My alba rose smells like rich pink geranium/rose+cold black tea.
My observations: the substativity is much lower than the Bulgarian and Turkish roses. I like all roses)
My impression is that the distilled oil of Rosa alba smells softer and rounder than the regular Bulgarian Damascena oils, which often have a heavy, wine-like and almost bready character. Alba oil is more comparable to oils from Morocco and Turkey. I have the Bulgarian oils from R. alba and R. damascena compared on the scent strip and found no significant differences in longevity. However, the low content of farnesol in R. alba is noticeable in the base note. Since I really like this farnesol note in rose oils, this is a slight disadvantage of Alba oil for me.

I have some varieties of roses growing in my dacha, including white. I find its smell more fruity and sweet than the pink and red varieties. However, in comparison with oil, the smells are not similar, but it will come in handy for reconstruction. They also sent me Chinese rose oil (Rosa cymose), I had never tried it before. It smells quite noticeably of geraniol, more "green" with metallic undertone Снимок экрана 2023-05-07 в 16.05.56.png

Very interesting! I've never heard of Rosa cymosa, which seems to be a climbing species native to China, flowering in polyanthous, fragrant inflorescences.

Is your Rose Blanche base like a fantasy rose base or more akin to the real Rose Alba? I forgot to ask this awhile back.

I’m still in love with it 💚
It’s a gorgeous rose whatever the intent.

It is a classical rose base that reflects the scent of the flower using classic materials (including a LOT of rose absolute). It is not a base like Rose Givco for example which replicates with scientific accuracy a GCMS of the absolute and it's not a fantasy base like Clematis which has no relation to the plant at all. The classical roses are:

Rose Imperiale - Rose de Mai absolute replacer (the "captive" version of Wardia basically)
Rose D'Orient - Rose otto with honeyed notes
Rose Blanche - White Rose blossoms (my favourite)

The other roses are modern ones - Rose Essence being a rose otto with modern materials, and Rose St Columba being a study on a colonial rose I smelled in an old Church yard in Auckland.

The best sellers are Imperiale and Blache.

If you want to replicate the absolute of white Rose you could do that by adding some eugenol or clovebud to Rose Blanche - when smelling the rose you don't get the strong clove note you get from the absolute. I'm not really sure why the eugenol is so dominant in the extracted oil but not the true blossom.

Thanks Jamie. I appreciate that explanation. Very helpful 😊

Interesting - I wonder if it has a connection to Bourbon Rose - that is, to my nose, the greenest of the roses.

I don't know what kind of rose it is, but my FIL has a rose bush in his garden whose roses are pink & smell like an entire clove.

Interesting! I wonder what rose it is. White is the only one I've seen with a really high eugenol count in the absolute - perhaps the pink is a cross breed.
