counting). They're magical to say the least.

Escale en Indonesie is casual, masculine-leaning, and very affordable, while Ambre Supreme is chic and unisex but pretty damn expensive per ml. They're both excellent and worth every penny.

This year has been one of the best years in my fragrance journey so far (Which was a pleasant surprise given I've been somewhat jaded with the perfume industry for the past couple of years).

Of note:

• I finally committed to smelling all the things I’ve wanted to over the years, so I bought enough vintage miniatures, samples and decants to sink a small boat.

Equipage (Hermes) is a fragrance I’ve always liked and admired, I’ve owned a vintage bottle for years. But there’s something in it that just rubbed me wrong and put me off.
I stumbled upon the 2nd bottle version, and then the current version, and I’m head over heals.
So much so… I’m inclined to say it’s my new favorite fragrance. Ellena’s reformulation(s?) of it are absolutely magnificent.

• Ditto for Equipage Geranium (Hermes).
I slightly prefer the original but this stuff is unbelievable. I’d even say it’s technically the better fragrance of the 2, and in my opinion Ellena’s best fragrance. Yep, I said it. JCE’s best work.

• I came to the realization that the only citrus summer “freshie“ I need or want is Eau Sauvage edt (Dior).

• I also came to the realization that Carnal Flower (Malle) is the most beautiful floral fragrance I’ve ever smelled.
Bravo Dominique Ropion. Bravo.

•2 fragrances I didn’t particularly like at all when previously smelling them, I bought samples and forced myself to spend time with and try to understand them. They clicked, and now I’m crazy about them and thrilled to have full bottles of both.
Monsieur (Malle)
•Geranium Pour Monsieur (Malle)

Jacomo de Jacomo (vintage). Niche before there was niche. A goth fougere. What a unique, brilliant, mischievous thing this is.

•Dominque Ropion is my runaway MVP of the year.
Along with Geranium Pour Monsieur & Carnal Flower, I also got full bottles of Cologne Indelebile & Costume National Homme.
4 fragrances from 1 perfumer, in 1 year, that absolutely knocked my socks off.
(EDIT: Also, earlier this year I found a nos 200ml bottle of La Nuit De L’homme, original 1st formulation, for $90. Also Ropion. That makes 5 Ropions in 1 year).

Ive acquired a number of other exceptional bottles this year, but these were the most notable highlights of my year in perfumes.

Absolutely fresh obsession and I have to do more testing to confirm, but I’m quite stunned by Kintsugi by Masque Milano. Found a completely forgotten og sample (with a typo in the name!) and been wearing it, trying it, smelling it… it’s a fantastic faux-chypre. Or leathery fruitchouli if you will. This is the second Masque Milano perfume I find stunning and I am almost afraid to test the rest of their line *cries in Euros*
