I bet I'd love that. Too bad it's virtually impossible to find.

I really wanted to sync up in vetiver today, but when I looked at my choices, everything seemed too raw, too brash, too... big. I seem to have collected mostly rooty vetivers, and I wanted something lighter, more carefree. Then I noticed I hadn't worn this for almost a year; oh well, when in doubt, go with the classics, right?

Guerlain Vetiver (1960)

Does anyone know whether Hermes ever made a pure vetiver scent, something other than their Bel Ami Vetiver/Vetiver Tonka/Terre Vetiver? The only one of those that I like is the Bel Ami.
Not aware of another vetiver by Hermes, but they should totally do one- maybe a light and breezy type, stick it in the un Jardin series? Or the colored bottle Eau series (or whatever the series is called with Eau d’Orange Verte).

Have you tried Diptyque’s Vetyverio? I’ve only sprayed at the store, but it seemed like a light and airy vetiver that might work on days when the gnarly vetivers are too much. From my collection, this is how I use Escentric 03, though it’s got a couple odd notes mixed in (weirdly sour citrus & slightly funky leather, which in combination with the darker vetiver make me think of a Corona with lime), so might not be to everyone’s taste.

Syncing with that old standby: Chanel Sycomore EDP. Wearing this back to back with Paris-Edimbourg reaaaaallly makes me wish they’d do an EDP strength version of Edimbourg. Sycomore sits at the perfect volume for me, and lasts all day. Still one of my all time favorites.

How's that one, Andy?
First time I tried it, I thought... meh... nice but light. And I have to say that this one... really scratches my itch after a few wearing. The juniper is light but adds that little 'zing' I love. Kind of a less creamy, vetiver-centric Frapin L'Humaniste... if that makes sense. I might go for a full bottle, because it's really a mood lifter.

TdH EI Vetiver is the 'purest' vetiver Hermes ever did. I am not a fan of Vetiver Tonka (too mainstream for my tastes), and have my TdH EI Vetiver for sale, because I find it unbalanced. That said, like you I own and love Bel-Ami Vetiver, where I find the extra vetiver shot to perfect balance the original Bel-Ami (one of the rare occurences where I prefer the flanker to the original).

I agree, Vetyverio is veeeery nice. Both the EDT, which is light, citrus-y, ethereal, and perfectly blended, ideal for warmer days, as well as the EDP, which is slightly rootier, with a beautiful supporting rose (rare in a vetiver fragrance), perfect for colder days.

I like Escentric 03 but find it a bit odd indeed, and more grapefruit forward than vetiver. That said, layered with Moelcule 03, it become a very nice composition.
OJ Zizan, also by Geza Schoen, wasn't to my taste, though. Much too sharp/bitter in the first couple of hours. Sold it.

Well, that sounds promising! And I generally like Diptyques, so I'll tee that one up as a sample soon. Thanks, guys.

I tried their Escale en Haiti as part of the Indemodables discovery set, and had a similar reaction, though I don't know L'Humaniste. All those Indemodables seem very M.O.R. and overpriced to me, and there's some kind of house base that feels boring, but on re-trying the EEH was pretty charming, buoyant and cheerful. In fact, I might give it another go today after my Guerlain wears off.

I love this idea. I'd really like to see Hermes tackle a pure vetiver, and rooty/earthy would not be their style. I'd be very happy if it was part of the Eau series (I like them more than the Jardin series). Christine Nagel could probably do a hell of a vetiver.

Post=post sync with

Viaggio d'Africa by Pal Zileri
Very dry tonka-forward on my skin, with an earthy vetiver in the base, delivering an overall impression of coffee.
Last wearing of this discontinued rarity for me, before joing others in my 'for sale' box, since coffee is not really something I dig, but I see that one as an improvement over Vetiver Tonka by Hermes.

Pre-syncing with

Wonderoud by Comme des Garcons
Very noticeable vetiver, interplaying with woods and spices. Call it synthetic if you wish. I personally prefer to call it a cuddly comfort fragrance.

How do you enjoy this one compared to Wonderwood? (I've only tried the latter.)

Visited the Macy's counter tonight and foolishly sprayed some Sauvage Elixir on the back of my hand. Really, really not my thing. Smells like shower gel mixed with bath salts (the stimulant). Tried to scrub it off; no dice.

At least I'm technically pre-synced, as this supposedly has "haitian vetiver" in the base. Not that I can smell anything over the monstrous stew of ambrox + patchouli + industrial runoff that's suffocating my will to live. Live and learn, I suppose.
