interesting that his first move is a re-release (& tinkering) of a number of fragrances created under & with involvement of a previous creative director

Hedi would be proud although maybe somewhat baffled

I have the current BdA & like it - curious to try this “new” version

The title of the thread is "New Maison Christian Dior Fragrance for 2022" and all the last I see is comments regarding reformulations of fragrances over 15 years old (2004) previously reformulated. And apparently now Eau Noire comes without colorants.
Pretty boring.

I feel like he would be proud more than baffled. He was the one to even start the whole exclusive line at Dior with those very 3 fragrances back in 2004, after all. It is one of his legacies he gifted the brand.

Personally, it became more bland and more sweet than Annick's original formulation for Hedi Slimane. I'm definitely curious to sniff Francis' version, but I already have enough of Annick's version for last my lifetime.
The original, Bois d’Argent Cologne (2004) was by Annick Menardo, it was later tinkered with by Demachy and released as an EDP. The same with Eau Noire and Ambre Nuit while axing Cologne Blanche completely.

Perhaps "perfect" was an exaggeration, but I found the reformulated Bois d'Argent good, and not in need of a major re-edition. I admit, I'm also wary of FK's style. With the exception of APLS, it tends to lean too clean for me.

Never understood why people worry about the color of the liquid.
The only time I think it's important would be if it could stain clothing. Other than that, I assume it's a visual/aesthetic preference - just as we eat with our eyes, I assume many people are still predisposed to interpret certain colours and their intensity as good/bad. One other point, some fragrances look different in certain lighting: when I owned Gucci Pour Homme, the liquid was predominantly green when I had it in one room. I assumed it had gone off, but in different lighting, it looked the normal brown.

What are the odds that some of the discontinued MFK fragrances end up in some form as a Dior fragrance?

Why is Eau Noire yellow? 🧐

EDIT:
Looks like it's actually happening:

I love this. It might be the traditionalist in me, but I think fragrances should be varying degrees of amber in color, unless the actual perfume ingredients changes the color.

Back in the day, I still remember reading that there was a narrative online that explained the green colour of Eau Noire is due to the naturals in it.

I’m feeling mixed about the news of BdA reformulation. I’m hoping it turns out well. I hear good things about the OG formula, so I hope I like it as much as I like the current version.

I'm skeptical if Francis' Boi d'Argent formula will be similar to Annick's formula. Part of the reason why Francois claims to be the creator of all these fragrances made before his time was because Dior brought in Francois, around 2011, to take production of their fragrances in-house. This means they severed their ties with the big oil houses that Francis, and Annick worked for at the time. The big oil houses are the ones who own the right to produce the original formulas, and Francois had to re-create them so that Dior can reproduce them without needing the middleman. I'm not sure if Francis has access to Annick's original formula, so I am skeptical if this is him bringing back the original formula of Bois d'Argent back.

He should let Annick re-do Bois d'Argent & he do the other 2 as close to the originals as possible.
That would be amazing!

Remastering makes sense.
I came up with that term thinking that maybe this is a new tendency in the perfume industry to remaster old formulas, e.g., Kenzo Homme EDT 2022, YSL Bleu Electrique, AdG EDP 2022 and DHS 2021. Although I can argue either way, it seems that such a strategy even safer than issuing flankers.

I haven't done a side-by-side comparison between Francis' formula and Francois' formula. What differences do you detect?
I've been dreading smelling my bottle of the original Eau Noire, just because I was first exposed to Francois' formula and I liked it enough. I was scared that if I tried the original, I would start finding the flaws in Francois' version, and I was right.

Dacob pretty much nails it:

Francis' version for Hedi Slimane smells significantly different than Francois' reformulation. The original is much smoother, more refined, and less aggressive pop in the top notes. Francois' version has a top note that is more pronounced, and has this astringent quality to it, which overall gives it a fresher feeling. The original quickly moves from the fresh lavender opening to the sweet hay, smokey, woody drydown. The freshness is sustained longer in Francois' version.

I understand why Dacob describes the original as feeling "wet" or humid. I get that same feeling as well. Francois' version is drier. I also feel like there is more nuance, depth, and complexity in the original version. It feels like something real, almost like a magical potion or elixir instead of a perfume. It smells so good that I let out a sigh of pleasure when I smell it. Francois' formula is more aggressive, shrill, loud, but flat. It doesn't seem to have the complexity that the original has. I suspect Francois' version is tailored for those who care about performance and longevity because it outperforms the original, and I find that the opening can be annoying. I don't find the original annoying at all. I 100% understand why Francis decided that one of the first things he would do is to fix what Francois did to his Eau Noire. Ignorance is bliss, and now I look at Francois' version with a bit of disdain.

I'm so interested in Eau Noire, and it's been one of the few fragrances I've wanted to get my nose on I haven't been able to. I'll get one of those 250ml bottles in September.

"I don't like the direction this conversation is headed, so I wanted everyone having it to know that I am specifically unhappy with it so everyone will stop and change direction just for me"

That's how this sounds. You know how many threads here I see with conversations that don't interest me? A lot more than ones that actually do. Guess which ones I reply to and which ones I don't? 😉
