Geo F. Trumper---Free samples,  class act.

Got my samples yesterday.

Here's  a very brief review:

1. GTF---Pass.  You may like it if you're very addicted to citrus frgs, though.

2. West Indian Lime--Pass.  Over the top.

3. Milk of Flowers---Decided to pass.  The clove note makes it  a kind of
Jacomo Lite for Summer.  Good drydown but a bit too weird.

4. Eucris.---WOW!  I had my feet on the coffee table watching TV late at night and got an uncontrolable urge to wear a tuxedo and head to the Baccarat table at the nearest casino.   Walther PPK optional---Get it!.   Pure elegance.

5.  Curzon---Anyone know what's in this?   Splendid eveningwear.  Get it.

6. Spanish Leather---Not enough oo's in smooth for this one.  It plays around with
leather and musk.  Subdued  enough for officewear, strong enough for romantic encounters---Get it!

7. Sandalwood---Yes,  it's good but I prefer MpG's Santal Noble.

My first purchases will be Eucris and Spanish Leather.

If you've tried these and  have also been as  impressed as I was,  what else would you recommend?

My thanks to the Trumper co.

Re: Geo F. Trumper---Free samples,  class act.

I was turned on to Eucris here on BN recently, and when the bottle arrived, I was instantly in love. I cannot think of a more immediately perfect masculine scent that I have ever tried, sans perhaps Tuscany, which also was immediately excellent. Eucris is a true power scent, but has the perfect complex blend, and level of intensity, so as to not be too much, yet just right at all times. And it lasts all day too. I love this stuff. I just ordered my second bottle to have on hand, cause I know this is a keeper and will be worn often. Eucris embodies exactly what I have looked for in a male scent....class, strength, sophistication, power, etc. And I love the James Bond connection. It, to me, is what Yatagan should be, if Yatagan dropped the Celery/Eucalyptus thing, the rest of the scent would be wonderful and wearable in the real world. Eucris is instantly just as masculine and strong as Yatagan, without any strange notes. Just pure sophistication and strength.

Now I need to try Spanish Leather!

Of the ones that haven't been mentioned above, I really like Trumper's Eau de Quinine. It has a bittersweet opening, followed by a sweetish drydown. Eau de Quinine has a very traditional, old-school feel to it (the formula is originally from the 19th century), so it would probably appeal to afficiandos of English barbershop-style scents. Not a "modern" style of fragrance, but delightfully quirky.

I've also read a lot of positive comments on Ajaccio Violets on Basenotes and men's wet shaving internet sites. Alas, Trumper's didn't include this one when they sent me free samples. Many people seem really taken by the smell of Ajaccio Violets - it's often described as "unique" - although it has also been criticised for being quite short-lived.

I suspect with Trumper's that virtually all their frags are at least worth trying. Even if you don't like some of their scents, there's no denying their quality. None of the Trumper's fragrances I've tried smell "cheap".

Trumpers is very gererous with their samples, and most of their scents are wonderfully sophisticated.

Verve: The Ajaccio Violets is very nice, not overly sweet, but not long lasting. Not one I'd purchase.

RonF: I share your feelings about Eucris, but as with all Trumper colognes, I'm having a tough time locating it. From whom are are you ordering? Thanks.

Re: Geo F. Trumper---Free samples,  class act.

Ajacco Violets is a very refined, clean-smelling, fresh fragrance. Like all Trumper fragrance undniable high quality. Not too long-lasting, but at least worth a try.
Eucris is really wonderful, a perfect choice for evening wear. I also second Mario's comment on Spanish Leather: it's definitely a must-have!
Other great Trumper frags: Royal (smooth, luxurious), Marlborough (soapy), Astor (green), Sylvester and Skye (the best aquatic scent I know). All Trumper fragrances are extremeyl well handicrafted.
Trumper's colognes have a reasonable price and a very high quality standard - so each one is recommendable, although GFT, West Indian Lime and Milk of flowers are not as unique as the others. Curzon and Quinine are quite eccentric - you should sample them before you buy.

Too true, Gerald. I agree also with Rapscallion's comment about Trumper's fragrances being "wonderfully sophisticated".

I've only discovered Trumper's fragrances recently, after asking for, and kindly receiving, samples from them. But WHAT a discovery this has been!

I now own, and enjoy, bottles of GFT and Sandalwood.

I've tried 6 Trumper's fragrances. One thing that amazes me is how natural-smelling all their fragrances seem to be. I've been banging on for aeons on Basenotes about how much I dislike the overtly synthetic quality of many recently released designer fragrances. And yet with Trumper's, even quite recent releases such as GFT (2001) and Sandalwood (2002) manage to avoid those ghastly synthetic overtones that plague - and to me simply ruin - so many recently-released designer fragrances.

And don't forget, Trumper's is a very small player in the fragrance world. If they have the resources and wherewithal to produce such high-quality, natural-smelling fragrances, what excuse do larger companies have for inflicting extremely synthetic smelling atrocities such as Higher Energy, Allure, and Givenchy Pour Homme upon us? (Apologies here to anyone that enjoys these fragrances. I adore quite a few fragrances - both men's and women's- from Dior, Chanel and Givenchy. But not these recent releases).

Trumper's is an exceptional fragrance house IMHO. The quality of their fragrances is obvious to anyone who tries them. (They also produce men's shaving creams that are as good as any you'll find in the world - but that's by-the-by here). And what a relief it is to discover Trumper's after sampling so much recent designer house pap!

Re: Geo F. Trumper---Free samples,  class act.

Rapscallion:

I find numerous sites on the Internet to purchase Trumpers, in both the UK and the USA. Originally, I simply made an online purchase from Trumpers directly. It took about 2 weeks, but the package arrived no problem. You need to convert the currency in order to know how much you are paying, but it costs what it costs, and arrives none the less. Interestingly, the package appears to have come from a US distributer...so, even though I ordered from Trumpers UK, they apparantly passed it off to a US source for distribution.

My second purchase was from a site in the US...can't think of the name right now, but it was a simple Google to find several such sites, and I picked the one that looked the best. Price was about $72 shipped for a standard 100ml bottle of Eucris. Once it arrives in a few days, as long as all is well with it, I will post up the name of the site as a recommend.

Mario, I also liked Spanish Leather but my favorite of the samples I received was Astor. If you like SL and Eucris I'm sure you'll want this one also.

I've been a big proponent of Eucris for quite some time. I will second the recommendation of the Gentlemen's Shop as a reputable "stocker", as the British would say. Top class service all the way.

Re: Geo F. Trumper---Free samples,  class act.

Thanks for the suggestions!

In fairness I should add that you should first sample Spanish Leather, as some of you will not find it  "complex " enough.  Somewhat akin to my preference for Santal Noble over the Trumper Sandalwood.   But yes, I am odering this 'simple' fragrance.  If you know of other great leather scents,  please post.

Mind you,  I pray no one suggests 'Bandit' ,  but to each his own---

On the other hand,  Curzon,   like Eucris,   is both elegant and complex--and I still haven't a clue as to what's in it.   I like Eucris better but I'm  still curious.   Does anyone know the notes?

Now I've got to try  Quinine, Astor and Skye  :)

Re: Geo F. Trumper---Free samples,  class act.

Basenoters to the rescue again! Thanks for posting the links where Trumper colognes are available. U.S sources are so hard to locate.
I've gone through about a dozen samples and have enjoyed them all. Trumpers is quite an amazing house. Everything is so refined. I own their Sandalwood cologne, which ranks as one of my favorite colognes and is reserved for very special occasions. There are a couple of other scents I'm after -Eucris is one of them.
Others that I'd like [smiley=wink.gif] in a perfect world
GFT
Wellington
Wild Fern
Royal
etc, etc, etc...

Now I've got to try Quinine, Astor and Skye :)

I found Skye very feminine/floral. (don't know if that would bother you or not, but it's the antithesis of Eucris in that regard) Actually it's great frag, but, in my opinion, on a woman. Smells EXACTLY like a certain flower - I'm not sure which, but it's a very familiar scent.

Quinine I haven't tried, but I heard it starts out with a bitter note?

I also sampled Wellington. It was okay, but not as appealing as Astor/SL/Eucris IMO.

How do you get samples of some of these? I don't see anything on the web page.

Radames

I got my free samples by sending Trumper's an email through their website and asking for some. Their website is:

http://www.trumpers.com/

They sent me 6 samples, which arrived within about 3-4 days.

BTW, if you enjoy wet shaving, Trumper's also make world class shaving creams.

Ok, well, last week in a thread someone recommended Musc Ravageur and mentioned that if they were feeling generous e-mailing them might net a free sample. So, I did e-mail them. Then, last night, I was reading in a sandalwood thread about Art of Shavings Sandalwood EDT and how they also might be kind enough to send samples with an e-mail. Well, I realized at that point that I hadn't checked the mail for the day and I went outside, and what was on my porch, but a glorious little box with French on it and the words "Cosmetic Product". Yup, I received a little 5ml sample spray bottle of Musc Ravageur, which I must say, kicks butt!

Well, anyway, what I was wanting to ask, is are there any other great scents out there, the kind I wouldn't find at Dillards, that have manufacturers who often send out free samples if inquiries are made...because they are either generous or have great business sense...or both? Of course, I could just go to town and e-mail every cologne maker under the sun, but I was wondering if you guys knew of any others with a preponderance for this behavior. Funds are a bit constrained at this moment, and even when I get paid in a little over a week, I really plan on restricting myself to a few decants, and at most, a bottle of something I really like. But, I'm in that unabashed "crack fiend" gotta try new stuff phase, so well, hey, I just want the scent train to keep on rolling. And any free is good given the ever expanding financial commitment of this hobby. So basically, it would be great if you'd list any others you know, and right now, I'm willing to give any scent a whirl.
