The elusive Chanel no. 9

Basenoters, perhaps you can help me.

My grandmother used to wear something called "Chanel no. 9." I am 100% sure it is NOT Chanel no. 19, or even Chanel no. 5. Apparently, according to my father who purchased the bottle for her in the 70s, the fragrance DID exist, but was discontinued.

Can someone help me verify this? I've searched online (Google, university library databases, even eBay), and this scent is nearly non-existent. But I am so sure no. 9 has been and is a Chanel creation.

Am I hallucinating, did this scent just change its name, or has no. 9 really never existed? And if it has, would anyone have any remote idea as to where I can get my hands on a bottle?

I do not believe such a scent existed, could it have been the elusive 18? As a multiple of nine, an easy mistake? (I am not accusing you of making a mistake, just musing 'aloud')
Or 22?

What did it smell like? Did she ever get it in a cannister; what color was that?

You might ask the Chanel official site!

Ernest Beaux made a Mademoiselle No1 and a Mademoiselle No2 in the forties.

Paradelle- I am currently reading The Secret of Chanel No. 5 By Tilar J. Mazzeo .
In Chapter 10 - there is a small mention of the other Chanel perfumes . I bought the book on my iPod Touch as a iBook so I cannot be sure if the page nos. correspond to the actually paper book pages .

On Page 403 ( on my iBook ) of Chapter 10, direct quote-

"Also offered for sale were the perfumes Chanel No.7. Chanel No.9, Chanel No. 11 and Chanel No.22. The prices ranged by size from a modestly expensive $4.50 to an astonishingly $175 for an impressively large bottle, the modern day equivalent of from $50 to nearly two thousand. "

Thank goodness. I knew I wasn't dreaming this! I wish so bad I can get my hands on a bottle. My memory is murky, but I remember how my grandmother always smelled very "Chanel-esque," (it was the aldehydes) and I knew for the life of me it wasn't the lucrative Chanel no. 5. (Though, most classic Chanels now bring about this nostalgia.)

Thanks much for sharing this!

Are you sure it was not Cadolle No9?

Sadly discontinued but still around up to the early 00s.

I know this is an old thread, but I wore Chanel No. 9 for years. I loved it. It was my signature scent. I don't remember why or exactly when I stopped wearing it, but it was definitely from the late 70s to at least the early 80s. I actually found this thread when I was trying to find out if they still make it. Very sad to find out that they don't. Maybe we could start a comeback campaign. :)

Can someone describe how it smelled, I'm very curious.

Also, is there a list of notes to be found?

Thanks

This reminds me of Caron Tabac Noir, Tabac Blond is famous but the former is a mystery. It is mentioned in my Caron book, no photos so was it never actually released or very limited? Many have asked but no real answer.

I strongly agree we should petition to get it back...My G/F told me that she would die to have it so I have been going threw great lengths to get a bottle by Christmas. I have already emailed Chanel.com and asked them to bring it back or have a custom bottle made. What else do we gotta do to make this happen?
