I'm considering purchasing a full bottle of vintage Eau Sauvage, and would like some advice from those with experience purchasing this. On Ebay, I'm finding 3.4 ounce splash bottles with the brown and red packaging. Prices are rought $165 to $200. Did they make a vintage splash Eau Sauvage in a 3.4 oz size? I thought vintages usually come in 4 oz. bottles. Thank you.

They did make a 100ml/3.4oz. I have a few 100ml vintage sprays(brown & red packaging).
They came in all kinds of sizes, even oddball ones like 112ml. You have to remember, that was THE most popular men’s fragrance for a while, especially in France. And when a fragrance is really popular like that, they’ll market the hell out of it and do all types of variations on bottles, sizes, gift sets, etc.

If you decide you want a vintage spray version, feel free to shoot me a dm. I’d be willing to part with one of my backups for a fair price.
(I’m planning on listing a number of fragrances on basenotes this week in the BN marketplace, you’re welcome to wait & do it through the marketplace listing as well if you prefer).

Gosh, I'm not so familiar with fluid ounces as I am with good old metric ml!

AFAIK the sizes of vintage Eau Sauvage in Aftershave and Eau de Toilette were 58ml, 112ml and 224ml. Which translates to 1.9, 3.4 and 7.5 fluid ounces. At what date they switched to 50, 100 and 200ml I'm unsure, I think at some point in the 80's.

Those odd sizes, 58, 112 and 224ml are a pretty sure sign of vintage ones and are generally the sizes used pre 1980 or early 80's.

Another visual clue that might be helpful in identifying older vintage Eau Sauvage Eau de Toilette is the wording in the red box on the box itself. If it says 'Eau de Toilette' it's a later one if it says 'Pour Homme, For Men' it's an earlier one.

Here's my 112ml, 3.4 fluid ounce Eau de Toilette from 1970.

I love my contemporary Eau Sauvage EdT. What are the differences between it and vintage versions?
I have current production Eau Sauvage Eau de Toilette and Aftershave as well as the early vintage versions. Unfortunately since I got the vintage versions I rarely use the current ones!

It's the same difference (or very similar) that you'll find with most 1970/80's vintage versions versus the current production versions, namely a deeper, richer, mossier intensity.

It is largely the Oakmoss dosing, the true Rosemary presented and dimensional Bergamot in Vintage.
The Contemporary carries a Calonic accord that appeals to current tastes.

Regarding differences between vintage and current formulations: the current formulation shows to my nose a significant muguet (lily of the valley) note in the base, which is/was totally non-existent in vintage formulations. The only florals / floral notes used in the vintage were jasmine, neroli/orange flower, rose, clove/carnation and orris. (I didn't notice any calone however.) - I could tolerate the current version if there wasn't this awful superfluous lily of the valley turned this former classic into something soapy and weird.

Thank you for your responses!

I'm pretty calone-sensitive and I don't detect any at all in my current EdT. If it's there? well done guys! I don't smell it :)

I'm quite sure that there's even in current formulations no Calone. However, it's possible that people confuse Calone and Helional. Helional has been an integral, although minor part of the vintage. In combination with Hedione (and Amyl-/Hexylcinnamal) it can produce a somewhat watery-floral effect. Since the dosage of Hedione and Helional apparently has been increased in the years, ES shows this note rather prominently now. In this regard, ES went closer in the direction of Diorella.
