As an intro for new members, here are some simple scent compositions from older threads. If there is a composition you would like to add, please contact me. Compositions should be short, tailored to the beginner, and use readily available and relatively inexpensive ingredients.

The previous thread devolved into chitchat and requests for formulae critiques, which was not the intended purpose, so I have made this a locked thread. I have saved the chitchat in a thread called "Chitchat From the Simple DIY perfume formulas thread" and I put Casper_Grassy's essay on getting started in DIY in its own thread.

Please note that serious perfumers work by weight and not drops. You should invest in a scale that is accurate to .001 grams or better as soon as you are able.

Here are links to threads presenting & discussing very simple complete perfume formulas with as few as eight lines (ingredients). These will be extremely helpful for novices to assemble, test, and analyze. They can also post their observations, questions, and comments in the original threads to receive advice, input, and sources further fruitful discussion.

Barnyard-y white floral 8 liner

Para-cresyl phenyl acetate 1
Musk Ketone 73
Magnolys E (Firm) 206
Ethyl Maltol 24
Cetylia Base 62
Anisyl Acetate 104
IES 456
Oranger crystals 74

A bit narcissus, a bit magnolia, very heady and I'm sure in a week or so this could be pretty damn strong. Also you can leave out the IES but it is carrying the formula quite well. This could easily be a small part of an actual formula, maybe hidden underneath an orangeflower or LOTV accord

Here is Devil's Son in Law's "Another 13" interpretation. Nice and simple to play around with. And to experiment with.

Hedione® (Firmenich).............300......Floral......33.37%
Benzyl acetate..........................50......Floral......5.56%
Amyl Salicylate.........................30......Floral......3.34%
Jasmine ABS, India EB............15......Floral......1.67%
Linalool.....................................50......Pear......5.56%
Hexyl Acetate (IFF)....................7......Pear......0.78%
Aldehyde C-14 PEACH.............5......Pear......0.56%
ISO E Super® (IFF)................150......Wood......16.69%
Oakmoss Absolute 10%.............7......Wood......0.78%
Galaxolide (IFF) @ 100%.......200......Musk......22.25%
Ambrettolide (IFF)....................50......Musk......5.56%
Ambrette Seed CO2 EB............5......Musk......0.56%
Ambroxan (KAO) @ 40%.........30......Aquatic......3.34%

Notes -
(1) replace the real oakmoss with Evernyl (Veramoss IFF) and double the dose.
(2) double the Ambroxan, or use the same dose and use Ambroxan flakes at 100% instead of the diluted 40%.
(3) reduce the Hedione to ratio 200 to match Galaxolide.
