Thanks for that, and welcome, bootylicious!

Kind of odd to see Aventus so far down the list given the fanaticism of its devotés.

Yep. It certainly does have a devoted fan base, but many have negatively reviewed it for its batch irregularity and/or price range, and these criticisms have negatively impacted the fragrance's overall rating.

Thanks for sharing and congratulations for such an impressive and rewarding first post. Truly fascinating to see such an extensive, yet also concisely summarized overview regarding the ratings, popularities and reviews of not just 40 of the BN favorites, but in their vast majority also great fragrance classics altogether.

Great job, thanks! By the way I'm quite suprised by the rankings, I thought the most ever were only Creed's/Bleu de Chanel's and that stuff...

Welcome Bootylicious - but cannot be right - Aventus cannot be anything but # 1 - fans of this will explain further on it's invincibility...But I'm glad to see my beloved Eau Sauvage, Antaeus & few other goodies to be in your top 40 list!!!

Welcome to BN thanks for the work!

One observation- this top 40 most reviewed list skews heavily toward scents marketed to men/ unisex probably due to the fact that there are proportionally high number of active male members compared to female and thus more male reviewers (?). It's just an observation and no political agenda here :).

This list is very helpful, thanks for the post!

Hell of a job. Thanks.

You're all welcome. After all, it's this community of reviewers that has made these lists possible in the first place. I should be thanking you guys. Thanks guys! :^D

Nice post and good work. Im a little surprised not to see a few more of the top women's scents there.

[Regarding the former mixed top 40 most reviewed fragrances list] The top 40 most reviewed fragrances on basenotes all have at least 176 total reviews. It is a little surprising that so few female fragrances have achieved this number of reviews, but that is the reason so few are found on this list.

Everyone's favorite cannot be #1 and the overall ratings consider all the reviews listed on Basenotes, many of which are negative and neutral.

I have yet to sample this fragrance myself, but judging by the fanatical following this fragrance leads, this one must be something special.

Glad to see your other favorites rated so highly on the list.

[Regarding the former mixed top 40 most reviewed fragrances list] Yes, there is definitely a masculine bias in the list, probably due to the fact that male reviewers make up the majority of the review pool (an assumption) and that they are mostly interested in reviewing fragrances that they themselves would likely wear (also an assumption).

I chose to include only the top 40 most reviewed fragrances for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because I had to limit the list in some way and I assumed that the most reviewed fragrances would be the ones people here on Basenotes would be most interested in. And secondly, because fragrances having a greater number of reviews provide a more settled overall rating that is less likely to fluctuate over time.

Glad to hear that there was no political agenda behind your commentary. I dislike how everything is one big gender war nowadays. I certainly didn't engineer the list with the intention of showing more masculine fragrances nor did I have the intention of making it appear like masculine fragrances are in some way better than feminine fragrances.

But you do have a point, the list does leave a lot to be desired from more rounded and/or feminine orientated fragrance enthusiasts. I'd be happy to create separate lists for everyone that is interested in seeing them.

How is the overall number calculated?

I'd rather not divulge the specifics of the calculations at this point in time.

Nice work, bootylicious! But without explaining how the overall rating is derived at it becomes somewhat meaningless to some of your audience. Is there a certain weightage assigned to negative reviews?

Perhaps you could produce a table of fragrances listed by rating BUT ignoring the gender marketing? That would be interesting. Or perhaps there's another way to even out the playing field so that the male-marketed fragrances don't dominate? In any case, it would be great to see Sycomore, Jicky, Cuir de Russie considered alongside all the rest.

Thanks Diamondflame. With regards to review weightings, each positive, neutral and negative review is worth 2, 1, and 0 points respectively.

Three separate lists for masculine, unisex and feminine fragrances have been created, and results for Sycomore, Jicky, and Cuir de Russie are all included. The overall ratings can be compared against those in different lists.

Gosh, well done and thanks !

You're very welcome :^D
