That Coconut Bay aftershave and shave soap set is tempting me. I know nothing of the brand really other than what I’ve read here. Let me ask: for hot humid weather, in my southern US summer, which ones would you recommend I look at strongly? I’m thinking ahead.

PAA has samples you can buy and I always recommend buying samples because nobody can predict what they will like or not like just from reading notes. You might get a ballpark idea that it's something you would like though. And my descriptions only can give slightly more insight.

For the Summer? When Summer comes, PAA likely will release "Garden of Bali" and I highly recommend that one. I call it the "Asian 4711 / Colonia". Like 4711 is to Europe and Colonia is to Italy, I think Garden of Bali is an Asian Summer freshie worth wearing. I love the stuff. Garden of Bali's main notes that grab your attention first are the white florals and citrus, but the anchor notes that provide the depth and obvious Asian vibe are the Cedar & Bamboo. The complete composition is worthy of being a major counter mainstay for fragrance enthusiasts. I can't for the life of me understand how such a stellar fragrance is relegated to a "seasonal" release schedule. It should be year round and stay on their roster permanently. I think you will enjoy it.

I own the Coconut Oud aftershave/cologne and that is strong enough to say it's "EDT" strength. A good 4-6 hours and then a few hours of a decent skin scent. It smells like it sounds. Coconut and Oud. I like it.

Two samples from a recent order that have piqued my interest:

Phoenix Lights: I’m wondering if someone can help me place this one, because the ad copy and my nose just aren’t lining up.

Here are the official notes: Citrus, Grapefruit, Jasmin, Woody, Amber, Musk, Tobacco, Oakmoss.

PAA calls it: Warm, calming, musky, masculine, and memorable like an Arizona afternoon down on the ranch! This is probably exactly what John Wayne's Neckerchief smelled like!

What I smell is shades of Gucci Pour Homme II (not what I would call a John Wayne scent). Has anyone tried this one?

Chocolate Bourbon: My wife’s favorite of the dozen or so samples I presented to her. She loves gourmands on me, and I must say, it is a delectable fragrance.

I agree that Phoenix Lights is lighter, not heavy at all and to me it smells like ADP Colonia with some very light tobacco accented in there somewhere and a very faint hint of ginger.

I'm eventually going to buy Chocolate Bourbon. I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Likely this Winter.

Hey all,

While they are still on the site to try for this Summer season you have the chance to still try these (and I recommend them all to try out because they are all good quality). These are "Seasonal" so you don't have much time to try them out and buy them before they are pulled off the shelf until next year. Some might not see but rare limited releases that last only a short time.

Phoenix Lights - This one is a very limited release so order it ASAP if you want a chance to get the sample in time to place an order if you like it. I don't think the product description really does this justice because it's not heavy or overt. It's laid back, and like a citrus, and it's hard to describe. I think it smells like a cross between ADP Colonia & a light tobacco with a touch of ginger, but it seems to smell different to different people. I am really liking this one and at first I mistakenly thought it doesn't last or has poor performance, but, that's not the case. This scent seems to be sillage-based and lingers "in the air". When smelled directly it isn't very strong, but after I think the scent is "gone" I walk outside and catch a back drift of air and smell it and it's very apparent, not weak at all. So, really watch out and don't over apply this stuff because it's sneaky in that it doesn't seem to be projecting, but it does "on the air" very well even when you can't detect it very well hours later.

Miami Libre - This scent is attempting to bring the scent of the Miami/Cuban nightlife to a scent. I have a sample and I'm still mulling it over. I think it's worth ordering and trying it out. It's main description is of a mojito cocktail & cigar (but I am getting an obvious ripe-pineapple note in there too).
Scent Profile: Organic Lime, Coumarin, Benzoin Resin, Madagascar Vanilla, Tobacco, White Sage, Mint, Pineapple & Rum

11235 - An "homage" to 4711. I recommend the EDP in order to increase the longevity.

Garden of Bali - A white floral, cedar & bamboo scent. I call this the "Asian 4711". It's a wonderful scent IMO.

Immortal Peach

La Tierra Mojada - A metallic/tart petrichor scent. This smells like a rainy-industrial-site type of scent. (I love this one, it's unique.)

Lavender Planet - A 6 lavender medley that is smooth, very pleasing and not piercing like other lavender scents I've smelled. I recommend the EDP + Deodorant of this one to increase longevity. Lasts about 4-5 hours, so the deodorant helps keep some residual personal scent.

Old Salty - While it's not one I care for, it's got a few fans so far on Basenotes (Mythrol and Diddy)

Son of Honeysuckle - Love this one. Simple Honeysuckle flower and very realistic and beautiful.

Vetiver Planet - Several kinds of vetiver. Each batch is hand-made and each release I've bought has a very different character because these natural plants can shift their scent based on season, source, maceration time and other variables. This current batch is deep, earthy, slightly smokey, nutty and smoother than past batches. There are real vetiver grass roots inside the bottle.

I guess there is another re-release of one called Rabid Banana. I don't know what it smells like but I have a hunch it's banana.

I think it only fair to say that I still haven't purchased anything from PPA. Even though Old Salty was a nice soapy clean fragrance, it didn't strike me well enough to purchase. I'm still working through the samples and hoping to find something that moves me. I haven't had anything strike me as being bad but just waiting to be moved. I'll update the thread as soon as something clicks, which I'm hoping to be the case.

What samples do you currently have and what kinds of fragrances do you like? I haven’t tried everything from PAA, but I have 66 samples and counting! I’d be happy to try and steer you toward something you might like.

Hey, TYSVM! I appreciate the offer. I think my issue is that I have so many fragrances I’m at a point something has to really strike me or move me the right way. And that hasn’t happened with PAA for me, yet. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the house. Just waiting for that Ah-ha moment

If you put a gun to my head and told me to pick 5 fragrances as a top 5 from my collection at this moment, I’d say: Millesime Imperial, CC 1872 , Serge Lutens Santal de Mysore, Jubilation XXV, and Mugler Ultra Zest. And as I listed those I was literally looking at a 2009 bottle of DHI, a 2015 bottle of Royal Mayfair, Dia Man, Apple Brandy, vintage GIT, Nio, vintage Egoiste, Tuscan Leatger, Aubepine Acacia, Sahara Noir, et etc etc that easily fall into one of those slots. I have a very eclectic collection but would say that over the years my most worn fragrances lean clean and/or fresh and it can be classic clean/fresh of modern. And at the moment, something that can survive extreme heat and humidity.

I have these samples: The Beach, Gold Label (which is a really good Royal Mayfair clone btw but not quite as good as my 2015 bottle of the real deal), Tombstone, Tribute, Diver Down, Aqua D/G, Atomic Bay Rum, Copalli, Coconut Oud, Boomtown Bay Rum, Old salty, Atmotic, Coconut Bay, Classico Bay Rum, and Pineapple Bay Rum. Smell wise, I most liked from those: Gold Label, Tribute, Atmotic, Old Salty, and Coconut Bay. Tombstone may have actually been the most interesting and moving. Jury is still out on it as my thoughts on it change each time I wear it. But none of those moved me to ‘buy it now’. Garden of Bali and Vetiver Planet are two that interest me and I’ll just need to get them with some other samples. Maybe one of the others from the doppelgänger line is worth me trying?

Probably PAA's best fragrance is Sangre de Drago. A heavy resin-based medley that is dominated mostly by Dragon's Blood resin with Oud & Sandalwood. It's not suited for the hot portions of Summer though.

I also recommend trying Solstice, a grassy, chalky, pepperminty scent with some ceremonial Sage that adds to the green and there is a sweetness to the scent that is not overdone. I also detect desert plants like tumbleweed, shrubs that I smell on the Southwestern U.S. air in Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada.

One of the newer ones, Phoenix Lights is pretty good and worth checking out.

There are so many others to try. Some seasonal ones like Clown Fruit and Ciderhouse 5. I think Ciderhouse 5 is a really good dark horse candidate you might pick. It smells like a Cider drink + Cherry Tobacco, a trace of Smoke and a hint of Wood. It's like you're sitting by a fire in a rocking chair sipping a cider drink and smoking a cherry tobacco pipe.

Eclectic indeed! Looks like you have a handle on PAA’s bay rums. It’s not my favorite style, but I do own a bottle of Coconut Bay - love the lime opening! I think @tspencer and I have different taste, so between us you can hopefully separate some of the wheat from the chaff. Of those he recommended, I was disappointed by Sangre de Drago, at least in the aftershave/cologne concentration. I would second Phoenix Lights, however. Perhaps start there.

From your samples, I’ve tried everything except Old Salty and Aqua D/G. The only other full bottle I sprang for from those was Gold Label, but I keep revisiting Atmotic, Copali, and Coconut Oud. They’ve all grown on me.

I find that, in general, a lot of PAA fragrances lean toward a sort of classic clean “dad’s aftershave” style; though they don’t smell the same, the effect is similar (e.g. Red Planet, Atmotic, and Hotel Cecil all give me similar vibes). For me, the “ah-ha” gems tend to fall outside this aesthetic.

Here are a few brief thoughts on some to consider:
  • Al Fin is sharp, clean, and talcy. Some may find the association with baby powder off putting, but I think it’s a step above. I own a full bottle.
  • Agharta is a straightforward vanilla in the vein of Lalique Le Parfum, but less smoky-boozy (I prefer it to the Lalique). Vanilla isn’t my favorite note in high concentrations, but here it works for me. I own a full bottle.
  • Vetiver Planet brings to mind Guerlain’s Vetiver. The opening is a bit sharp and medicinal, but the drydown is more earthy and smooth. It’s a good performer. I own a full bottle.
  • I’ve not smelled YSL Rive Gauche, but CaD is a gentlemanly fragrance supposedly inspired by RG. If you’re looking for that style, I find Dua’s River Fougere more refined, but I’d consider CaD for everyday use.
  • Chocolate Bourbon is a fun gourmand that’s surprisingly wearable. I’m not big on boozy fragrances, but would consider buying a full bottle.
  • I’ve not tried the other Doppelgängers, but the re-released Oxblood would be on my list to try if I didn’t already own Sartorial.
  • Tokyo Rose would be a great one to try for someone just getting into rose-forward masculines. It would be redundant in my collection, but is worth a try.
  • I see your SOTD is Castile…perhaps give Enigma Machine, Meta Nectar, or perhaps Garden of Bali a try for a similar wear. I don’t care for this style myself; perhaps others can chime in.

For fragrances that will surely elicit a reaction, I’d suggest trying some of the seasonal offerings.
  • This fall, perhaps try Clown Fruit or Blue Samhain. The latter’s burnt sugar note isn’t for me, but Clown Fruit is unique and very wearable. Both perform very well. Ciderhouse 5 is nice, but not in my top 10.
  • The winter seasonals you could probably skip. It was fun to try fruitcake, cookie, and egg nog-inspired fragrances, but I didn’t care for them. Magi and Kiritimati were likewise duds for me. I want to love Lump of Coal, but something about it turns my stomach.
  • The spring and summer releases I’m not as familiar with, but banana and fireworks sound fun! Terra Preta smells just like potting soil.

As much positive as there is to say, there are a few things from PAA I personally find underwhelming.
  • I think the house’s work with sandalwood and tobacco fall a bit flat, so I wouldn’t personally recommend the likes of Supreme Sandalwood Science or Cavendish. Rustler’s Ridge is unfortunately discontinued. Gondolier is a worse version of D&G Pour Homme.
  • Some of the lighter, summer-oriented offerings also feel a bit thin or unfinished to me. Future Fiction, Lime Ginger Tea Tree, and The Beach, for instance, are all fine but hardly memorable. I do plan to revisit Fresco - it reminds me a bit of a greener, less citrus-forward Eau de Sud. Not a great performer, though. High Jump 47 has a great “Italian barbershop” opening, but the base is all Jovan’s White Musk for Men. Perhaps some of these need to be tried in the edp concentration, but $50 for 30ml is a bit steep.
  • In several fragrances, I get hints of strange “leaf and stem” notes - sort of a rough greenness sitting below the surface that doesn’t feel refined. Not a grassy or minty greenness, either…just pungent crushed plants. It’s not in-your-face, but I notice it here and there. Perhaps it’s PAA’s distillation techniques. Mega Flora doubles down on this, which makes it more recognizable in a few others. I liked how it was used it in the discontinued Holliday.
That’s a lot more than I anticipated saying, but PAA’s lineup is overwhelming. If you have specific questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Fresco is a resurrection of the 1990's discontined Old Spice Fresh.

Also, PAA works a lot with natural fragrance components, so there may be less precise notes and some side-tannins like you find in very old fragrances from the 1970's and earlier. Although PAA's lab does have some synthetics (because no modern fragrance lab doesn't have them), they seem to be fond of natural tones in their fragrances.

Someone on Basenotes, possibly Cologne Cabinet, loves Cavendish. I love Copali, which is more resinous and cold with its tobacco, like a cold pipe that hasn't been lit in a month but has left over tobacco resin. In that way Copali is like no other fragrance I've ever smelled. Cavendish is more fresh, pre-smoked tobacco with some well tuned sweetness.

Hey all,

Although it's not on their website yet, coming in the near future PAA is doing a resurrection of Tom Ford's Plum Japonais and putting it in their "Doppelganger" line and it looks like it's going to be called "Doppelganger Plum". I caught early news of this on the Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements Private Facebook Shaving Group. PAA has nailed some of their Doppelganger scents like Doppelganger Gold, which is a rather spot-on replica of Creed Royal Mayfair. I'm hoping they do as great of a job on their attempt of bringing back Plum Japonais as they did on scents like Royal Mayfair and Old Spice Fresh and their take on Brut. Those were all fantastic takes and their fragrance "Et Tu", IMO, surpasses the modern/cheap Brut you find at supermarkets. I already own the Alexandria Fragrances "Forbidden Plum", which is more than decent, except the opening of it is synthetic and not quite the same, but the dry down matches Plum Japonais for the most part. I'm excited to find out how close PAA gets. I still have a Plum Japonais sample I got 4 or 5 years ago that I can use to compare the PAA version to when it eventually comes out.

Hey all,

PAA dropped a few new "oddities". I've never tried them, but like so many risky adventures that PAA does, maybe somebody here wants to try out something out of the ordinary/niche?

Aloha Smackdown (apparently smells like Hawaiian Punch)

Space of July (and this one is supposed to smell like a BBQ with smoke and spices)

Tea Party 508
Top Notes: Green Tea, White Tea, Lemon, Bergamot, Salt Water
Middle Notes: Spicey, Sweet, Floral, Earl Grey
Base Notes: Black Tea, Vanilla, Musk, Amber, Tobacco

Like so many of their scents, you will likely only see these for 1-3 months and when they are gone there is no guarantee you will get another chance to buy them unless they sell well.
