Hello fellow vintage fragrance lovers!

As some of you may have observed in the Vintage SOTD thread, I have not long ago come into possession of a bottle of what I believe to be a true unicorn of the fragrance world... Romeo Y Julieta by Parfums Romeo Y Julieta. There is another fragrance that bears the same name that was put out under license of Suchel Camacho that I believe is unrelated to this fragrance, as through testing I've discovered that they are not alike in any way and because the packaging and bottle of this fragrance (along with a tobacco note clear to me) leads me to guess that perhaps this fragrance was a limited release that was spearheaded by the cigar manufacturer Romeo Y Julieta. However, I just don't know. I've been unsuccessful in finding any credible information regarding this fragrance.

I'm proposing to you aficionados, an opportunity to smell this rarely found fragrance. Also, as there's no solid information available (yet), a chance for you to capture your thoughts on this fragrance for Basenotes to use for information purposes in the directory. And, last but not least, I'm hoping it is something fun that we can all enjoy doing.

Here's what I'm thinking:
  • Before laying out how I think we should do it, I'd like to state from the onset that I believe this is a great fragrance. I've already mentioned tobacco note, so you know that note is in there. However, don't be fooled by any hyperbole regarding this fragrance... This is not something that you should spend a fortune on if you find it. There are other fragrances that will give you more joy, and even better tobacco forward fragrances. I'm never selling what I have, because for me it's damn good and wearable. We've seen things get hyped before and prices rise when they don't need to, and that's not the point of this thread. Everyone that knows me also knows that I'm not a seller, and only just this year made my first For Sale thread. I have had a love affair with fragrance since I was 8 years old, but my living is made in the petrochemical industry.

The Decent Proposal:
  • Identify all who would like to participate in the sample pass. ANYONE who would like to participate will be welcome, as long as we can ship to them. I live in the USA. So for anyone international, we will just have to figure out how to make it work as I don't know rules and regulations for international shipping. But we can discuss it here in the thread.
  • I make at least 2 samples, depending on participant locations, to be sent off to different locations of the globe to hopefully expedite moving the fragrance to participants.
  • Samples spend no more than a week maximum with a participant before being sent off to the next participant.
  • Each participant shall capture their thoughts regarding the fragrance on this thread. I will save my thoughts on the fragrance until everyone has had a chance with it, as I've spent some time with it and already have an opinion.
  • BN Leadership, should they choose to, can use information discovered in this thread to add to directory information.
  • I will begin the sample pass by shipping samples no later than this coming Monday February 6th, to allow some time for folks to get in on the pass. I will pay for all of the samples initial shipping, excluding any appreciable international shipping costs. We can discuss further and cross that bridge as we get to it. All participants must be able to pay for shipping to the next destination (tracked in this thread).
If you would like to be a part of the pass, please respond to this thread!

Warm regards,
Roman aka Diddy

Would you like to make it a comparison? I could thrown in similarly-packaged Cigar, Cigar Commander, and Cigarillo from Remy Latour, and King Cigar.

We can do that. It will be interesting to see everyone’s take. I can add Remy Latour Black Woods as well.

That looks very interesting.
You can certainly get in on it as well! Your nose has experienced much and we would value your thoughts as well. I don’t recall if you’ve participated in other passes or not, but we can find a way to get you samples and still protect your privacy. If interested, feel free to PM me.

I did a test run of it earlier on one arm:

In the opening, I got a fresh lemon and citrus notes. In the mid I got tobacco and black peppers, In the base I got sandalwood. A spicy woody aromatic scent. Quite nice overall.

I'm curious if others will pick out similar or different notes from the fragrance.

Bavard and PStoller have shown some interest. I’ll be making up a couple small decants to ship out. More if needed. Any vintage lovers that want to sample this are welcome in the pass. I gave it a hard deadline of shipping out samples no later than Monday 2/6/23 but I can ship out much sooner.

Just bumping this to see if anyone else was interested. I’ve got @Bavard and @PStoller done for samples. I will be making those samples this weekend and sending them out first thing Monday 2/6. If anyone else would like to try this fragrance, let me know and we will work it out, or coordinate with the guys on what’s sent out about having the sample continue moving. Thanks!

I am trying Romeo y Julieta edt today. The start was promising. It's a nice, wearable, masculine-smelling perfume. Fairly mainstream and dressy.

I'll see if the development has surprises. So far it's giving me the impression of something competently done playing it safe.

I guess Davidoff is fairly similar to this. Davidoff has a thicker soap note that can almost be too much. This is like a restrained version of Davidoff.

As I'm wearing this a little more, it's definitely reminding me a lot of Davidoff and Vermeil for Men. A good version.

I didn't keep my bottle of Vermeil for Men. I still have Davidoff, but my wife is scared of it. I think I can pull off Romeo y Julieta as a toned-down Davidoff. There's a little extra sweetness in Romeo y Julieta, and it is wearing far more quietly than Davidoff. I think this is well done and would have broad appeal. Thumbs up! This has a hint of smoke. It has the tobacco and the smoke. Pretty cool.

The packaging, as shown in the original post, is outstanding. Smoke your decants if you got 'em. I'm not really going to smoke both decants right away. I'm happy to pass one on if someone else wants to try it!

Looks like my package will arrive Monday. i don’t think we ever formalized whether I would send out supplementary “smokes,” but it’s still on the table if anyone on the RyJ list wants.

I’m a little surprised @Cook.bot didn't jump in on the action. I’m always keen for my favorite chef’s thoughts on a fragrance!

Honestly, I'd somehow overlooked the post until this callout. Do you think I should jump aboard? I do like a good tobacco.
