Vintage Aramis by Aramis question

I've seen a couple different bottle designs of Aramis by Aramis "cologne" (not the EdT) - one has the Aramis label with a blue background and clear bottle, and the other has it with the brown background and a frosted glass section in the middle of the bottle. Which one is the older version? Any differences between the two? Thanks!

i think the frosted glass version was older and from the 60's 70's . there was a few different bottles . the brown gold packaging screams 70's

Thanks. Although, I still feel confused. And Jean-Ste, your bottle says, "Eau de Cologne", which I haven't seen before - the ones I've seen just say, "Cologne". Interesting.

Maybe my bottle was destined to the European market ? I say that because there's no indication of US fluid ounces. I also have an after-shave bottle which is identical to this one; it says "after shave 240 cc 240 ml". If you want, I can put a picture.

As far as I know the US market bottles that are vintage have Cologne on them, the label is blue-ish. The letter spacing is different from current bottles. The European bottles that are vintage have Eau de Cologne on them and again the label is blue-ish. My gift set has bottles that have frosted glass panels, but I think that's just a fancy bottle for Christmas gifts - I reckon mine dates to the mid-80's. I've got other bottles both US and European like yours with the same box and labels. I think that is 70's or 80's standard packaging.

Thanks, Jean-Ste and Tristan45.

Very interesting ! Bottles looked different from what I've seen so far.
Yeah, I don't recall seeing any like that, either, but all the ads c.1964 look like that, so I don't think it was just an artist's concept prior to seeing an actual bottle.

I don't know if "Cologne" and "Eau de cologne" mean the same thing. It's my understanding that "Cologne" was the word for men perfumes in the US in the past.
"Eau de cologne" in France (in Europe ) means a certain concentration of perfume, lower than the one of "Eau de toilette" and "Eau de parfum". "Cologne", as a single word, to my knowledge, has never been used in Europe to designate a perfume.

All interesting stuff. I’ve decided to take a chance on a blue labeled “cologne” bottle. I’ll be interested to see how it compares to the bottle I have that’s a 5 or 6 year old current version (which I totally dig, BTW).

Could you please post a picture of the bottle when you get it ? I'm wondering how the "blue labeled cologne" looks like...thanks !

I think what you should find is that although the top notes may be slightly muted owing to the bottle's age, the largest change is the staying power/grip on the ingredients from the oakmoss, which is an effect that the current version with treemoss or other synthetic mosses can't quite pull off....

I look forward to comparing the vintage bottle that is en route to the current version (from about 5 years ago) that I have. In terms of "staying power", I get all day performance with the current version - no worries there for me.

I'll update once I get a chance to A/B them.

The vintage Aramis arrived yesterday. Here are some photos. And one of the pics has the current version EdT for a visual comparison (about a 5 year old bottle -note the juice color difference).

I haven't had a chance to give them a good A/B test drive; but I did give the vintage cologne a brief wear early this morning to get an initial impression. The difference thus far is only in the opening, meaning it isn't harsh like the current version, but the long dry down seems to be the same for both. But that's only an initial impression.

Thank you for the pictures, Aero58 ! I didn't compare the dry-down of both (vintage and current), but I too think that the opening of the current is very harsh VS the vintage is soft, round, and very nice.

With Aramis, the darker the liquid, the better. I have a 360ml, very rare and nearly impossible to find now decanter (a lifetime supply) that’s almost full which smells phenomenal. There’s zero degradation of any notes. Surprisingly with long lasting top notes so, vintage Aramis ages well.

My guesstimation is that it’s from the very early 1970’s before any slight reformulations took place. I have a few other miniature 15ml flacons from the 1980’s and there’s a significant difference in terms of smell ‘and’ color. Yes, it’s still Aramis but much brighter in feel where the heavy handed castoreum in the original juice has been reduced and replaced with far more musk in lieu. Also, the color of the liquid is a deep piss yellow color as opposed to the deep reddish-brown of the original. You can just feel how heavy the myrrh and castoreum is in the original and it’s intoxicating to say the least! This is a fantastic perfume for Men that’s even more fun to actually wear. Remember… the darker the juice, the better.
