Now Smell This reports on the new Jo Malone limited edition Highlands collection from Jo Malone.

Jo Malone has launched the brand's annual Brit collection, with four fragrances: Highland Heather, Mallow On The Moor, Melancholy Thistle and Wild Achillea...

...Highland Heather ~ "Morning haze across the Highlands fades to reveal a wilderness blanketed by swathes of heather. An amethyst vision captured in a woody scent, enhanced with English lavender and freshened by cypress, grounded in sensual amber." [Update: "Marie [Salamagne] also uncovered a love for an iconic flower of Scotland: heather, which she used to create an elegant, enticing, fresh and wild fragrance – Highland Heather. ‘I was fascinated by how heather turns whole hillsides purple when in bloom, attracting bees that make the most prized honey,’ she remarks. ‘Heather offers aromatic, woody notes, as well as fresh florals, both of which were represented in our heather accord. To this we added cypress and vetiver for naturality and amber for sensuality. Towards the end of the development, we blended in English lavender to really emphasize that purple, aromatic appeal so beloved of the bees.’"]

Mallow On The Moor ~ "Purple mallow flowers spill across an untamed landscape, beckoning bees with their vivid color. These pretty petals flutter alongside powdery heliotrope in this soft floral scent enriched by the naturality of violet leaves." [Update: "Mallow On The Moor is a soft, powdery and charming scent that takes its cue from purple mallow flowers. ‘I presented a mallow accord to Céline that she was really keen on from the start, so after that it was just a question of trying to create the right balance of softness, sweetness and powderiness in the fragrance,’ Yann [Vasnier] recalls. ‘To retain a sense of petaly freshness in the top, we used violet leaves to keep things green and fresh. In the heart, we worked around orris and heliotrope for softness and, in the base, we blended exclusive roasted oak to represent the earthy, peaty textures of the moors.’"]

Melancholy Thistle ~ "Bold and bright Melancholy Thistles guard a long-abandoned castle in the Scottish Highlands. Entwined with a green freshness, this woody aromatic scent is underpinned by coolwood to summon the ivy-covered stone walls inside a majestic relic." [Update: "Anne Flipo describes the fragrance as ‘a celebration of the raw nature of the Highlands, where the elements run wild, and where ivy and honeysuckle grow in the cracks of castle walls. We combined a thistle accord with various natural elements to create that sense of wildness: creating a woody, green effect, with aqueous facets to capture the idea of wildflowers growing among wet stones. We harnessed Headspace technology to capture the natural scent of English ivy, which lends leafy green herbal notes, added natural patchouli for elegance and a special molecule called Coolwood to replicate the smell of moss on wet stone. Natural broom – a flower that grows in abundance in Scotland, with butter-yellow flowers that are favourites of the bees – added a honey-like touch.’"]

Wild Achillea ~ "Golden bundles of wild achillea frame remote ruins alive with nature. Sparkling with bright bergamot entwined with the tangy sting of nettle, the greenness balanced on a base of soft white musk." Probably a reissue of 2019's Nettle & Wild Achillea; additional notes include vetiver. [Update: Yes, it is a reissue.]

Jo Malone Highland Heather, Mallow On The Moor, Melancholy Thistle and Wild Achillea are available now at Bergdorf Goodman, in 30 ml, $82 each.

Update: the name is just "The Highlands". Additional descriptions in brackets above are via jomalone.ca. The brand's description of the collection:

The untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands inspires a new limited-edition collection comprised of four scents, exploring vivid landscapes of rugged highlands, misty moors, crumbling castles and mysterious lochs. ‘Often, when we think of the British countryside, we think of something that’s a bit more orderly, a bit more groomed,’ says Céline [Roux]. ‘But with the Scottish Highlands, nature runs wild in such a dramatic way. We really wanted to embrace this with this collection. The idea that however much you may try to control nature, when left to its own devices it just takes over.’

Nice names, I like the branding as well. I wonder if any are similar to Chanel's Paris Edinburgh?

Jo Malone always does such good design & packaging for their summer limited edition releases. I wish they excited me more, but some of them in the past have been so boring.

I'm hopeful there will be something in this line-up that will grab me. It seems as if the lavender might be very 'raw' smelling and 'wild' and if it smells like it is, I'll enjoy that one. However my interpretation of 'wild' is (I am certain) much different from what Jo Malone, and their focus-groups, feel are 'wild'.

Thank you, Mike. I must try these. I slipped away from Jo Malone for a while so maybe I need to venture back in to give these a sniff.

Thank you, Mike, for the video! Last week, I purchased two scents from this collection: Mallow on the Moor and Melancholy Thistle. I saved them for a road trip to Napa Valley, which I am now on so my debut wearing will be tomorrow. My love of Jo Malone has recently been rekindled.

Yes, I love the experience of wearing a new fragrance for repeated days while traveling. It's like having a secret travel companion!
